THE APPLE TEMPERMENT

THE APPLE TEMPERMENT
Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Proverbs [GW] 3:3-7 Do not let mercy and truth leave you. Fasten them around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and much success in the sight of God and humanity. Trust the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths smooth. Do not consider yourself wise. Fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.
Romans 12:1-2 Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God's compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. Don't become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants-what is good, pleasing, and perfect.
2Timothy 2:15-16 Do your best to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker who isn't ashamed to teach the word of truth correctly. Avoid pointless discussions. People who pay attention to these pointless discussions will become more ungodly,
James 4:6b-8 Scripture says, "God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people." So place yourselves under God's authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners, and clear your minds, you doubters.
1Peter 5:6-10 Be humbled by God's power so that when the right time comes he will honor you. Turn all your anxiety over to God because he cares for you. Keep your mind clear, and be alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion as he looks for someone to devour. Be firm in the faith and resist him, knowing that other believers throughout the world are going through the same kind of suffering. God, who shows you his kindness and who has called you through Christ Jesus to his eternal glory, will restore you, strengthen you, make you strong, and support you as you suffer for a little while.

In 20 years as a volunteer with Good News Jail & Prison Ministry and 53+ years teaching in the outside world I’ve frequently highlighted 2Timothy 2:15-16: The importance of personal study and ponderance of God’s Word.
To emphasize Scriptural paucity I often asked “What was the forbidden fruit in Genesis chapters 2 & 3?” . . . giving the Bible location in the hope that the unknowledgeable students would look the fact up. Though some do so, commonly they do not. Some answer correctly, but too often the response from inmate or outmate unknowledgeable or those claiming Bible knowledge was apple.
Claiming trust, reliance upon, the Word living and written for life knowledge and wisdom requires actual personal 2Timothy 2:15 study and Romans 12:2 thought unto appropriate reverence of God and one another. God’s Word is essential to knowing His will that is “good, pleasing, and perfect”.
Otherwise we don’t simple misidentify the fruit of first bite, we walk proudly by our own familial thought, incur God’s resistance, and stumble along vulnerable to the devourer.
From Adam Clarke’s COMMENTARY ON THE BIBLE he outlines Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart - This is a most important precept:
1.    God is the Fountain of all good.
2.    He has made his intelligent creatures dependent upon himself.
3.    He requires them to be conscious of that dependence.
4.    He has promised to communicate what they need.
5.    He commands them to believe his promise, and look for its fulfillment.
6.    And to do this without doubt, fear, or distrust; “with their whole heart.”
Lean not unto thine own understanding - אל תשען  al tishshaen, do not prop thyself. It is on God, not on thyself, that thou art commanded to depend. He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.

  Apple anyone?!

A MURDEROUS HISTORY

A MURDEROUS HISTORY
Monday, August 29, 2016

Proverbs [ESV] 6:16-19 There are six things that the LORD hates, even seven that are disgusting to him: arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill innocent people, a mind devising wicked plans, feet that are quick to do wrong, a dishonest witness spitting out lies, and a person who spreads conflict among relatives.
Jeremiah 17:7-10 Blessed is the person who trusts the LORD. The LORD will be his confidence. He will be like a tree that is planted by water. It will send its roots down to a stream. It will not be afraid in the heat of summer. Its leaves will turn green. It will not be anxious during droughts. It will not stop producing fruit. "The human mind is the most deceitful of all things. It is incurable. No one can understand how deceitful it is. I, the LORD, search minds and test hearts. I will reward each person for what he has done. I will reward him for the results of his actions.
James 4:1-10 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Aren't they caused by the selfish desires that fight to control you? You want what you don't have, so you commit murder. You're determined to have things, but you can't get what you want. You quarrel and fight. You don't have the things you want, because you don't pray for them. When you pray for things, you don't get them because you want them for the wrong reason-for your own pleasure. You unfaithful people! Don't you know that love for this evil world is hatred toward God? Whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God. Do you think this passage means nothing? It says, "The Spirit that lives in us wants us to be his own." But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, "God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people." So place yourselves under God's authority. Resist the devil, and he will run away from you. Come close to God, and he will come close to you. Clean up your lives, you sinners, and clear your minds, you doubters. Be miserable, mourn, and cry. Turn your laughter into mourning and your joy into gloom. Humble yourselves in the Lord's presence. Then he will give you a high position.
1John 3:14-16 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love other believers. The person who doesn't grow in love remains in death. Everyone who hates another believer is a murderer, and you know that a murderer doesn't have eternal life. We understand what love is when we realize that Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for other believers.

