DEATH & TAXES

DEATH AND TAXES
Friday, March 31, 2017

Matthew 22:15-21 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. [Mk.12:13-17; Lk.19:19-26]

“The only two things sure in life are death and taxes!” is ancient adage, though not precisely iron-clad truth; for what with historical tax evasion, the ever present and growing underground economy, and IRS poor enforcement and collection record, taxation is irresolute. (For definition and understanding go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underground_economy and/or relevant news article at  http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/Read.aspx?GUID=3E2579A7-6002-4048-97BB-46679C5D8A88 )
Death, with the rarest of exception, a matter of certainty (Heb.9:27; 11:5; 2Kings 2:1-25).
Taxes required and/or demanded are one thing, taxes paid is quite another story for a portion of society.
Though for many, deliberate tax evasion is abhorrent for moral or “cold feet” reason, others don’t hesitate to take advantage of the shadow economy, including a few that pass laws against all while practicing such, knowing that enforcement (i.e. getting caught) is rare and penalty customarily light.
Lord Jesus Christ spoke to this seemingly neither black nor white, but too many people presumably cultural gray ethics. In doing so it must be noted that though Jesus responded in kind to the attempt to entangle Him, His reply includes godly connection. His Word elsewhere clearly explaining that we are to give government tribute and custom (includes taxes), obey civil law; doing so without interfering with honoring God; in fact when properly done, glorifying Him. (1Pet.2:11-17)
In Matthew 17:24-27 is a relatable account on taxation and the paying thereof. Especially intriguing (and humorous I think) is Peter the commercial fisherman being asked about paying taxes, with Jesus responding for him to go fish; a lesson for the self-employed in particular?
I will die, you will die. Questions will asked: Will some have to do with taxes?

HASTINESS

HASTINESS
Thursday, March 30, 2017

Romans [MKJV 15:1-7 Then we who are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good, to building up. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached You fell on Me." For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, so that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. And may the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like minded toward one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one mind and one mouth you may glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore receive one another as Christ also received us, to the glory of God.

This morning I read that Nebraska Governor Pete Rickets signed into law requirement that “people who quit their jobs without just cause to [must] re-qualify for unemployment benefits through subsequent employment before they are eligible to receive payments.” Quit sans qualifying reason and suffer loss and receive no unemployment benefits. Though I have never even considered such action, this is something I have observed others commit. I have however been impatient and hasty in other ways. Thusly reminded this morning, brought me to again pondering the following thoughts.
A major goal I continue to work on is thoughtfulness in connecting all things having to do with life and death with and in God’s Word; the thoughtfulness that does not rush to conclusions or decisions always automatically following party, denominational or political, lines. Recently this effort was largely reflected in DT “I AM NOT A BAPTIST”. Which I am pleased to say is provocative both pro and con judging from readers’ reactions; some realizing and accepting who they are and what they are to be about first and foremost as believers, others defending their party.
Reflecting on what once was of me, I see that I have gained in tribulation working patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: the hope that delivers me from shame; because the love of God is shed abroad in my heart by God’s Holy Spirit which has been gifted unto me. (Rom.5:3-5) But at times it is quite obvious to me, and others, yesterday for example, that I have not yet obtained the perfection that Jesus speaks of. (Mt.5:48)
To further exercise (exorcise?) this morning I review the following from ISBE:

PATIENCE, n. pa'shens. [L. patientia, from patior, to suffer.]
1. The suffering of afflictions, pain, toil, calamity, provocation or other evil, with a calm, unruffled temper; endurance without murmuring or fretfulness. Patience may spring from constitutional fortitude, from a kind of heroic pride, or from christian submission to the divine will.
2. A calm temper which bears evils without murmuring or discontent.
3. The act or quality of waiting long for justice or expected good without discontent.
4. Perseverance; constancy in labor or exertion. He learnt with patience, and with meekness taught.
5. The quality of bearing offenses and injuries without anger or revenge.
6. Sufferance; permission. [Not used.]
7. A plant, a species of rumex of dock.

And as to even point #7, shouldn’t I “be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.“ ? (Jer.17:8) Be patient O’ my soul!

