LEAVING APPALACHIA

LEAVING APPALACHIA
Sunday, April 30, 2017

John 5:1-12  After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: …

How often is a question asked and in doing so reveals our attitude of healthiness, or not?
Bethesda is far away in time and geography. So what does reading Jesus healing there so many years ago have to do with you and me here and now? The answer depends on whether we simply read it as distant in time and space, or study, contemplate, and apply to our present circumstances on a regular basis. Some thoughts I’ve had about the Bethesda account that are beneficial when accepted and applied:
·         There is vast gulf between not wanting to be sick or die and wanting to be whole.
·         Being whole goes far beyond the physical. It includes the challenges of carrying responsibilities beyond “the bed”.
·         It doesn’t take being face to face with the jaws of a shark for life to be frightening.
·         Knowing what up and about wholeness entails, even may demand, we may opt to remain abed.
Appalachia is beautiful country. I’ve enjoyed many areas of it with family, friends, and strangers. Friend Mike was born and raised in on the Ohio side of the river not far from Wheeling, West Virginia. The village of Mount Pleasant is quaint, noted for the largest Quaker meeting house in the USA, and being a very active underground railway station.
But as far as employment and wages, Mike those many decades ago decided for opportunities elsewhere. As a young man he joined the army and served over 25 years, even holding an important position at West Point for a period of time. He and his dear wife returned home in retirement. Mike working at a supermarket down the mountains and Pam vigorously employed in the classroom media department at the University of Ohio.
Mike encountered numerous young people bemoaning their status. They wanted more, a life with better opportunities. But when Mike advised that the answer is to leave, even joining the military, they were not interested in rising up and walking.
I continue to wonder if Jesus asked others lying by the pool? Didn’t others hear His words to the man? But then that was there, whereas we hear His words here and now.

EVIDENCES OF PRIDE

EVIDENCES OF PRIDE
(Monday, January 18, 2010)

1Peter GW 3:8 Finally, everyone must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love each other, have compassion, and be humble.

As stated earlier, when it come to pride versus humility, there is no neutral ground.
As with all characteristics favorably beneficial or otherwise detrimental, there are evidences, some very obvious, others not so; pride quite easily recognized in others; while comparatively the most difficult evidences to see are personally.
Here is a checklist I compiled to assist in the revelation in the recognizing our pride:
1.     Passing judgment on, complaining against God. Num.14:1-11; Rom.9:20.
2.     A general lack of gratitude and thankfulness. 2Chron.32:25.
3.     Anger, ever-present “my rights”. Mt.20:1-16.
4.     Intolerant, easily disgusted. Lk.7:36-50.
5.     Inflated view of importance, intelligence, gifts, abilities, talents. 1Cor.4:7.
6.     Focusing on # 5. list of lacks. 1Cor.12:14-25.
7.     Driven in perfectionism and expecting it in others. Mt.23:24-28.
8.     Vociferous loose lips. Pr.10:19.
9.     Boastfulness. Pr.27:2; Gal.6:3.
10.  Difficulty in working or serving under authority; wanting to control. 1Cor.1:10-13; Eph.5:21.
11.  Disproportionately concerned or regulated by other’s opinions of you, resulting in man-pleasing instead of God-pleasing manner. Gal.1:10. (There’s also the contrary side of this pridefulness; not giving a hoot about manner and reputation.)
12.  Ravaged and riled by advice or criticism. Pr.13:1.
13.  Unteachable. Pr.19:20; Jn.9:13-14.
14.  Sarcastic and demeaning toward people. Pr.12:18, 23.
15.  No recognition = no service. Gal.5:13; Eph.2:10.
16.  Without concern for others. Mt.5:7; 18:23-35.
17.  Defensiveness and blame-shifting. Gen.3:12-13; Pr.12:1.
18.  Self-excusing or half-heartedly apologetic. Pr.10:17.
19.  Prayers centered in self, not others, not God. Lk.18:10-14.
20.  Disrespectful. 1Pet.2:13-17.
21.  Untimely or inconsiderate opining. Phil.2:1-4.
22.  Not asking forgiveness of God or man. Mt.5:23-24.
23.  Underrating sins and limitations. Mt.7:3-5.
24.  Maximizing others’ sins and limitations. Mt.7:3-5; Lk.18:9-14.
25.  Irritable and impatient with others or even self. Eph.4:31-32.
26.  Jealous and envious. 1Cor.13:4.
27.  Using others for self-interest or gain. Mt.7:12; Phil.2:3-4.
28.  Deceitful, secretive. Pr.11:3; 28:13.
29.  Fishing for compliments and attention. 1Pet.3:3-4.
30.  Abstaining from close relationships. Pr.18:1-2; Heb.10:24-25.
Additionally: another mark of pride versus humility is not wanting to examine self using a checklist such as this one.
After editing and setting aside the above to ponder a bit more, an afterthought: Hours after completing EVIDENCES OF PRIDE, the absolute incongruity of pride’s manners struck me. Living in and by pride we may all at the same time despise authority while being a man-pleaser while bragging of sinful exploits while deceitfully hiding or denying others while fishing for recognition while apologetic about accomplishment while ___________. O’ but how sinful we are!