Beginning with the single murder of Abel mankind has a historical record of expanded killing for selfish reasons.
Though we don’t like to admit it, every one of us is capable of murder whether imagined or consummated. (Jer.17:9) Jesus said “out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders“, James points it out, John wrote of this truth about us, and history proves it. Tragically the record includes past and current multitude of people claiming Christianity (Biblically defined explicitly as followers of Christ).
As a youth wallowing in feelings of rejection I was at times a dark-hearted 1John 3:15 murderer. I and other candid men I’ve talked with agree we didn’t act out because of fear of social loss, incarceration, and at the time highly probable execution at an early age.
How far is it from thought to action? Judging from Cain and the rest of our history, soon for some, eventual for others; the Cains are typically impatiently impulsive; the others are patiently methodical.
In God’s eyes it matters not whether impulsively or impatiently, whether private action or by government sanction . . . it is still murder.  And murder actual or thought does kill our spiritual manners.

GRACE AND PEACE

GRACE AND PEACE
Friday, November 29, 2013

After writing DT on peace, one respondent asked if there is a relationship between grace and peace? There definitely is when considering the peace that Jesus spoke of. It’s not just a somewhat connection, we cannot actually live in His peace apart from agreeably actively living in His grace. There is no possession of or truly being possessed by the “peace of God” without existent dynamic appropriation of resting in His grace. (Using concordance read “rest” in Hebrews.)
As typical when answering an inquiry, I began by using Strong’s Concordance to look up relatable verses from His Word, and then go to ISBE (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia), and then possibly GotQuestions.org, my favorite commentaries, and other available resources. Then comes what is at times the hard part; writing conveying understanding, and attempting doing so concisely on one page or less. When operating in God’s grace and peace this is a much easier task. Otherwise I windup and spring in many directions as I work.
  There are 16 verses in the KJV that contain both “grace” and “peace”. All are in the NT. For those interested enough to look all up: Rom.1:7; 16:20; 1Cor.1:3; 2Cor.1:2; Gal.1:3; Eph.1:2; Phil.1:2; Col.1:2 1Thes.1:1; 2Thes.1:2; 1Tim.1:2; 2Tim.1:2; Tit.1:4; Phm.1:3; 1Pet.1:2; 2Pet.1:2; 2Jn.1:3; Rev.1:4.
  What is grace anyway?
Greek to English it’s pronounced “charis”. Sound familiar? In Bible school we were taught “Grace is underserved favor and blessing from God.” Grace is agape love, charity in the inth degree that only the Almighty Sovereign Creator and Sustainer can provide.
God’s charity is always operative, for all life is by His grace . . . but not delightfully exceptionally functional us-wise apart from appropriation of His peace.
So what is this peace? Is it different than common human interpretation of peacefulness?
  Indeed it is!
Jesus explained this when He taught “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. . . . I have spoken these things to you so that you might have peace in Me. In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.” MKJV John 14:27; 16:33
Paul summed up result of living in God’s grace and peace, writing “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, Rejoice! Let your moderation be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things. Do those things which you have also learned and received and heard and seen in me. And the God of peace shall be with you. But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me has flourished again. Although you indeed did think, but you lacked opportunity. Not that I speak according to need, for I have learned to be content in whatever state I am. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound. In everything and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (MKJV Phil.4:4-13 Underlining mine.)
In closing this day’s thoughts, to you I say “Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (2Thes.1:2)  EBB4

ULTIMATE GOVERNMENT

ULTIMATE GOVERNMENT
Friday, August 26, 2016

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Dear fellow traveler,
Yesterday I solicited your opinion on the best form of government. This morning I personally respond and share others responses to the question.
As followers of Christ (i.e. Christians), we are given explanation, wisdom, and direction through His Word living and written. First let us go to Old Testament prophecy, all of which is not yet fulfilled. The verse is often quoted at our Christmastime, but in this elder’s opinion, by the many citers not then thoroughly examined beyond perceived quaint manger scenes.

Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his
shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. [Highlighting mine. EBB4]

Going forward to New Testament Revelation prophecy, also as yet unfulfilled.

Revelation 2:27; 12:15; 19:11-16  And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. … And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. … And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Now, as always, I urge you to read, study, and ponder in context the passages cited above. In doing so we see the “good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” is that the ultimate form of government is a benevolent dictatorship. While waiting for the possible in my lifetime I opt for dwelling under the Romans 13:1-7 republic of the United States of America.
Following below is the to-date responses from fellow travelers.
EBB4

·         I want a representative form of government that allows freedom of worship and freedom of religion, protects all citizens including unborn and aged, permits citizens to protect themselves and their families, that abides by the constitution and enforces law and order.  Sharon [NE]
·         I root for DEMOCRACY, but not the kind we have in our country today. When the founding fathers put our country together, they brilliantly developed a system of balance so that ALL citizens would have equal liberty and freedoms that were run and controlled by the majority of its people. They could not fathom or imagine that it would be manipulated by a "concentration of wealth" (political campaigns, the stock market, etc.). They had a great idea, and then money and greed got in the way of "the Great Experiment".  Mike DeMuth [NE]