ALTERNATIVE FACTS

ALTERNATIVE FACTS

“Figures never lie, but liars always figure.” Edwin Bennett Bullock 3rd

My Dad of course never heard of the newly coined phrase “alternative facts”, but being an astute man he certainly would recognize the fact of it.
Lying was taboo in our family. Being a trial and error lad I tested the truth of it at personal heated expense and a soapy mouth. Not being a quick learner I tasted several brands of soap and depleted the side yard peach tree of tender limbs. Though Dad was neither washer nor whipper, he did warn me to beware of experts quoting statistics.
When older I discovered what God says about lying goes far beyond His succinct straightforward #9 commandment.
Here’s a dandy alternative fact example for you: Overall crime rates have gone down. Oh really?! Check out https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:U.S._incarceration_rates_1925_onwards.png
and consider that if going down then why has the ratio of incarnated gone up nearly tenfold since the mid 70’s?
Rant against alternative facts all I want to, but it still, as ever, boils down to my personal consideration and application of James chapter 3 . . . with the end goal of not simply not lying but to be always sowing the fruit of righteousness in peace. (3:18)
  So be it.

PS. Admittedly there are other factors involved. Though a minor stat, fewer executions meaning fewer inmates is one.

LIKE A BRICK WALL

LIKE A BRICK WALL

Psalm [MKJV] 90:11-12  Who knows the power of Your anger? And as Your fear is, so is Your wrath. So teach us to number our days, so that we may bring a heart of wisdom.
Proverbs 1:1-7 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; to know wisdom and instruction; to recognize the words of understanding; to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and uprightness; to give sense to the simple, knowledge and judgment to the young man; the wise hears and increases learning; and understanding ones get wisdom; to understand a proverb and its meaning; the words of the wise, and their acute sayings. The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Matthew chapter 5, Jesus sermon on the mount  .. Blessed are the poor in spirit! For theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. … Therefore be perfect, even as your Father in Heaven is perfect.

Patty, a wonderful lady and our fine church musician, did the Children’s Moment Sunday morning. (I always benefit from the lessons and confess to sometimes remembering them but not pastors’ sermons.) She told the story of Zacchaeus encounter with Jesus. (Lk.19:1-10) After lunch I caved in to my impish side and had some of my kind of fun with friend Sharon, lifelong educator and sometimes grammar nazi.
“Did, as Patty said, Zacchaeus become a Christian?”
Sharon responded that yes, he did.
I then pointed out that he became a follower of Christ. There was no “Christians” until years later. (Lk.19:1-10)
In my salad days when this hair-splitting was done to me I felt duped, stuped, and angry. Little did I understand that those events were teaching moments, not at all meant to embarrass me but designed to tear down my being like a brick wall; the old saw being “You can’t teach anything to a brick wall.”
How thankful and appreciative I am for those that did trowel and chisel me, they desiring truth in my innermost being (Ps.51:6) and they reminding that brick and mortar are still always available near at hand . . . and that apart from the attribute of being teachable I could expect no ultimately worthwhile “perfect” maturation.

EVIDENTIAL TRANSFORMING POWER

EVIDENTIAL TRANSFORMING POWER
Sunday, March 26, 2017

Hebrews [MKJV] 4:12-13 For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight, but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
Titus 3:3-8 For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, slaving for various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that being justified by His grace, we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Faithful is the Word, and as to these things, I desire that you strongly affirm that those believing God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable to men.

Individual transforming Romans 12:2 regenerative power is personal proof of the veracity of God’s Word. John 1:1 trust produces John 3:3 change in how a man sees all things pertaining to life and death; new vision that alters thinking and lifestyle, especially relationships.
As with even the simplest experiences in life, such as the flavor of an orange or the serious lifelong encounter of the love of a woman, those that have not personally tasted the sweetness cannot comprehend through the mere words of others. Realizing God’s transforming power does not come via intelligence or the lack thereof. It comes only by the Word Living and written.
This I know by personal experience. This I know from contact with and observation of individuals of all social levels from good people to bad fellows, the disinterested, the driven, the mediocre, the sad, the happy, escapists, and those shifting in between. As in my life, when they trusted the Word living and written, thinking, sight, and action changed and continues to change.
The morning after I trusted Jesus I knew I was not the same person. My concern involving priorities was drastically altered by John 3:3 radically new sight; vision that motivated me to tell others.  I immediately began with my best friend outside of Ann. The result was not a happy one as he then and there ended our fellowship. My new John 3:3 sight did not however die along with our friendship. I was not discouraged, my concern for him or other dead men walking was undiminished. (Jn.3:18)

The Word’s transforming power never ends so long as we are receptive. This I continue to know, for as my physical sight diminishes, my John 3:3 vision increases. If you have not, are not, thus farsighted . . . please do accept the Word and gain God’s vista of life and death.  EBB4

RESPONSES

On Friday, March 17, I invited you to weigh in on the question “Beyond His sacrificial death, what aspects of His humanity, personality, do you appreciate most of all?”
Several responded that they appreciated His sacrificial death most of all. A few commented on Jesus’ humanity, His personality. As promised, here they are:

Sharon: My first thought was His love and patience.  He was kind but offered correction where needed i.e. Mary & Martha, Peter.