RISK ASSESSMENT

RISK ASSESSMENT
Thursday, April 27, 2017

Proverbs 9:10-12 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

From Adam Clarke’s Commentary on Pr.9:11 - Vice shortens human life, by a necessity of consequence: and by the same, righteousness lengthens it. There is a long addition here in the Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate: “He who trusts in falsity feeds on the winds; and is like him who chases the fowls of heaven. He forsakes the way of his own vineyard, and errs from the paths of his own inheritance. He enters also into lonely and desert places, and into a land abandoned to thirst; and his hands collect that which yieldeth no fruit.”

Do we fear death by sharks when cows and bulls kill more people than those gray finned swimmers? (I personally have been attacked and injured by horn, but though an ocean swimmer, never by teeth.)
Cow/shark example is not common to most but here’s one I suspect is: Are you or I more likely to be killed or maimed by a terrorist or a fellow citizen? Which do people in your listening, including politicians and newscasters, ballyhoo the most? But what are the actual facts?
Everybody does it with varying time invested and level of intensity. Some do so stoically in formal manner, corporations being the main objective practitioners of this type. Then there are those that do so subjectively with angst. Among this latter group are those dominated by hyper-emotional risk assessment. Group membership varies from time to time. Then there are those enjoying “the peace that passeth all understanding”. I’ve been a member of every group at one time or another.
Risk assessment can observably strengthen, weaken, or destroy corporation and/or individual.
I encourage sensible risk assessment in all areas of life, spiritually foremost.
Fact: USA road carnage involves a death every 14 minutes, and injury serious enough to require medical attention every 7 seconds. “Put another way, one year of dead and injured on the road represents a casualty count greater than the combined American dead and wounded from every war we’ve ever fought. Driving is our most dangerous battlefield.” (Consumer Reports, October 2016) And this week I read other statistics revealing “distracted drivers” are now a leading contributor to highway and street bloodshed.
Then there is the spiritually foremost facts explained in God’s Word. One in particular that motivationally came to mind this morning “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews chapter 10)

SUNDAY SCHOOL AFTERTHOUGHTS

SUNDAY SCHOOL AFTERTHOUGHTS
Wednesday, April 26, 2017

Anyone that knows me very well knows that Romans 12:1-3 is a major motivational passage in my life, with the desire to please God and aid my fellow man whether follower of Christ, Jesus fan, or unbeliever. I am highly aware that my thoughts should lead me to use good judgment based on what God has given me as a believer; personalizing 12:3b is essential to my plan to serve Him all my days.
One of the ways I work at His glad service is I participate in an adult Sunday School class. I value the experience together. But for my heart and mind the session doesn’t end when classmates rise and move to the intermission before congregational gathering. I continue to ponder the chosen text and comments in our very conversational group.
This week it was the first part of 2Peter. Thoughts on came and went while reading the OW-H including the obituaries, doing laundry, planting cabbages and kale, watering indoor plants, noshing, reading magazines et al . . . and again during this morning waking moments.
I often think in questions. Not questions involving doubts, but questions seeking increase in knowledge so as to refine me for service. The apostle Peter contributes to my ongoing goal as I examine the meanings of his words.
I begin by noting Peter is writing to believers but remind myself that God’s Word may be beneficial to nonbelievers; the societal application of the 10 Commandments being a prime example.
In verse 5 I note that I’m to add knowledge to virtue. I thought knowledge was before virtue? Using study tools at hand I see the Greek for virtue involves manliness. (I pause here to remind modern women that the Bible, as with most literature, was written in the masculine gender. So, unless specifically targeting males, God’s Word, as is the case here, apples to both sexes.)
  Manliness is?
Thinking about it, especially in the light of Romans 12:1-3 and related Scripture word and examples, I understand it’s being a consistent responsible person in integrity before God and man. Armed with this knowledge I understand that adding knowledge increases and builds integrity. I read on and continue ponderance.
Completing this morning consideration of the process list I realize that if and as applied I will increasingly partake of the divine John 1:12 power God has given unto me of all things that pertain unto life and godliness and these things being in me will abound and then I shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1:4, 8)

CAREERING ALONG

CAREERING ALONG
Tuesday, April 25, 2017

Like “bear”, “careering” is another one of those odd words in our language.
Bear having to do with burdening, including stress, someone easily annoyed, meriting further investigation, a Wall Street condition, resemblance to, production including childbirth, holding a particular thought, transport or transmission, plus indicating a furry animal that we may cuddle or it may cuddle us.
Not so humorously illustrated by “As I did bear my heavy backpack, a humongous bear attacked me. After a long stay in hospital and rehab, family and friends told me I did bear the stress like a champion as I do not bear ill will toward that bear. They’re surprised I’m not acting like a grouchy bear which they consider remarkable as I went hiking to escape the stress of the present bear market. Also, do you think I should I bear the news to everyone that the ranger told me that the bear incident does bear further investigation?”
“Careering” in its peculiarity means long-term or lifetime occupation, professional progress, can also have to do with “piece of legislation whose career is rich with conflicting amendments”. It also can mean rapid lurching or swaying, plus can be inherently performing immoral and/or illegal acts. Intriguingly, for some people it could mean all definitions at the same time.
How did I awake with this line of thought? My often salad-bowl synapse activity? Is it connected to the plaque (another multi-definition word) I was awarded for my bent at segueing?
Or has it something to do with my normal revving early morning mind recalling: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. (1Jn.2:15-17)
And this is where my awakening thoughts abruptly ended, leaving me staring at this screen. Could this mean that you are to, in Christian career, are to bear further excavation (another funny word) and transmission with me?
Must be, for as a delver my rummaging has presently momentarily expired.
EBB4 (Originally written 6/4/10. In spite of heart stoppage and strokes since then, manner of minding is unaltered.)