·         The best form of government was the one our forefathers set up. Farmers, lawyers, businessmen, doctors coming together a couple of times a year and then going back home to live like everyone else. It was never meant to be a subject you can major in in college to become your lifelong career. I am constantly amazed at the number of politicians who go in to Washington with a net worth of $50000, serve for 30 years and retire as multi-millionaires. They serve for so long that they are more about their own power than serving the people who elected them. As you may tell, I'm for term limits and terminating their privileges when they leave.  Cheri [NV]

·         The only form of government I desire is the Torah to be observed by the whole nation of Israel ( all tribes gathered to the Land,  the two sticks becoming one,  the house of Judah and the House of Israel Ezekiel 37:15-28) . All of Israel walking in the Torah(Eze37:28 and they will walk in My ordinances and keep My statutes and observe them. Torah dwelling in our hearts "jer31:33But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my Torah in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people"All nations coming to the Temple to worship the Most High and observing the feast of Sukkot.  Zechariah 14:16-19 . No more War Isaiah 2:3-5. This is my hearts desire for world government.  This and this alone. The Almighty has spoken,  and it will be .
HalleluYah!  Aaron [HI]

·         Looking to the Word for the answer: 1) The best form of government is for the whole world to submit to God alone (Ex 20:3, 1 Sa 8:1-9).     2) The next best form of national government is a kingship - with the vital prerequisite that the king is a man of godly character (Deut 17:14-17).  This should be done with caution though to ensure electing a king is not done just to try to get out of submitting to God (1 Sa 8:6-9).  Under the king should be a relatively small number of leaders who have the authority to make decisions for the community as a whole - again with the vital prerequisite being that the people chosen to lead are people of character and integrity who meet the Biblical requirements for leadership.  In the church this is called eldership, but that same model can be applicable for city, county, state, ... (Acts 14:23, 1 Ti 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-9, 1 Pet 5: 1-4). The word "king" can be replaced with "president", "prime minister", .... as long as the functions are Biblically correct.  In the Bible, "elder", "overseer", and "shepherd" are used interchangeably to indicate the same person/office.   David [NE]

·         The best form of government is a dictator if you have the right dictator!  Al Heger [KS]
·         When Jesus returns as King.  Then, and only then, am I all in for a dictatorship.  Penny [NE]

·         A very good and timely question. I suggest the best form of government is a dictatorship with a perfect dictator in charge. We will only see this when Jesus Christ returns and sets up his 1000 year reign on earth. A perfect government with the Saints assigned responsibilities. Won`t that be fun. And, no more political calls and ads. Until then, I guess the Republic the founding fathers gave us is still the best. Best wishes and thank you for your continuing faithfulness to our Lord.

GOVERNMENT
Thursday, August 25, 2016

Dear fellow travelers,
My guess is you are quite a mix politically: republicans, democrats, libertarians, independents, parliamentarians, monarchists, socialist, conservative, non-voter and a few more. I also suspect that many of you hold strong opinions when it comes to local, county, state, national, and world government.
I am asking your opinion on the best form of government?

NO SUCH SAT AND MOVED ON

NO SUCH SAT AND MOVED ON
Wednesday, August 24, 2016

2Corinthians [ESV] 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

Examining self in light of God’s Word is not like taking the SAT test and moving on. Moving within an attitude of examination by the Word is essential to continuing spiritual maturation.  Spiritual maturity is revealed in everyday relationship with God and our fellow man within and without the John 1:12 family.
  I think about this often.
For some, growth is quite obvious. I cannot however evidence quitting tobacco, abstaining from alcohol, ceasing to run with wild women et al, for due to combination of love and fear I never did so.
For the rest of us, more passive and polite in person, spiritual maturation is not so readily observed.
Yesterday, something helpful occurred while I was pondering questions of “Where have I grown?” and “Where do I yet need to grow or leave plateau?”
An inmate that I have been corresponding with for quite a while once again came up for parole consideration. He sent me an AccessMail informing that he had been denied and is “sent back for another year”. He then stated how thankful he is for the place where he is.
OK, so you say “You’re not incarcerated or up for parole and then rejected! What does it have to do with you?”
  Quite a lot, really.
I don’t like authority, especially the bozo kind. As a passive-aggressive youth, I was very much in bondage to my anti-authority feelings.
In answer to “Where have I grown?” . . . upon reflection with thanksgiving, much where my anti-authority attitude is concerned.
In answer to “Where do I need to grow or leave plateau?” . . . upon reflection with sadness, my anti-authority old man only has one foot in the grave at times.
  Still walking in Philippians 2:12.