Albert: That almighty God would even consider loving and caring about me.

MIKE: The characteristic of Jesus that constantly appears in my thoughts and challenges me the most when my emotions get the best of me, is HUMILITY. This element of Jesus always seems to go hand-in-hand with the compassion he had for others. It remains a guide to all of us, especially in a world where we are constantly told to "take care of yourself by looking good to others' and "I am the most important person above all others." Humility is becoming a lost element in our in our society and yes, in our souls..

C.L.: He not only listened to His Father, He listened to men, women, and children . . . and me.

JUDAS ESCARIOT

JUDAS ISCARIOT
Thursday, March 23, 2017

I was discussing with some friends, the topic of Judas. Was he doomed from the start, or did he have a choice to not be the "bad guy"?
I would appreciate your insight on this topic.
Thank you,
Jacque (KS)

Judas Iscariot, one of the original 12, the betrayer of Jesus, has been and continues to be debated. For some he is a hero, the Cainites Gnostic sect for one. Judas is purported to have written a lost hostile gospel.
Let it be understood, Judas did not suddenly impulsively betray Jesus. As Jesus noted prior to, he did so much earlier. The following is from International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE). Please do gain the greater benefit by looking up verse references, reading in context, and investing prayerful consideration.

Judas Iscariot
is-kar´i-ot (Ἰούδας Ἰσκαριώτης, Ioúdas Iskariṓtēs, i.e. 'ı̄sh erı̄yōth, “Judas, man of Kerioth”): One of the twelve apostles and the betrayer of Jesus; for etymology, etc., see JUDAS.

I. Life.
Judas was, as his second name indicates, a native of Kerioth or Karioth. The exact locality of Kerioth (compare Jos_15:25) is doubtful, but it lay probably to the South of Judea, being identified with the ruins of el Karjetein (compare A. Plummer, article “Judas Iscariot” in HDB).

1. Name and Early History:
He was the son of Simon (Joh_13:2) or Simon Iscariot (Joh_6:71; Joh_13:26), the meaning of Iscariot explaining why it was applied to his father also. The first Scriptural reference to Judas is his election to the apostleship (compare Mat_10:4; Mar_3:19; Luk_6:16). He may have been present at the preaching of John the Baptist at Bethany beyond Jordan (compare Joh_1:28), but more probably he first met Jesus during the return of the latter through Judea with His followers (compare Joh_3:22). According to the Gospel of the Twelve Apostles (see SIMON THE CANANAEAN), Judas was among those who received the call at the Sea of Tiberias (compare Mat_4:18-22).

2. Before the Betrayal:
For any definite allusion to Judas during the interval lying between his call and the events immediately preceding the betrayal, we are indebted to John alone. These allusions are made with the manifest purpose of showing forth the nefarious character of Judas from the beginning; and in their sequence there is a gradual development and growing clearness in the manner in which Jesus makes prophecy regarding his future betrayer. Thus, after the discourse on the Bread of Life in the synagogue of Capernaum (Jn 6:26-59), when many of the disciples deserted Jesus (Joh_6:66) and Peter protested the allegiance of the apostles (Joh_6:69), Jesus answered, “Did not I choose you the twelve, and one of you is a devil” (Joh_6:70). [“devil” in Jn.6:70, Strong’s: G1228 – διάβολος ;diabolos; dee-ab'-ol-os   From G1225; a traducer; specifically Satan (compare [H7854]): - false accuser, devil, slanderer.] Then follows John's commentary, “Now he spake of Judas the son of Simon Iscariot, for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve” (Joh_6:71), implying that Judas was already known to Jesus as being in spirit one of those who “went back, arid walked no more with him” (Joh_6:66). But the situation, however disquieting it must have been to the ambitious designs which probably actuated Judas in his acceptance of the apostleship (compare below), was not sufficiently critical to call for immediate desertion on his part. Instead, he lulled his fears of exposure by the fact that he was not mentioned by name, and continued ostensibly one of the faithful. Personal motives of a sordid nature had also influence in causing him to remain. Appointed keeper of the purse, he disregarded the warnings of Jesus concerning greed and hypocrisy (compare Mat_6:20; Luk_12:1-3) and appropriated the funds to his own use. As a cloak to his avarice, he pretended to be zealous in their administration, and therefore, at the anointing of Jesus' feet by Mary, he asked “Why was not this ointment sold for 300 shillings, and given to the poor? Now this he said, not because he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and having the bag took away what was put therein” (Joh_12:5, Joh_12:6; compare also Mat_26:7-13; Mar_14:3-8).