THE DICHOTOMY OF JESUS?

THE DICHOTOMY OF JESUS?
Monday, April 24, 2017

John [ESV] 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John [GW] 17 … “But now, Father, I'm coming back to you. I say these things while I'm still in the world so that they will have the same joy that I have. I have given them your message. But the world has hated them because they don't belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. I'm not asking you to take them out of the world but to protect them from the evil one. They don't belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. "Use the truth to make them holy. Your words are truth. …
2Timothy [GW] 3:16-17 Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God's approval.
They equip God's servants so that they are completely prepared to do good things.

Recently I was in a Bible study where pastor ventured the discussion question of Jesus being 100% man and 100% God; How could this be so? Do any of you have a problem with this?  “Ed, do you?” Some participants expressed perplexity, difficulty in understanding the actually of Jesus’ being God and man. (From past decades discussions heard: As opposed to Jesus as Godly man or manly God.)
  I do not. Why not?
First of all please know that I am not laying claim to understanding and fully comprehending God’s Truth. I am not knowledgeably co-equal with God. I do however have His Word at hand and within sight.
54 years ago Bud Bond reached out to me in God’s love. After 6 weeks of lunchtime and break discussions I told him I was not convinced. In response Bud asked me why. I told him “I do not accept your assertion that the Bible is the word of God.” The next evening he handed me a copy of TEN REASONS WHY I BELIEVE THE BIBLE IS THE WORD OF GOD, by William W. Orr AB, MA, ThB, DD.  Written in the style of Cliff’s Notes it presented 1.) It’s Reasonable, 2.) It’s Amazing Composition, 3.) It’s Unique Completeness, 4.) It’s Unparalleled Teachings, 5.) It’s Perennial Appeal, 6.) It’s Scientific Accuracy, 7.) It’s Fulfilled Prophecy, 8.) It’s Miraculous Preservation, 9.) It’s Transforming Power, 10.) It’s Christfulness.
Already having been under Holy Spirit conviction for nearly 2 months, I then knew I was at the point of deciding about a book that I had read from age 9 on . . . I knew I had been disagreeing with and rejecting God’s truth; the Word living, Jesus, and written, the Bible.
Driving home after midnight shift change I trusted the Word and changed from that moment forth. This includes believing God created Adam, then Eve, the reality of The Flood, dividing the Red Sea and the many other remarkable things stated in God’s Word and Incarnate God’s recorded words and miracles, His death burial, and resurrection . . . and that I cannot dichotomize Incarnate God’s wholeness. If I were to do so how now could I not doubt all else God says in His Word? (2Tim.3:16; Heb.1:1-14; 2:1-4)

THE PARABLE OF SHOES

1John 2:15-17 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

Gertrude and Norman attended the same high school as Sabrina. But they were drastically different in culture and were deemed so by Sabrina’s “My people.” Sabrina and her people were the epitome of fun and fashion. They cruelly labeled Gertrude the Geek and Norman the Nerd.
Though close intellectual pal with Gertrude, Norman longed for Sabrina. He dreamed of someday marrying her and being happy ever after. This was not what happened. Sabrina married the captain of their school football team.
Norman and Gertrude graduated with high honors, and after completing college soon decided “Hey, why not continue our closeness in marriage.” It wasn’t long before their home included 3 cerebral analytical children. All went well, organized, high bracket earnings, mortgage soon paid off et al. Nice.
Sabrina and Jack never got over high school. Party and vacation were two top words in their vocabulary, which of course included “worrisome debt”.
Norman saw Sabrina at the supermarket one day staring at a head of lettuce and his old sappy teen feelings for her surged. Though he didn’t acknowledge his presence, Norman developed the habit of driving by her house on the way to and from his business. His constant brain refrain being “I wish I was in Jack’s shoes!”
Though warned about the effect of his affection for booze, Jack ceased not. Though only 35, he died.
Reading Jack’s obituary Norman formulated a plan. First he espied Sabrina’s routines. Then he timed happenchance encounters while meanwhile eroding his marriage. Then there was that first cup of coffee carefully followed by using his wealth to wine, dine, clad, and transport Sabrina. Then he informed weary Gertrude that he was having an affair and didn’t love her any more. He quickly had his lawyer, a groupie lower classman from high school, draw up a lucrative divorce agreement that Gertrude readily agreed to.
Sabrina readily agreed to marry Norman. He spent freely setting up a palatial lifestyle.
After a few months Norman began driving by the cemetery morning and evening, repeating his “I wish I was in Jack’s shoes!”

Satan
sā´tan (שׂטן, sāṭān), “adversary,” from the verb שׂטן, sāṭan, “to lie in wait” (as adversary); Σατᾶν, Satán, Σατανᾶς, Satanás, “adversary,” διάβολος, diábolos, “Devil,” “adversary” or “accuser,” κατήγωρ, katḗgōr (altogether unclassical and unGreek) (used once in Rev_12:10), “accuser”):