THE TREE TO BE

THE TREE TO BE
Tuesday, August 23, 2016

The poetic wisdom the Lord provides via Psalms for our well-being is delightful. Psalm 1 is a favorite, and as with the 23rd, I like it best heard in KJV language. Please enjoy and benefit by reading it aloud with me this morning.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

PS. All men and women that participate in Good News Jail & Prison Ministry Life Learning dorms program must memorize this psalm.

THE INFLUENCE OF TREES

THE INFLUENCE OF TREES
Monday, August 22, 2016

Awoke thinking on today’s subject. An odd one for sure as in “Where did that come from for a DT?” Then came the difficulty in wording the title. Then came the work of trying to make word sense of it for readers.
Trees are good, right? Americans love beautiful forests!
The Nebraska Board of Educational Lands & Funds is the largest landowner in the state. (Surprised are you?) The almost 1.26 million acres of agricultural land is leased to farmers and ranchers. The income goes to supporting Nebraska public schools. The amount is no small acorn, 573, 000, 000 dollars in the last 15 years.
Everyone loves cedar, right? Well, not everyone, including NBELF, ranchers, this and other taxpayers.
Red cedar trees are invading NBELF properties at a steady rate, about 2% a year. Though the land trust began control programs in the 80s and presently invests $400, 000 per year, it’s a losing costly battle. Said cost is not singular. The loss of 2% per year of leased NBELF gazing land is affecting Nebraska’s $7.4 billion cattle industry, the ancillary small town businesses, public school budgets and taxpayer you and I.
We Norte Americanos have developed a growing delight in noshing avocados. Many of which are conveniently imported from Mexico. This means increased income for the growers, slightly less immigration, but at a cost to something else we Americans love, butterflies.
Avocados grow best in areas adjacent to the forests that our beloved butterflies habitat in during our North America winter – to meet the increasing demand for avocados these forests are falling to the bite of chainsaw and axe.
Now to the personal odd thought this morning as all the above was tumbling about in my cranium: Pondering Jesus’ remarks on trees, the question “What kind of tree are you?” kept rising to the crown of this 80+ year old still growing tree.

IS ANGER ALWAYS BAD?

IS ANGER ALWAYS BAD?
Thursday, September 26, 2013

Ephesians [NLT] 4:1-31 Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all. However, he has given each one of us a special gift [We each are equipped.] through the generosity of Christ. That is why the Scriptures say, “When he ascended to the heights, he led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to his people.”[Ps.68:18]
Notice that it says “he ascended.” This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world.  And the same one who descended is the one who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that he might fill the entire universe with himself.
Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ.
Then we will no longer be immature like children. We won’t be tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching. We will not be influenced when people try to trick us with lies so clever they sound like the truth. Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.
With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles do, for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.
But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. [Rom.12:1-3] Put on your new nature [2Cor.5:17], created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.
So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body. And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.”[Ps.4:4] Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.
If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need. Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own [Jn.1:12], guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption [2Cor.1:22; Eph.1:13; 4:30].
Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

We know anger can be bad or good; all anger is not sinful.
Exercising sinful self-righteous anger we walk other than His Way, and suffer God’s resistance. Exercising godly-righteous anger we walk His Way, and realize God’s empowerment. (Jam.4:1-10)
Anger inherent to one’s grieving loss is prime example of this distinction. Apart from reliance upon The Way (Jn.14:6), we grieve God’s Holy Spirit and suffer loss spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. In The Way, we maintain, even gain, healthy maturation spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Dear fellow sojourners, be angry, but sin not. Rest well. (Eph.4:26)  EBB4

LAMPSTAND LOSS

LAMPSTAND LOSS
Friday, August 19, 2016

Revelation [NLT] 2:1-7 [This is a revelation from Jesus Christ,] “Write this letter to the angel of the church in Ephesus. This is the message from the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one who walks among the seven gold lampstands: “I know all the things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first!  Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches. But this is in your favor: You hate the evil deeds of the Nicolaitans, just as I do. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give fruit from the tree of life in the paradise of God.