3. The Betrayal:
Yet, although by this craftiness Judas concealed for a time his true nature from the rest of the disciples, and fomented any discontent that might arise among them (compare Mar_14:4), he now felt that his present source of income could not long remain secure. The pregnant words of his Master regarding the day of his burial (compare Mat_26:12; Mar_14:8; Joh_12:7) revealed to His betrayer that Jesus already knew well the evil powers that were at work against Him; and it is significant that, according to Mt [Matthew] and Mk [mark], who alone of the synoptists mention the anointing, Judas departed immediately afterward and made his compact with the chief priests (compare Mat_26:14, Mat_26:15; Mar_14:10, Mar_14:11; compare also Luk_22:3-6). But his absence was only temporary. He was present at the washing of the disciples' feet, there to be differentiated once more by Jesus from the rest of the Twelve (compare “Ye are clean, but not all” and “He that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me,” Joh_13:10, Joh_13:18), but again without being named. It seemed as if Jesus wished to give Judas every opportunity, even at this late hour, of repenting and making his confession. For the last time, when they had sat down to eat, Jesus appealed him thus with the words, “One of you shall betray me” (Mat_26:21; Mar_14:18; Luk_22:21; Joh_13:21). And at the end, in answer to the anxious queries of His disciples, “Is it I?” He indicated his betrayer, not by name, but by a sign: “He it is, for whom I shall dip the sop, and give it him” (Joh_13:26). Immediately upon its reception, Judas left the supper room; the opportunity which he sought for was come (compare Joh_13:30; Mat_26:16). There is some doubt as to whether he actually received the eucharistic bread and wine previous to his departure or not, but most modern commentators hold that he did not. On his departure, Judas made his way to the high priests and their followers, and coming upon Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, he betrayed his Master with a kiss (Mat_26:47-50; Mar_14:43, Mar_14:44; Luk_22:47; Joh_18:2-5).

4. His Death:
After the betrayal, Mk, Lk and Jn are silent as regards Judas, and the accounts given in Mt and Acts of his remorse and death vary in detail. According to Mt, the actual condemnation of Jesus awakened Judas' sense of guilt, and becoming still more despondent at his repulse by the chief priests and elders, “he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.” With the money the chief priests purchased the potter's field, afterward called “the field of blood,” and in this way was fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah (Zec_11:12-14) ascribed by Matthew to Jeremiah (Mat_27:3-10). The account given in Act_1:16-20 is much shorter. It mentions neither Judas' repentance nor the chief priests, but simply states that Judas “obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out” (Act_1:18). The author of Acts finds in this the fulfillment of the prophecy in Psa_69:25. The Vulgate (Jerome's Latin Bible, 390-405 A.D.) rendering, “When he had hanged himself, he burst asunder,” suggests a means of reconciling the two accounts.
According to a legendary account mentioned by Papias, the death of Judas was due to elephantiasis (compare Hennecke, Neutestamentliche Apokryphen, 5). A so-called “Gospel of Judas” was in use among the Gnostic sect of the Cainites.

II. Character and Theories.
1. Joined the Apostles to Betray Jesus:
Much discussion and controversy have centered, not only around the discrepancies of the Gospel narratives of Judas, but also around his character and the problems connected with it. That the betrayer of Jesus should also be one of the chosen Twelve has given opportunity for the attacks of the foes of Christianity from the earliest times (compare Orig., Con. Cel., ii. 12); and the difficulty of finding any proper solution has proved so great that some have been induced to regard Judas as merely a personification of the spirit of Judaism. The acceptance of this view would, however, invalidate the historical value of much of the Scriptural writings. Other theories are put forward in explanation, namely, that Judas joined the apostolic band with the definite intention of betraying Jesus. The aim of this intention has again received two different interpretations, both of which seek to elevate the character of Judas and to free him from the charge of sordid motives and cowardly treachery. According to one, Judas was a strong patriot, who saw in Jesus the foe of his race and its ancient creed, and therefore betrayed Him in the interests of his country. This view is, however, irreconcilable with the rejection of Judas by the chief priests (compare Mat_27:3-10). According to the other, Judas regarded himself as a true servant of Christianity, who assumed the role of traitor to precipitate the action of the Messiah and induce Him to manifest His miraculous powers by calling down the angels of God from heaven to help Him (compare Mat_26:53). His suicide was further due to his disappointment at the failure of Jesus to fulfill his expectations. This theory found favor in ancient times with the Cainites (compare above), and in modern days with De Quincey and Bishop Whately. But the terms and manner of denunciation employed by Jesus in regard to Judas (compare also Joh_17:12) render this view also untenable.