LITERATURE
I. Definition.
A created but superhuman, personal, evil, world-power, represented in Scripture as the adversary both of God and men.
II. Scriptural Facts Concerning Satan.
1. Names of Satan:
The most important of these are the Hebrew and Greek equivalents noticed above. These words are used in the general sense justified by their etymological significance. It is applied even to Yahweh Himself (Num_22:22, Num_22:32; compare 1Sa_29:4; 2Sa_19:22; Psa_109:6, etc.). The word “Satan” is used 24 times in the Old Testament. In Job (Job_1:6 f) and Zec (Job_3:1 f) it has the prefixed definite article. In all cases but one when the article is omitted it is used in a general sense. This one exception is 1Ch_21:1 (compare 2Sa_24:1), where the word is generally conceded to be used as a proper name. This meaning is fixed in New Testament times. We are thus enabled to note in the term “Satan” (and Devil) the growth of a word from a general term to an appellation and later to a proper name. All the other names of Satan save only these two are descriptive titles. In addition to these two principal names a number of others deserve specific enumeration. Tempter (Mat_4:5; 1Th_3:5); Beelzebub (Mat_12:24); Enemy (Mat_13:39); Evil One (Mat_13:19, Mat_13:38; 1Jo_2:13, 1Jo_2:14; 1Jo_3:12, and particularly 1Jo_5:18); Belial (2Co_6:15); Adversary (ἀντίδικος, antı́dikos), (1Pe_5:8); Deceiver (literally “the one who deceives”) (Rev_12:9); Dragon (Great) (Rev_12:3); Father of Lies (Joh_8:44); Murderer (Joh_8:44); Sinner (1Jo_3:8) - these are isolated references occurring from 1 to 3 times each. In the vast majority of passages (70 out of 83) either Satan or Devil is used.

2. Character of Satan:
Satan is consistently represented in the New Testament as the enemy both of God and man. The popular notion is that Satan is the enemy of man and active in misleading and cursing humanity because of his intense hatred and opposition to God. Mat_13:39 would seem to point in this direction, but if one were to venture an opinion in a region where there are not enough facts to warrant a conviction, it would be that the general tenor of Scripture indicates quite the contrary, namely, that Satan's jealousy and hatred of men has led him into antagonism to God and, consequently, to goodness. The fundamental moral description of Satan is given by our Lord when He describes Satan as the “evil one” (Mat_13:19, Mat_13:38; compare Isaiah's description of Yahweh as the “Holy One,” Isa_1:4 and often); that is, the one whose nature and will are given to evil. Moral evil is his controlling attribute. It is evident that this description could not be applied to Satan as originally created. Ethical evil cannot be concreated. It is the creation of each free will for itself. We are not told in definite terms how Satan became the evil one, but certainly it could be by no other process than a fall, whereby, in the mystery of free personality, an evil will takes the place of a good one.

3. Works of Satan:
The world-wide and age-long works of Satan are to be traced to one predominant motive. He hates both God and man and does all that in him lies to defeat God's plan of grace and to establish and maintain a kingdom of evil, in the seduction and ruin of mankind. The balance and sanity of the Bible is nowhere more strikingly exhibited than in its treatment of the work of Satan. Not only is the Bible entirely free from the extravagances of popular Satanology, which is full of absurd stories concerning the appearances, tricks, and transformations of Satan among men, but it exhibits a dependable accuracy and consistency, of statement which is most reassuring. Almost nothing is said concerning Satanic agency other than wicked men who mislead other men. In the controversy with His opponents concerning exorcism (Mar_3:22 f and parallel's) our Lord rebuts their slanderous assertion that He is in league with Satan by the simple proposition that Satan does not work against himself. But in so saying He does far more than refute this slander. He definitely aligns the Bible against the popular idea that a man may make a definite and conscious personal alliance with Satan for any purpose whatever. The agent of Satan is always a victim. Also the hint contained in this discussion that Satan has a kingdom, together with a few other not very definite allusions, are all that we have to go upon in this direction. Nor are we taught anywhere that Satan is able to any extent to introduce disorder into the physical universe or directly operate in the lives of men. It is true that in Luk_13:16 our Lord speaks of the woman who was bowed over as one “whom Satan has bound, lo, these eighteen years,” and that in 2Co_12:7 Paul speaks of his infirmity as a “messenger of Satan sent to buffet him.” Paul also speaks (1Th_2:18) of Satan's hindering him from visiting the church at Thessalonica. A careful study of these related passages (together with the prologue of Job) will reveal the fact that Satan's direct agency in the physical world is very limited. Satan may be said to be implicated in all the disasters and woes of human life, in so far as they are more or less directly contingent upon sin (see particularly Heb_2:14) On the contrary, it is perfectly evident that Satan's power consists principally in his ability to deceive. It is interesting and characteristic that according to the Bible Satan is fundamentally a liar and his kingdom is a kingdom founded upon lies and deceit. The doctrine of Satan therefore corresponds in every important particular to the general Biblical emphasis upon truth. “The truth shall make you free” (Joh_8:32) - this is the way of deliverance from the power of Satan.
Now it would seem that to make Satan pre-eminently the deceiver would make man an innocent victim and thus relax the moral issue. But according to the Bible man is particeps criminis in the process of his own deception. He is deceived only because he ceases to love the truth and comes first to love and then to believe a lie (2Co_1:10). This really goes to the very bottom of the problem of temptation. Men are not tempted by evil, per se, but by a good which can be obtained only at the cost of doing wrong. The whole power of sin, at least in its beginnings, consists in the sway of the fundamental falsehood that any good is really attainable by wrongdoing. Since temptation consists in this attack upon the moral sense, man is constitutionally guarded against deceit, and is morally culpable in allowing himself to be deceived. The temptation of our Lord Himself throws the clearest possible light upon the methods ascribed to Satan and The temptation was addressed to Christ's consciousness of divine sonship; it was a deceitful attack emphasizing the good, minimizing or covering up the evil; indeed, twisting evil into good. It was a deliberate, malignant attempt to obscure the truth and induce to evil through the acceptance of falsehood. The attack broke against a loyalty to truth which made self-deceit, and consequently deceit from without, impossible. The lie was punctured by the truth and the temptation lost its power (see TEMPTATION OF CHRIST). This incident reveals one of the methods of Satan - by immediate suggestion as in the case of Judas (Luk_22:3; Joh_13:2, Joh_13:27). Sometimes, however, and, perhaps, most frequently, Satan's devices (2Co_2:11) include human agents. Those who are given over to evil and who persuade others to evil are children and servants of Satan (See Mat_16:23; Mar_8:33; Luk_4:8; Joh_6:70; Joh_8:44; Act_13:10; 1Jo_3:8). Satan also works through persons and institutions supposed to be on the side of right but really evil. Here the same ever-present and active falseness and deceit are exhibited. When he is called “the god of this world” (2Co_4:4) it would seem to be intimated that he has the power to clothe himself in apparently divine attributes. He also makes himself an angel of light by presenting advocates of falsehood in the guise of apostles of truth (2Co_11:13, 2Co_11:15; 1Jo_4:1; 2Th_2:9; Rev_12:9; Rev_19:20). In the combination of passages here brought together, it is clearly indicated that Satan is the instigator and fomenter of that spirit of lawlessness which exhibits itself as hatred both of truth and right, and which has operated so widely and so disastrously in human life.