Still thinking about “If you don’t repent, I [Jesus] will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches.” In pondering I remembered some things.
The first set was experiences as child playing games at night, on the farm, as a Boy Scout and later with our Christian service Brigade. The second was first learned from Uncle Jim McGee, combat veteran from trench warfare in The Great War, and later taught by Marine leaders in Boy Scouts and Brigade.
Only those of my generation understand what it’s like to be “clotheslined” while chasing  a shorter playmate in the dark.
On the farm there were no pole lights at first. We didn’t have electricity you see. (Couldn’t resist the pun.) Walking at night sans flashlight to the barn, hog pens, or chicken house could be hazardous, especially considering my brothers habit of dropping items where he last used them so “They’ll be there tomorrow.” Among my brother’s deposited items was sometimes the flashlight, or he had removed batteries for more important use. The rooted path thru the old apple orchard was the worst of the lot.
Campouts with BSA and CSB were special fun when we played “night maneuvers” in the woods sans campfire or flashlights. (Any light meant forfeiture.) Two teams, preferably a guest Brigade, competing at Capture the Flag was a favorite. The next morning we compared (bragged) our purple and red badges.
Uncle Jim, when under the influence, told tales of war. One was of “A young fool” believing that not smoking at night in the open was a stupid rule, and paid the ultimate price.  Another was how they became lost on patrol on an overcast night. Their officer had safely rigged a flashlight that briefly blinked at irregular intervals so his men could home and not wander into the German lines.
  Summing up:
·         Without a lampstand people stumble, fall, and walk in confusion.
·         Without a lampstand you are not a beacon for others.
Does this help with understanding? It did for me.
Then there’s the questions of is there lampstand visible in the local church or denomination we belong to . . . or is it that we do need to repent, think and act in more godly love of Jesus and one another lest our lampstand be soon removed?

ENTRUSTED TO MENTOR

ENTRUSTED TO MENTOR
Thursday, August 18, 2016

2Corinthians 5:1-21; 2Timothy 2:1-2

How has your Christian position as God’s ambassador been going? This week? Yesterday? Today?
  Mine continues active and developing.
I say to you, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. You have read or heard me teach matters from God’s Word that has been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.
There was time past that I could not bring myself to ask the above questions or exhort as I have in the 3rd paragraph. Why so, because I was conflicted in fear of pridefulness. I am not a Christian of Paul’s stature!
Then one day in once again reading and thinking about Romans 12:1-3 I realized how applicable it is to my false sense of meekness:
·         Almighty God designated me one of His ambassadors.
·         As His ambassador I have been and continue to be entrusted.
·         My fear was misplaced.
·         My fear displaced my “measure of faith”.
Paul said “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” (NLT)
My awakening, actually a come-uppance on my false humility, was in finally applying to the matter what I’d been taught by one of my mentors, “Sometimes we must look at the other side of what God’s Word says.” Isn’t Paul also teaching that we are not to think of our position as lower than it is? Indeed so!
So, with ambassadorial confidence I can say listen to me, tell others what I have taught you, and in doing so mentor them to entrust yet others who will entrust others who will entrust others who will …
Now, in e-discussing this topic with David Repair he shared some applicable verses.

Seeking/listening to advice and counsel, from Proverbs (GW):
·         A nation will fall when there is no direction, but with many advisers there is victory. (11:14)
·         Whoever loves discipline loves to learn, but whoever hates correction is a dumb animal. … A stubborn fool considers his own way the right one, but a person who listens to advice is wise. (12:1, 15)
·         Arrogance produces only quarreling, but those who take advice gain wisdom. … Whoever walks with wise people will be wise, but whoever associates with fools will suffer. (13:10, 20)
·         Without advice plans go wrong, but with many advisers they succeed. … The ear that listens to a life-giving warning will be at home among wise people. Whoever ignores discipline despises himself, but the person who listens to warning gains understanding. The fear of the LORD is discipline leading to wisdom, and humility comes before honor. (15:22, 31-33)
·         Plans are confirmed by getting advice, and with guidance one wages war. (20:18)
·         After all, with the right strategy you can wage war, and with many advisers there is victory. (24:6)
·         Perfume and incense make the heart glad, but the sweetness of a friend is a fragrant forest. (27:9)

Regarding humility (GW):
·         When he mocks the mockers, he is gracious to humble people.  Wise people will inherit honor, but fools will bear disgrace. (3:34-35)
·         A person's pride will humiliate him, but a humble spirit gains honor. (29:23)
·         The eyes of arrogant people will be humbled. High and mighty people will be brought down. On that day the LORD alone will be honored. The LORD of Armies will have his day against all who are arrogant and conceited and all who are proud of themselves (they will be humbled), … I have made all these things. "That is why all these things have come into being," declares the LORD. I will pay attention to those who are humble and sorry for their sins and who tremble at my word. (Isa.2:11-12; 66:2)
·         Whoever honors himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be honored. (Mt.23:12)
·         Those who honor themselves will be humbled, but people who humble themselves will be honored." (Lk.14:110
·         But God shows us even more kindness. Scripture says, "God opposes arrogant people, but he is kind to humble people." (Jam.4:6)
·         Young people, in a similar way, place yourselves under the authority of spiritual leaders. Furthermore, all of you must serve each other with humility, because God opposes the arrogant but favors the humble. Be humbled by God's power so that when the right time comes he will honor you. (1Pet.5:5-6)