2. Foreordained to Be a Traitor:
Another view is that Judas was foreordained to be the traitor: that Jesus was conscious from the first that He was to suffer death on the cross, and chose Judas because He knew that he should betray Him and thus fulfill the Divine decrees (compare Mat_26:54). Those holding this view base their arguments on the omniscience of Jesus implied in Joh_2:24, Jesus “knew all men”; Joh_6:64, “Jesus knew from the beginning who should betray him,” and Joh_18:4, “knowing all the things that were coming upon him.” Yet to take those texts literally would mean too rigid application of the doctrine of predestination. It would treat Judas as a mere instrument, as a means and not an end in the hands of a higher power: it would render meaningless the appeals and reproaches made to him by Jesus and deny any real existence of that personal responsibility and sense of guilt which it was our Lord's very purpose to awaken and stimulate in the hearts of His hearers. John himself wrote after the event, but in the words of our Lord there was, as we have seen, a growing clearness in the manner in which He foretold His betrayal. The omniscience of Jesus was greater than that of a mere clairvoyant who claimed to foretell the exact course of future events. It was the omniscience of one who knew on the one hand the ways of His Eternal Father among men, and who, on the other, penetrated into the deepest recesses of human character and beheld there all its secret feelings and motives and tendencies.

3. Betrayal the Result of Gradual Development:
Although a full discussion of the character of Judas would of necessity involve those ultimate problems of Free Will and Original Sin (Westcott) which no theology can adequately solve, theory which regards the betrayal as the result of a gradual development within the soul of Judas seems the most practical. It is significant that Judas alone among the disciples was of southern extraction; and the differences in temperament and social outlook, together with the petty prejudices to which these generally give rise, may explain in part, though they do not justify, his after treachery - that lack of inner sympathy which existed between Judas and the rest of the apostles. He undoubtedly possessed certain business ability, and was therefore appointed keeper of the purse. But his heart could not have been clean, even from the first, as he administered even his primary charge dishonestly. The cancer of this greed spread from the material to the spiritual. To none of the disciples did the fading of the dream of an earthly kingdom of pomp and glory bring greater disappointment than to Judas. The cords of love by which Jesus gradually drew the hearts of the other disciples to Himself, the teaching by which He uplifted their souls above all earthly things, were as chafing bonds to the selfishness of Judas. And from his fettered greed and disappointed ambition sprang jealousy and spite and hatred. It was the hatred, not of a strong, but of an essentially weak man. Instead of making an open breach with his Lord, he remained ostensibly one of His followers: and this continued contact with a goodness to which he would not yield (compare Swete on Mar_14:10), and his brooding over the rebukes of his Master, gave ready entrance for “Satan into his soul.” But if he “knew the good and did not do it” (compare Joh_13:17), so also he was weak in the carrying out of his nefarious designs. It was this hesitancy, rather than a fiendish cunning, which induced him to remain till the last moment in the supper room, and which prompted the remark of Jesus “What thou doest, do quickly” (Joh_13:27). Of piece with this weak-mindedness was his attempt to cast the blame upon the chief priests and elders (compare Mat_27:3, Mat_27:4). He sought to set himself right, not with the innocent Jesus whom he had betrayed, but with the accomplices in his crime; and because that world which his selfishness had made his god failed him at the last, he went and hanged himself. It was the tragic end of one who espoused a great cause in the spirit of speculation and selfish ambition, and who weighed not the dread consequences to which those impure motives might lead him (compare also Bruce, Training of the Twelve; Latham, Pastor Pastorum; Stalker, Trial and Death of Jesus Christ).

Whew, now that we’ve read and considered the ISBE Judas Iscariot summary, read and considered the given Bible references, what can I/we conclude as the answer to Jacque’s question? For me to be certain with answer for Jacque has not happened. Am I being illusive? No, it’s presently beyond my insight. Does the ISBE summary benefit us? It should definitely do so as a reminder of the cost and agony of betrayal after the fact.