4. History of Satan:
The history of Satan, including that phase of it which remains to be realized, can be set forth only along the most general lines. He belongs to the angelic order of beings. He is by nature one of the sons of Elohı̄m (Job_1:6). He has fallen, and by virtue of his personal forcefulness has become the leader of the anarchic forces of wickedness. As a free being he has merged his life in evil and has become altogether and hopelessly evil. As a being of high intelligence he has gained great power and has exercised a wide sway over other beings. As a created being the utmost range of his power lies within the compass of that which is permitted. It is, therefore, hedged in by the providential government of God and essentially limited. The Biblical emphasis upon the element of falsehood in the career of Satan might be taken to imply that his kingdom may be less in extent than appears. At any rate, it is confined to the cosmic sphere and to a limited portion of time. It is also doomed. In the closely related passages 2Pe_2:4 and Jud_1:6 it is affirmed that God cast the angels, when they sinned, down to Tartarus and committed them to pits of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. This both refers to the constant divine control of these insurgent forces and also points to their final and utter destruction. The putting of Satan in bonds is evidently both constant and progressive. The essential limitation of the empire of evil and its ultimate overthrow are foreshadowed in the Book of Job (chapters 38 through 41), where Yahweh's power extends even to the symbolized spirit of evil.
According to synoptic tradition, our Lord in the crisis of temptation immediately following the baptism (Mt 4 and parallel) met and for the time conquered Satan as His own personal adversary. This preliminary contest did not close the matter, but was the earnest of a complete victory. According to Luke (Luk_10:18), when the Seventy returned from their mission flushed with victory over the powers of evil, Jesus said: 'I saw Satan fall (not “fallen”; see Plummer, “Luke,” ICC, in the place cited.) as lightning from heaven.' In every triumph over the powers of evil Christ beheld in vision the downfall of Satan. In connection with the coming of the Hellenists who wished to see Him, Jesus asserted (Joh_12:31), “Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.” In view of His approaching passion He says again (Joh_14:30), “The prince of the world cometh: and he hath nothing in me.” Once again in connection with the promised advent of the Spirit, Jesus asserted (Joh_16:11) that the Spirit would convict the world of judgment, “because the prince of this world hath been judged.” In Hebrews (Heb_2:14, Heb_2:15) it is said that Christ took upon Himself human nature in order “that through death he might bring to nought him that had the power of death, that is, the Devil.” In 1Jo_3:8 it is said, “To this end was the Son of God manifested, that he might destroy the works of the Devil.” In Rev_12:9 it is asserted, in connection with Christ's ascension, that Satan was cast down to the earth and his angels with him. According to the passage immediately following (Rev_12:10-12), this casting down was not complete or final in the sense of extinguishing his activities altogether, but it involves the potential and certain triumph of God and His saints and the equally certain defeat of Satan. In 1Jo_2:13 the young men are addressed as those who “have overcome the evil one.” In Rev_20:1-15 the field of the future is covered in the assertion that Satan is “bound a thousand years”; then loosed “for a little time,” and then finally “cast into the lake of fire.”
A comparison of these passages will convince the careful student that while we cannot construct a definite chronological program for the career of Satan, we are clear in the chief points. He is limited, judged, condemned, imprisoned, reserved for judgment from the beginning. The outcome is certain though the process may be tedious and slow. The victory of Christ is the defeat of Satan; first, for Himself as Leader and Saviour of men (Joh_14:30); then, for believers (Luk_22:31; Act_26:18; Rom_16:20; Jam_4:7; 1Jo_2:13; 1Jo_5:4, 1Jo_5:18); and, finally, for the whole world (Rev_20:10). The work of Christ has already destroyed the empire of Satan.
III. General Considerations.
There are, no doubt, serious difficulties in the way of accepting the doctrine of a personal, superhuman, evil power as Satan is described to be. It is doubtful, however, whether these diffificulties may not be due, at least in part, to a misunderstanding of the doctrine and certain of its implications. In addition, it must be acknowledged, that whatever difficulties there may be in the teaching, they are exaggerated and, at the same time, not fairly met by the vague and irrational skepticism which denies without investigation. There are difficulties involved in any view of the world. To say the least, some problems are met by the view of a superhuman, evil world-power. In this section certain general considerations are urged with a view to lessening difficulties keenly felt by some minds. Necessarily, certain items gathered in the foregoing section are here emphasized again.