I close this morning’s thoughts with my life verses chosen rightly over 50 years ago, and still very much currently needed: The LORD says, "I will instruct you. I will teach you the way that you should go. I will advise you as my eyes watch over you. Don't be stubborn like a horse or mule. They need a bit and bridle in their mouth to restrain them, or they will not come near you." (GW Ps.32:8-9)

MEAT EATING MENTORS

MEAT EATING MENTORS
Wednesday, August 17, 2016

1Peter 2:1-5 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Heb 5:8  Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Hebrews 5:9-14 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

It was years before I discovered that having mentors is not the norm in Christianity, even among evangelicals. And it wasn’t until later that I realized how fortunate I am in not only having multiple mentors but also that they were meat eaters and therefore exceptionally learned and wise; Berean men that sought and listened to our Lord and His mature undershepherds. (Act.17:11)
Those first, then later staffers, made it very plain that I was to eventually move on from milk to meat and potatoes in order that I too would be a mentor exhorting others in the way of our Lord with my senses discerning good and evil. I soon found out that doing and maintaining this responsibility requires work, more work, and continuing work. There is no mentors’ high plateau of attainment to retire upon. Being in the service of the King of kings is an unending occupation that He does not terminate. That is up to us.
Let us not be as Willard, a man that from cradle roll until demise faithfully attended church and Sunday school and especially never missed a potluck lunch or supper. I came to know him the last few years of his life. Willard did not lack in intelligence. He could quote history, facts and figures galore from his employment, hobbies, and other areas of interest. He could rattle off States and capitols, presidents, sports data and more, but when it came to God’s Word he would often say “I didn’t know that was in the Bible.” Though Willard lived 70 years, he tragically never became of “full age” but remained a juvenile “unskillful in the word of righteousness”.
Let us be as those of Berea, not at all like the Willards that populate Thessalonicas. Let us live as noble men and women eagerly working at studying and examining the Word received. And in so doing mature to the status of mentoring others in the Way of our Lord.
  Amen?

THE ROMANS ROAD

THE ROMANS ROAD
Tuesday, August 16, 2016

In the 6 weeks that coworker Bud Bond patiently witnessed to me and answered my questions, he kept coming back to the Romans Road and having me read the verses aloud and say what I thought they meant. On my last evening of my being “condemned already” (Jn.3:18) he gave me a copy Dr. Orr’s notes on 10 reasons to believe the Bible is the Word of God and challenged me to read it. I did so on my lunchtime and breaks. About 12:30am while driving home alone I said to the effect “Lord, I don’t understand all this. But I do want what You have for me.” And that was it. No fancy prepared prayer. No church. But the next morning I crossed the pasture between my best friend’s home and ours and using the Bible Bud had tabbed I shared the Romans Road and told him what I’d done.
For this morning DT I planned on writing explanation of the Romans Road but instead decided to share essay on the topic from Gotquestions.org.
I encourage you, if you haven’t done so already, to a-b-c-d-e or 1-2-3-4-5 tab the Romans Road verses in a Bible you use in order to be fumble-free in witnessing. I also urge you to do as Bud Bond did. Get the other person to read them to you and ask what they think each verse means. (Always ask “Would mind reading?” as the person may be illiterate or have sight problem.)
Be God’s ambassador of reconciliation. (2Cor.5:17-21) Witness of His gift of redemption. (Rom.6:23; Eph.2:8-9)

Question: "What is the Romans Road to salvation?"

Answer:
The Romans Road to salvation is a way of explaining the good news of salvation using verses from the Book of Romans. It is a simple yet powerful method of explaining why we need salvation, how God provided salvation, how we can receive salvation, and what are the results of salvation.
The first verse on the Romans Road to salvation is Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." We have all sinned. We have all done things that are displeasing to God. There is no one who is innocent. Romans 3:10-18 gives a detailed picture of what sin looks like in our lives.

The second Scripture on the Romans Road to salvation, Romans 6:23, teaches us about the consequences of sin - "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." The punishment that we have earned for our sins is death. Not just physical death, but eternal death!
The third verse on the Romans Road to salvation picks up where Romans 6:23 left off, "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 5:8 declares, "But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Jesus Christ died for us! Jesus' death paid for the price of our sins. Jesus' resurrection proves that God accepted Jesus' death as the payment for our sins.
The fourth stop on the Romans Road to salvation is Romans 10:9, "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Because of Jesus' death on our behalf, all we have to do is believe in Him, trusting His death as the payment for our sins - and we will be saved! Romans 10:13 says it again, "for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Jesus died to pay the penalty for our sins and rescue us from eternal death. Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, is available to anyone who will trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
The final aspect of the Romans Road to salvation is the results of salvation. Romans 5:1 has this wonderful message, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." Through Jesus Christ we can have a relationship of peace with God. Romans 8:1 teaches us, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Because of Jesus' death on our behalf, we will never be condemned for our sins. Finally, we have this precious promise of God from Romans 8:38-39, "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Would you like to follow the Romans Road to salvation? If so, here is a simple prayer you can pray to God. Saying this prayer is a way to declare to God that you are relying on Jesus Christ for your salvation. The words themselves will not save you. Only faith in Jesus Christ can provide salvation! "God, I know that I have sinned against you and am deserving of punishment. But Jesus Christ took the punishment that I deserve so that through faith in Him I could be forgiven. With your help, I place my trust in You for salvation. Thank You for Your wonderful grace and forgiveness - the gift of eternal life! Amen!"

