SUNFLOWERS IN OUR LIFE

SUNFLOWERS
Tuesday, May 6, 2014
Jon Mayo is a Christian, he, his lovely wife and family are fellows at our home congregation here in Omaha, Nebraska. He's a farm boy, and as with most country lads I know, loves to tell earthy stories.
Sunflower was his aunt and uncle's horse. The aunt was no longer able to care for the aging and blind in one eye horse, so Jon's kind father took it in.
Jon was by his recollection in the 2nd or 3rd grade. He loved to ride Sunflower.
One day he was riding Sunflower bareback in the yard . . . and the horse suddenly decided to return to its old home. Jon pulled and yanked on the reins to no avail as Sunflower rapidly travelled determinately down the lane and onto the road. To Jon's relief, his Dad and older brother soon caught up in the farm truck and saved Jon.
In retelling this tale last Sunday morning, Jon said he learned that even good things we enjoy can get out of hand. Oh so true. As I sat quietly in pew, my mind went to Hebrews 12:1-2.