1. Scripture Doctrine of Satan Not Systematized:
The Scriptural doctrine of Satan is nowhere systematically developed. For materials in this field we are shut up to scattered and incidental references. These passages, which even in the aggregate are not numerous, tell us what we need to know concerning the nature, history, kingdom and works of Satan, but offer scant satisfaction to the merely speculative temper. The comparative lack of development in this field is due partly to the fact that the Biblical writers are primarily interested in God, and only secondarily in the powers of darkness; and partly to the fact that in the Bible doctrine waits upon fact. Hence, the malign and sinister figure of the Adversary is gradually outlined against the light of God's holiness as progressively revealed in the providential world-process which centers in Christ. It is a significant fact that the statements concerning Satan become numerous and definite only in the New Testament. The daylight of the Christian revelation was necessary in order to uncover the lurking foe, dimly disclosed but by no means fully known in the earlier revelation. The disclosure of Satan is, in form at least, historical, not dogmatic.

2. Satan and God:
In the second place, the relationship of Satan to God, already emphasized, must be kept constantly in mind. The doctrine of Satan merges in the general doctrine concerning angels (see ANGEL). It has often been pointed out that the personal characteristics of angels are very little insisted upon. They are known chiefly by their functions: merged, on the one hand, in their own offices, and, on the other, in the activities of God Himself.
In the Old Testament Satan is not represented as a fallen and malignant spirit, but as a servant of Yahweh, performing a divine function and having his place in the heavenly train. In the parallel accounts of David's numbering of Israel (1Sa_24:1; 1Ch_21:1) the tempting of David is attributed both to Yahweh and Satan. The reason for this is either that 'the temptation of men is also a part of his providence,' or that in the interval between the documents the personality of the tempter has more clearly emerged. In this case the account in Chronicles would nearly approximate the New Testament teaching. In the Book of Job (Job_1:6), however, Satan is among the Sons of God and his assaults upon Job are divinely permitted. In Zec (Job_3:1, Job_3:2) Satan is also a servant of Yahweh. In both these passages there is the hint of opposition between Yahweh and Satan. In the former instance Satan assails unsuccessfully the character of one whom Yahweh honors; while in the latter Yahweh explicitly rebukes Satan for his attitude toward Israel (see G. A. Smith, BTP, II, 316 f). The unveiling of Satan as a rebellious world-power is reserved for the New Testament, and with this fuller teaching the symbolic treatment of temptation in Gen is to be connected. There is a sound pedagogical reason, from the viewpoint of revelation, for this earlier withholding of the whole truth concerning Satan. In the early stages of religious thinking it would seem to be difficult, if not impossible, to hold the sovereignty of God without attributing to His agency those evils in the world which are more or less directly connected with judgment and punishment (compare Isa_45:7; Amo_3:6). The Old Testament sufficiently emphasizes man's responsibility for his own evil deeds, but super-human evil is brought upon him from above. “When willful souls have to be misled, the spirit who does so, as in Ahab's case, comes from above” (G. A. Smith, op. cit., 317). The progressive revelation of God's character and purpose, which more and more imperatively demands that the origin of moral evil, and consequently natural evil, must be traced to the created will in opposition to the divine will, leads to the ultimate declaration that Satan is a morally fallen being to whose conquest the Divine Power in history is pledged. There is, also, the distinct possibility that in the significant transition from the Satan of the Old Testament to that of the New Testament we have the outlines of a biography and an indication of the way by which the angels fell.

3. Satan Essentially Limited:
A third general consideration, based upon data given in the earlier section, should be urged in the same connection. In the New Testament delineation of Satan, his limitations are clearly set forth. He is superhuman, but not in any sense divine. His activities are cosmic, but not universal or transcendent. He is a created being. His power is definitely circumscribed. He is doomed to final destruction as a world-power. His entire career is that of a secondary and dependent being who is permitted a certain limited scope of power - a time-lease of activity (Luk_4:6).