TELLING THE STORIES

TELLING THE STORIES: More of That Which My Early Mentors Taught Me
Monday, August 15, 2016

Hebrew [CEV] 9:27-28 We die only once, and then we are judged. So Christ died only once to take away the sins of many people. But when he comes again, it will not be to take away sin. He will come to save everyone who is waiting for him.

Jesus instructed the healed demoniac to go to those he knew and tell them of how great the things He had done for him, and had compassion on him. Though an ancient narrative, by the record of Mark 5:1-20 Jesus speaks to us in this day. We, the redeemed, are to tell others of His redemption.
Every person that is trusting Jesus as Savior has a story to tell. And His story makes for our story and our story makes for telling His story. Telling the inclusive story is wise.
First, we know that His story is definitely worthy and needs telling. (Rom.10:14; Act.4:12)
Secondly, get it straight that your story is worth telling whether sinner great or minor. The only real impediment is our attitude and sense of values. Does our attitude include caring about lost souls “condemned already” (Jn.3:18)? And how much do we value our relationship with God (Heb.11:6)?
Ah, but how to? As my mentors taught me, the answer is no differently than was in training for any other task.

Things to mind in preparation:
1.       Write it out as an outline. Possibly jotted notes at first.
2.       Then refine through prayerful thought and editing. Seek assistance if needed.
3.       Eliminate trite platitudes and clichés.
4.       Emphasize the positive. Don’t center on sinful details.
5.       Avoid generalities. No travelogues! Be specific.
6.       Speak pictorially if and when possible.
7.       Always focus on and emphasize point 4 below.

Suggested outline to follow:
1.       Who I am (secular). Name, background, job, present status.
2.       What I was before I trusted Christ.
3.       How I came to trust Christ.
4.       What Jesus Christ means in my life.
A.      Fellowship                                                  H.  deliverance from self
B.      Love                                                              I.    __________
C.      Forgiveness
D.      Friend
E.       Adoption
F.       New thinking (repentance)
G.     Peace, freedom from fear

Now develop your testimony into a short, 3 to 5 minutes, and longer version so as to facilitate delivery under varying circumstance. Then, as iron sharpens iron, practice with a fellow traveler. (Pr.27:17)
Suggestion: Once honed, begin your telling by postal and e-mailing copies to your “ten cities” (Mk.5:20), family, friends, and acquaintances. Keep copies available for later use.
Doing all the above will continually further equip us to graciously tell His story that changed our story.

TELLING OF GOD'S LOVE AND GRACE

TELLING OF GOD’S LOVE AND GRACE
Sunday, August 14, 2016

Mark 5:1-20 [Jesus said unto the healed demoniac] "Go home to your family, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you."  So the man left. He began to tell how much Jesus had done for him in the Ten Cities. Everyone was amazed.

It is a given that after we trust Christ we are His witnesses (Act.1:8), salt and light (Mt.5:13-16), ambassadors of reconciliation (2Cor.5:10-21). This is who we are but not always who we are actively. There are a number of reasons for this, not the least of which is in one or more ways our suppression of God’s indwelling Holy Spirit. (1Cor.3:16; 6:19; 1Thes.5:19-20)
John Hoffman often told of an uneducated old peasant woman he met. After trusting Christ she walked the mountain paths to remote villages carrying Bible in hand and gospel on lips witnessing of Christ the Redeemer. Many listeners trusted Jesus and dozens of local congregation were founded.
How did she do this with little biblical training? She loved her Lord and cared deeply for lost souls “already condemned” (Jn.3:18) and had a strong desire to tell of God’s love and grace.
I walked no mountain trails, but I did immediately the morning after trusting Christ as Savior traverse a dewy pasture to tell my closest friends. Presenting the same “Romans road” that I’d been led upon just hours before by coworker Bud Bond. I met with firm rejection. Saddened but not discouraged in the least I sought guidance in ambassadorship. My mentors began with “It’s not all about you. It’s about Jesus. You are not being rejected, He is.” One mentor laughed as he told of some hearers trusting Christ but never accepting him, his point being that God does not need ambassadors with persuasive personalities. Together they emphasized that inviting people to church without my personal witness is a form of suppressing God’s Holy Spirit within me
Peter said that we are always to be prepared to tell the reason of our hope. (1Pt.3:15) Ah, but how to do so may be our problem? Tomorrow I’ll share more of what my mentors taught me about being an active witness for Christ.