SATAN & COMPANY

SATAN & COMPANY
Wednesday, March 21, 2017

1Timothy 4:7 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
2Timothy 2:15-17a Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. And their word will eat as doth a canker:
2Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
Titus 1:14-15 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
2Peter 1:16  For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

A student of God’s Word, also a DT reader, asked about Satan. In the brief interchange that followed we decided a series on the topic would be even better. Why?
There is considerable, myth, fable, fiction, art, cinema, family or denominational lore, misconception, and for some abject ignorance on the subject of Satan & Company, company including other fallen angels, demons, Satanists, plus propagandists deliberate and unintentional.
Yesterday I invested much of the day putting together SATANFile. 68 pages, nearly 50,000 words of or based in the Word of God. I suspect that reading this statistic some of you may already be feeling faint. Fear not, having in the past received complaints on too much coal train like car after car hauling the same topic, I’ve decided to intersperse the material and essays over a period of time. For those that are held by myth and fable it should give them time to ponder and digest the Biblical truth about Satan & Company. Let us begin with a question.
  Why about Satan & Company?
·         Freedom. Jesus explained that the truth will make us free.  The flip side of this fact is that not knowing and embracing the truth will restrict us. “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (Jn.8:31-32)
·         Recognition. Satan is the utmost cunning deceiver. We must not carelessly minimize and thereby aid and abet him. “Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman,… “ (Gen.3)
·         Susceptibility. Because false beliefs lead to vulnerability and propensity to ungodliness.
·         Accountability. To understand and accept our personal responsibility for cause and effects as opposed to simply blaming Satan or others. “’The LORD God called to the man and asked him, "Where are you?" He answered, "I heard you in the garden. I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid." God asked, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from the tree I commanded you not to eat from?" The man answered, "That woman, the one you gave me, gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it." Then the LORD God asked the woman, "What have you done?" "The snake deceived me, and I ate," the woman answered.’“ (GW Gen.3:9-13)  “If we say, "We have a relationship with God" and yet live in the dark, we're lying. We aren't being truthful. But if we live in the light in the same way that God is in the light, we have a relationship with each other. And the blood of his Son Jesus cleanses us from every sin. If we say, "We aren't sinful" we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (GW 1Jn.1:6-8)
·         Relationship. 1John 1:7
·         Shame. “Do your best to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker who isn't ashamed to teach the word of truth correctly.“ (GW 2Tim.2:15)
·         To please God. “Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God's compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. Don't become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants-what is good, pleasing, and perfect.“ (GW Rom.12:1-2)
·         Love. John 3:16. 1Corinthians 13.
·         Mature service. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. When I became an adult, I no longer used childish ways.” (GW 1Cor.13:11) “By now you should be teachers. Instead, you still need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word. You need milk, not solid food. All those who live on milk lack the experience to talk about what is right. They are still babies. However, solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to know the difference between good and evil.” (GW Heb.5:12-14)
·         Ambassadorship. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God….“ (2Cor.5:14-21)
All of the above is considerable to digest. And I’m sure there is more some could add having to do with authority, empowerment, etc. But enough for this day I think. Unless of course you have questions or challenges.

FAITH

FAITH
Tuesday, March 21, 2017

Habbakuk 2:4 Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
John 1:1-4, 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. … And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. [Also note Gen.1:1, 26 “let us”; Col.1:15-17]
Romans 5:1-2 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Every person, past, present, and future lives by faith: faith in self, person, people, ideology, things.
I live by faith in the Word, God Incarnate, Lord Jesus Christ, and His word passed on to man, the Bible.
·         God Incarnate, the Word, Jesus (Jn.1:1, 14), stated quite clearly that His word is paramount, and will not diminish or pass away. “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.“ (Mk.13:31)
·         Paul stated to Timothy, “… from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.“ (2Tim.3:15-16)
·         Peter affirmed “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.  “ (1Pet.1:23-25)
·          John, in his epistle, repeated that which he affirmed in John chapter 1, “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. … Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.“ (1Jn.2:5; 5:5-13)
If you are not already doing so, I pray that too will decide to live by faith in Jesus and His word.