4. Conclusions:
These three general considerations have been grouped in this way because they dispose of three objections which are current against the doctrine of Satan.
(1) The first is, that it is mythological in origin. That it is not dogmatic is a priori evidence against this hypothesis. Mythology is primitive dogma. There is no evidence of a theodicy or philosophy of evil in the Biblical treatment of Satan. Moreover, while the Scriptural doctrine is unsystematic in form, it is rigidly limited in scope and everywhere essentially consistent. Even in the Apocalypse, where naturally more scope is allowed to the imagination, the same essential ideas appear. The doctrine of Satan corresponds, item for item, to the intellectual saneness and ethical earnestness of the Biblical world-view as a whole. It is, therefore, not mythological. The restraint of chastened imagination, not the extravagance of mythological fancy, is in evidence throughout the entire Biblical treatment of the subject. Even the use of terms current in mythology (as perhaps Gen_3:1, Gen_3:13, Gen_3:14; Rev_12:7-9; compare 1Pe_5:8) does not imply more than a literary clothing of Satan in attributes commonly ascribed to malignant and disorderly forces.
(2) The second objection is that the doctrine is due to the influence of Persian dualism (see PERSIAN RELIGION; ZOROASTRIANISM). The answer to this is plain, on the basis of facts already adduced. The Biblical doctrine of Satan is not dualistic. Satan's empire had a beginning, it will have a definite and permanent end. Satan is God's great enemy in the cosmic sphere, but he is God's creation, exists by divine will, and his power is relatively no more commensurate with God's than that of men. Satan awaits his doom. Weiss says (concerning the New Testament representation of conflict between God and the powers of evil): “There lies in this no Manichaean dualism,... but only the deepest experience of the work of redemption as the definite destruction of the power from which all sin in the world of men proceeds” (Biblical Theology New Testament, English tanslations of the Bible, II, 272; compare G.A. Smith, op. cit., II, 318).
(3) The third objection is practically the same as the second, but addressed directly to the doctrine itself, apart from the question of its origin, namely, that it destroys the unity of God. The answer to this also is a simple negative. To some minds the reality of created wills is dualistic and therefore untenable. But a true doctrine of unity makes room for other wills than God's - namely of those beings upon whom God has bestowed freedom. Herein stands the doctrine of sin and Satan. The doctrine of Satan no more militates against the unity of God than the idea, so necessary to morality and religion alike, of other created wills set in opposition to God's. Just as the conception of Satan merges, in one direction, in the general doctrine of angels, so, in the other, it blends with the broad and difficult subject of evil (compare “Satan,” HDB, IV, 412a)
Literature.

All standard works on Biblical Theology, as well as Dictionaries, etc., treat with more or less thoroughness the doctrine of Satan. The German theologians of the more evangelical type, such as Weiss, Lange, Martensen (Danish), Dorner, while exhibiting a tendency toward excessive speculation, discern the deeper aspects of the doctrine. Of monographs known to the writer none are to be recommended without qualification. It is a subject on which the Bible is its own best interpreter.

BEING A BENEFICIARY

BEING A BENEFICIARY
Tuesday, April 18, 2017

John 14:26-27; 16:31-33 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. … Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Philippians [ESV] 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
1Peter [ESV] 5:6-11 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Suppose you discovered you are the beneficiary of some wonderful gifts? Would you say “No thank you?”
Being a follower of Christ has many benefits beyond “Going to heaven when I die.” I see individuals accepting. I see individuals not accepting.
In life there are those that prey on others. For some the game summarizes their life. They are no different than an addict planning their day around the next drink or fix. These troubled souls dysfunction at levels from “He, it’s just a little fun.” to vicious hyena like behavior. They, and all in between players, can sense vulnerability like a sky high vulture senses its next meal.
Henry (aka) was just such an inviting target for the first decades of his miserable life. He frequently wondered “Why do so many people always pick on me?”
Then one afternoon after many conversations with Pat, an empathetic Christian that impressed Henry with his calm demeanor, Henry personally trusted Jesus as Redeemer. But Henry soon decided that even though he prayed for deliverance from his tormentors, God was not doing anything as his personal protector. Actually it had worsened as now he was being additionally harassed as a Christian.
After several years of suffering his worsened situation, in desperation he formulated a nasty defensive manner . . . and then he remembered Pat’s calm confidence.
Henry told Pat about his dreadful problem. In answering Pat’s initial delving, Henry assured him he was being faithful in reading his Bible, praying, and participating at a local assembly. Then Pat asked “But are you applying God’s guidance to your life, and in particular, your problem? God rarely interferes by removing problem persons. God didn’t do so in Eden and what makes you think He will do so for you?”
Henry reacted in baffled resentment. “So this is my fault!? You’re saying it’s punishment for my sins?”
Without being accusatory, Pat responded “Beyond reading and praying, have you truly accepted and made use of the benefits of Jesus’ peace by actually authentically casting your care upon Him?”
Henry began to do so, and it became habit. His situation changed. He even developed the peacemakers’ skill of turning such instances into opportunities to tell of God’s love and how He provides ways of deliverance. Afterward he with friend Randy sometimes pondered how different life may be if Adam and Eve had trusted God with their anxiety (Feelings of insufficiency.) and allowed Him to continue to provide direction for them.

WHO'S SORRY NOW?

WHO’S SORRY NOW?
Monday, April 17, 2017

John 16:1-16 [Jesus explained, beginning withLet not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” ] These things [chapters 14 & 15] have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you. But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

For me, self-examination doesn’t always begin with Scripture. I do however believe that as God’s John 1:12 child it begins with His Holy Spirit within me. Then I look in the mirror of His Word. This morning while reading the Omaha World-Herald over cornflakes, strawberries, coffee and initial pharmaceuticals of the day, this was the aforementioned pattern.
On page 4B is a satirical (or is it “sarcastic”, or maybe “sardonic”?) political cartoon. Obviously at the end of a session, the counselor says “Now Jarod and Steve, I want you both to tell each other you’re sorry …” The two on far opposite ends of the couch, with sideways glare at one another, in unison say “You’re sorry.”
Whoa Nelly, I’ve been there! A good thing to remember from my past performance.
More importantly is the question of where I now sit. To answer this I begin with a question: Is there presently people and their ways that I am subjectively offended by or lacking in forgiveness?
After some reflection, yes, indeed there are matters I could subjectively unforgivingly stumble over the emotion and it’s inevitable results, but I have not. The people and matters are real, but thus far I’m dealing with them objectively.
·         Not denying the realities.
·         Clearly identifying them.
·         Forgiving as needed. (Some things never get to the point of needing to forgive as I constantly work at the application of the complete Serenity Prayer.
·         Objectively examining any necessary possible solutions and/or alternatives.
·         Politely, but firmly, standing if needed.
  Then I review “Why forgive?
·         Pleasing God via authentic Romans 12:1-3 worship. Knowing that forgiveness is very much central to this worship.
·         I myself wanting to live forgiven and in God’s peace; unhindered by utmost serious conflict. Mk.16:25-26; Lk.6:37
·         Knowing I cannot expect all others to see and understand what I see as God’s John 3:3 born-again son. Lk.23:34
·         And as old friend Joe Smith taught me, “Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.”
As the day goes on I’m sure I’ll remember and ponder more, as will you.