BUT WHADDA AM I GONNA SAY?

BUT WHADDA AM I GONNA SAY?
Friday, August 12, 2016

Acts [GW] 4:11-13 [Peter said to those within his hearing] He [Jesus] is the stone that the builders rejected, the stone that has become the cornerstone. No one else can save us. Indeed, we can be saved only by the power of the one named Jesus and not by any other person." After they found out that Peter and John had no education or special training, they were surprised to see how boldly they spoke. They realized that these men had been with Jesus.
2Timothy 4:1-2 I solemnly call on you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge those who are living and those who are dead. I do this because Christ Jesus will come to rule the world. Be ready to spread the word whether or not the time is right. Point out errors, warn people, and encourage them. Be very patient when you teach.

No argument with whether those of God’s John 1:12 family are to tell others the good news (The gospel); the privilege and responsibility to lovingly reach out to those “condemned already” (Jn.3:11-21) by and in His love and grace is a present and eternal need.
However, as a fellow believer said to me, “But whadda am I gonna say?” And then he went on to lament a long list of reasons why he didn’t verbally work at fulfilling our Lord’s marching order recorded in Mark 16:15 and the job description spelled out in 2Corinthians 5:14-21.
OK, so what do you feel comfortable talking about, family, job, hobby, sports, politics, church?
Why do we feel comfortable talking about these topics but not about God’s gift of eternal life with present peace and assurance accompanied by gaining understanding of our eternal purpose while this side of death? There are answers to this question. This morning a few in particular come to mind:
·         Knowing more about, giving more effort and thought to temporal interests and matters other than lost souls and the only good news that can save them now and forever. (2Tim.2:9-16)
·         Because in our heart we cannot honestly say “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,“ (Rom.1:16)
·         Because in my heart I don’t see that the things I willingly talk about are my story(s), the things of highest importance to me. (Col.4:5-6)
·         The two great motivators in life are fear or love. If neither one compels to manifest 2Corinthians 5:14-21 in life, we are left with the question of wherein is our conscience grounded, or is it buried? Or possibly never “enlightened” to begin with? (Eph.1:17-20)
If not already doing so, let us be motivated by Christ’ love to tell others of their need for redemption by and through Him alone -- for there is no other with the capacity to presently and forever redeem. Let us be like Peter, boldly telling God’s Good News as our story. Then as we study and learn more, to add the ability to give God’s authentic answers to life’s many other questions.

DEFINING LOSS TO LOSS

DEFINING LOSS TO LOSS
Thursday, August 11, 2016

Psalm 119
Romans chapter 12; 1Corinthians chapters 12 & 13
Revelation [ESV] 1:1a; 2:1-7 The revelation of Jesus Christ, … "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: 'The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands."'I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent. Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.'

I’m still pondering Revelation 2:4-5 in its immediate and the greater context of Scripture.
OK, we know without doubt that the passage is a disclosure from Jesus Christ to get the attention of the church at Ephesus circa A.D. 96 and, the Word of God being timeless, for serious thought and examination for all eyes and ears taking notice until this very moment.
We also know without uncertainty that the church at Ephesus did not repent and consequently Jesus removed their “lampstand from its place” resulting in the once dynamically influential congregation diminishing to nonexistence. Additionally we see that though the church had good works that the Lord commended them for, those healthy elements could not salvage the church. Clearly the reason being is they “abandoned the love they had at first”.
I am reminded that though yes the local church is a body, but the body has individual members – the church responsible as a body but not as apart from individual responsibility for maintenance of affections: I cannot simply blame the body. As a member of the body with the Holy Spirit ministry gift of exhortation I must speak of abandonment. (This being a major reason I am still in the local congregation rather than walking away.)
Would that “first love” be Jesus Christ? Indeed so!
And how did He say our love for Him is manifested? "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. … As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (ESV Jn.14:15; 15:9-12)
There are many commandments His, but my thoughts initially turn to several problematic contributors to lampstand removal.
·         Misguided affairs: Lack of individual and congregational seeking, finding, implementing God’s direction from His Word.
·         Internal affairs: Infighting, unforgiveness among congregants present or departed.
·         External affairs: As in the lack of being a Mark 16:15 Great Commission Christian, individually and as the body of Christ. When is the last time I or our local church has authentically spoken the gospel to a soul(s) “already condemned” in need of Jesus Christ as the one and only Redeemer?
Philia,