BEING THANKFUL FOR UNFAIR GOD

BEING THANKFUL FOR UNFAIR GOD
Monday, March 20, 2017

Matthew [GW] 20:1-16  "The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at daybreak to hire workers for his vineyard. After agreeing to pay the workers the usual day's wages, he sent them to work in his vineyard. About 9 a.m. he saw others standing in the marketplace without work. He said to them, 'Work in my vineyard, and I'll give you whatever is right.' So they went. "He went out again about noon and 3 p.m. and did the same thing. About 5 p.m. he went out and found some others standing around. He said to them, 'Why are you standing here all day long without work?' "'No one has hired us,' they answered him. "He said to them, 'Work in my vineyard.' "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard told the supervisor, 'Call the workers, and give them their wages. Start with the last, and end with the first.' "Those who started working about 5 p.m. came, and each received a day's wages. When those who had been hired first came, they expected to receive more. But each of them received a day's wages. Although they took it, they began to protest to the owner. They said, 'These last workers have worked only one hour. Yet, you've treated us all the same, even though we worked hard all day under a blazing sun.' "The owner said to one of them, 'Friend, I'm not treating you unfairly. Didn't you agree with me on a day's wages? Take your money and go! I want to give this last worker as much as I gave you. Can't I do what I want with my own money? Or do you resent my generosity towards others?' "In this way the last will be first, and the first will be last."
Luke 15 … I can guarantee that God's angels are happy about one person who turns to God and changes the way he thinks and acts." Then Jesus said, "A man had two sons. …
Luke 23:39-43 One of the criminals hanging there insulted Jesus by saying, "So you're really the Messiah, are you? Well, save yourself and us!" But the other criminal scolded him: "Don't you fear God at all? Can't you see that you're condemned in the same way that he is? Our punishment is fair. We're getting what we deserve. But this man hasn't done anything wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom." Jesus said to him, "I can guarantee this truth: Today you will be with me in paradise."

God is not fair, and I am so very glad for it! For if God was fair I would get justice: Precisely what was/is deserved at all times. Jesus pointed out this wonderful truth about our perfect Father: God being gracious and forgiving as opposed to our concepts of rigid fairness.
Thoughtfully considering God’s Word I see that for me to expect life to be totally fair is immature, unrealistic, and especially ungodly. This admittedly is a Biblical precept conflicting with human concept. It is definitely difficult to wrap one’s mind around, and may be even harder to accept and to personally manifest in our present journey among others.
Consider the Matthew 20 vineyard account.
Then there’s Luke 15:11-32. We like to favor the central character as “The Prodigal Son”, but actually the main person is the gracious Father. Identifying with the wayward child, a story we love to accept, unless of course we are of the mindset of the Pharisees and scribes (vs.2) . . . or the dependable responsibly living elder son (vs.28-30) with infantile view of the father’s way.
Then let us not forget the totally unworthy person at Calvary.
I much prefer God’s unfair treatment; living under His love, grace and mercy. How about you?

KARMA?

KARMA?
Sunday, March 19, 2017

As a follower of Jesus Christ I do not use certain terms as they are not or even anti Christian, contrary to the Word of God. “karma” is one. The following essay from GotQuestion.org explains the why-not.
EBB4
+++++++

Question: "What does the Bible say about karma?"

Answer:
Karma is a theological concept found in the Buddhist and Hindu religions. It is the idea that how you live your life will determine the quality of life you will have after reincarnation. If you are unselfish, kind, and holy during this lifetime, you will be rewarded by being reincarnated (reborn into a new earthly body) into a pleasant life. However, if you live a life of selfishness and evil, you will be reincarnated into a less-than-pleasant lifestyle. In other words, you reap in the next life what you sow in this one. Karma is based on the theological belief in reincarnation. The Bible rejects the idea of reincarnation; therefore, it does not support the idea of karma.
Hebrews 9:27 states, “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment…” This Bible verse makes clear two important points which, for Christians, negate the possibility of reincarnation and karma. First, it states that we are “destined to die once,” meaning that humans are only born once and only die once. There is no endless cycle of life and death and rebirth, an idea inherent in the reincarnation theory. Second, it states that after death we face judgment, meaning that there is no second chance, like there is in reincarnation and karma, to live a better life. You get one shot at life and living it according to God’s plan, and that is it.
The Bible talks a lot about reaping and sowing. Job 4:8 says, “As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.” Psalm 126:5 says, “Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.” Luke 12:24 says, “Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!” In each of these instances, as well as all the other references to reaping and sowing, the act of receiving the rewards of your actions takes place in this life, not in some future life. It is a present-day activity, and the references make it clear that the fruit you reap will be commensurate with the actions you have performed. In addition, the sowing you perform in this life will affect your reward or punishment in the afterlife.
This afterlife is not a rebirth or a reincarnation into another body here on earth. It is either eternal suffering in hell (Matthew 25:46) or eternal life in heaven with Jesus, who died so that we might live eternally with Him. This should be the focus of our life on earth. The apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 6:8-9, “The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Finally, we must always remember that it was Jesus whose death on the cross resulted in the reaping of eternal life for us, and that it is faith in Jesus that gives us this eternal life. Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Therefore, we see that the concept of reincarnation and karma is incompatible with what the Bible teaches about life, death, and the sowing and reaping of eternal life.