RESURRECTION DAY?

RESURRECTION DAY?
Sunday, April 16, 2017

1Peter MKJV 1:1-9  Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the elect sojourners of the Dispersion of Pontus, of Galatia, of Cappadocia, of Asia, and of Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, to obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ. May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and unfading, reserved in Heaven for you by the power of God, having been kept through faith to a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time; in which you greatly rejoice, yet a little while, if need be, grieving in manifold temptations; so that the trial of your faith (being much more precious than that of gold that perishes, but being proven through fire) might be found to praise and honor and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen, you love; in whom not yet seeing, but believing in Him you exult with unspeakable joy, and having been glorified, obtaining the end of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Of lately, the gloomy cold rainy weather fit Jack’s mood perfectly as he, head down, countenance sour, dejectedly trudged to work in the morning shadows.
Jack noticed a man walking his way, recognizing an always happy fellow that attended the same church as he and his family. Hunching his shoulders and pulling the brim of his cap lower, Jack accelerated his pace.
Undeterred by Jack’s rude behavior, smiling broadly, the man cheerfully greeted Jack by name, asking, “How is your resurrection day going?”
Deliberately mumbling an unintelligible reply, Jack rammed his hands deeper into his pockets and, head down, trudged on.
As his workday wore on, Jack could not get the odd greeting out of his mind.
Later in the afternoon, while staring morbidly out the window at dark rainy weather, it struck him. Christ’ resurrection was not His alone. It is not limited to something He did. It is not exclusively His to live. Resurrection is the eternal abundant life that He gifts to all who will receive, trusting Him as Lord and Savior.
For the believer, everlasting resurrection is our assured present possession; but is it just as certainly our daily preoccupation? “Does the Spirit of the one who brought Jesus back to life live in you? Then the one who brought Christ back to life will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you. So, brothers and sisters, we have no obligation to live the way our corrupt nature wants us to live.” (Romans GW 8:11-12)

RESURRECTION LIFE IS NOT A PARTY

RESURRECTION LIFE IS NOT A PARTY
Friday, April 14, 2017

Romans [MKJV] 1:15-19 So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Romans [GW] 8:1-17  So those who are believers in Christ Jesus can no longer be condemned. The standards of the Spirit, who gives life through Christ Jesus, have set you free from the standards of sin and death. It is impossible to do what God's standards demand because of the weakness our human nature has. But God sent his Son to have a human nature as sinners have and to pay for sin. That way God condemned sin in our corrupt nature. Therefore, we, who do not live by our corrupt nature but by our spiritual nature, are able to meet God's standards. Those who live by the corrupt nature have the corrupt nature's attitude. But those who live by the spiritual nature have the spiritual nature's attitude. The corrupt nature's attitude leads to death. But the spiritual nature's attitude leads to life and peace. This is so because the corrupt nature has a hostile attitude toward God. It refuses to place itself under the authority of God's standards because it can't. Those who are under the control of the corrupt nature can't please God. But if God's Spirit lives in you, you are under the control of your spiritual nature, not your corrupt nature. Whoever doesn't have the Spirit of Christ doesn't belong to him. However, if Christ lives in you, your bodies are dead because of sin, but your spirits are alive because you have God's approval. Does the Spirit of the one who brought Jesus back to life live in you? Then the one who brought Christ back to life will also make your mortal bodies alive by his Spirit who lives in you. So, brothers and sisters, we have no obligation to live the way our corrupt nature wants us to live. If you live by your corrupt nature, you are going to die. But if you use your spiritual nature to put to death the evil activities of the body, you will live. Certainly, all who are guided by God's Spirit are God's children. You haven't received the spirit of slaves that leads you into fear again. Instead, you have received the spirit of God's adopted children by which we call out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. If we are his children, we are also God's heirs. If we share in Christ's suffering in order to share his glory, we are heirs together with him.

In submission to His Father’s will, Jesus suffered so that those who trust Him gain eternal redemption; resurrection life spiritually, mentally, emotionally present and physically future. Jesus’ John 1:12 family are quickened, made alive together in and by His resurrection. (Col.2:13)
Resurrection presently ours includes some delightful experiences, but should not be thought a party, for as we follow and serve Him, it may be anything but gala.
Here in the USA, Christian life is a cakewalk compared to historical and present day maltreatment of Christians in other nations and cultures. ISIS is not the first to behead Christians. However, this USA pleasantness for followers of Christ has diminished in the years since WWII and apparently will continue to do so.
All of the apostles, save one as Jesus said would be, died horrible deaths because of their service for The Lord. The letter to the Hebrews tells of this. “… others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.” (MKJV Heb.11:35-38)