JESUS' PERSONA

JESUS’ PERSONA
Friday, March 17, 2017

John [GW] 1:1-4, 14 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was already with God in the beginning. Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him. He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity. … The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness and truth.
1John 1:1-2 The Word of life existed from the beginning. We have heard it. We have seen it. We observed and touched it. This life was revealed to us. We have seen it, and we testify about it. We are reporting to you about this eternal life that was in the presence of the Father and was revealed to us.

I have not risen above the need to be taught, reminded, and provoked. I hope I never again think I have. I know I must constantly exercise in this area. Most often I do so alone, sometimes by God’s intrusions, sometimes by recruiting an exercise partner regardless of their age or level of knowledge.  In recruitment one of my favorite methods is inviting “Tell me something you think I need to know.” The invitee may answer immediately, sometimes blurting, other times responding later after more thought. (I am currently looking forward to response from a high school young lady.)
Today, using a pointed topical question, I invite you to teach, remind, even provoke me if it pleases you to do so.
Jesus was God Incarnate. He dwelled among us humanly for over 30 years. As The Incarnate One Jesus had human personality reflected in His behavior.
The question: Beyond His sacrificial death, what aspects of His humanity, personality, do you appreciate most of all?

ABIDING IN AS OPPOSED TO DECIDING FOR STRENGTH

ABIDING IN AS OPPOSED TO DECIDING FOR STRENGTH
Thursday, March 16, 2017

Joshua 24:14-15 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Hebrews chapter 11 [Hall of faith.] … These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. [verse 13]

The Boy Scouts of America didn’t come up with the important principle of whenever possible “Be Prepared” before time of need. Nor did my family prior to my joining the Scouts. Neither did their ancestors. Not even my Uncle Gordon Bevans that taught me much, including, “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.”
  The Word Everlasting did. (Jn.1:1)
Unfortunately there are Christians that live unprepared. They’re not exercising in God’s Way and when stress comes they are as easily shaken as leaves in the wind. Early in His ministry on earth Jesus referred to this very thing. Our prime example is Lord Jesus Christ; the Word (Jn.1:1); the Way (Jn.14:6-12). He established early on in His Incarnate ministry that He is Strength . . . asking the crowd what they expected to see, a reed trembling in a breeze? (Mt.11:7)
I read of this strength in characters in Scripture, especially the list in Hebrews 11. (And they didn’t have or understand all that we now do.)  I observe this strength in people I know, and have known, my beloved Ann for one.
I well remember the day we were informed Ann had a fatal incurable disease that is so rare the health industry invests little or no money toward its prevention or cure. Of course I didn’t like the news, but I well remember Ann’s lifelong overarching attitude: We know we die, the difference being having advance notice, and though she loved family and friend, she had always looked forward to what she referred to as “The ultimate healing.” And so we observed her life prior to and during those last months and final days: Her only change was in body.
There is much in the Word exemplified and written to prepare us with daily and advance strength.
Though there is many more, I here mention two large, one for now and one for eventually leaving this world.
·         2Timothy [GW] 3:16-17 [Paul explained] “Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God's approval. They equip God's servants so that they are completely prepared to do good things.”
·         John [GW] 14:1-2 [Jesus said]"Don't be troubled. Believe in God, and believe in me. My Father's house has many rooms. If that were not true, would I have told you that I'm going to prepare a place for you?”
Don’t wait for the gales of life or the winds of death, abide, be prepared!

SELECTIVITY

SELECTIVITY
Wednesday, March 15, 2017

Philippians 1:27-30 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.

We, one and all, by God’s gift of free will, and the misbegotten exercise thereof at Eden, both enjoy and put up with our resultant conflicting nature; it being selective. This is not narrowly externally observed on my part. In reflecting on my exercise thereof, I too often see selectivity leaning toward preservation of comfort.
I delight in Almighty Jehovah’s gifts beginning with trusting His Son, Jesus Christ, for His blessed saving redemption. His redemption centered in but not at all limited to the blessed assurance of being heaven-bound (Not as in eventual, but bound!); directive guidance, inner peace, confidence, lifelong purpose, to name a few.
The gift that I do not prefer is summed up in Philippians 1:29. Suffering for His sake is also a gift from the father: (ISV) “For you have been given the privilege for the Messiah's sake not only to believe in him but also to suffer for him.”
