WHO IS JESUS?

WHO IS JESUS?
Tuesday, July 31, 2018

Matthew [GW] 16:13-16 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"They answered, "Some say you are John the Baptizer, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."He asked them, "But who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!"

What we believe and say of Jesus is essential to salvation. “…everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. God loved the world this way: He gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not die but will have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but to save the world. Those who believe in him won't be condemned. But those who don't believe are already condemned because they don't believe in God's only Son.”(Jn.3:15-18; also note Rom.10:1-10)
Summarized from denominational statements, what do others of faith say Jesus is?

Muslims: On the ceiling of their revered shrine inside the Dome of the Rock there is in Arabic a 730 foot long message for Christians stating: The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of God. … So believe in God and his messengers, and say not ‘Three’. … God is only One God. Far be it removed from his transcendent majesty that he should have a son. He may turn Christians to Islam.

Jehovah’s Witnesses: Jesus is not God. Before he lived on earth, he was Michael, the archangel. Jehovah made the universe through him. On earth he was a man who lived a perfect life. After dying on a stake 9not a cross0, he was resurrected as a spirit: his body was destroyed. Jesus is not coming again, he “returned” invisibly in 1914 in spirit. Very soon, he and the angels will destroy all non-Jehovah Witnesses.

Mormonism: Jesus is a separate god from the Father (Elohim). He was created as a spirit child by the Father and Mother in heaven., and is the elder brother of all men and spirit  beings (including Lucifer). His body was created through sexual union between Elohim and Mary. Jesus was married. His death does not provide full atonement for sin but does facilitate resurrection for all people.

Seventh-day Adventists: God the Father in exalting Jesus provoked Lucifer’s jealousy resulting in war in heaven. Jesus’ life proves we can live sinlessly. His death did not complete atonement. Since 1844 his blood is applied for “investigative judgment”. He is also identified as Michael the Archangel.

Hinduism: A teacher or avatar. A child of God as with all others; he did not atone for sin or rise from the dead.

Hare Krishna: A vegetarian teacher of meditation, but not God Incarnate.

Unification church: Though a perfect man Jesus was not God, but son of Zechariah.

Buddhism: An enlightened teacher. An avatar to some.

Tanscendental Meditation (TM); A divine by-discovery presence but not uniquely God. He couldn’t suffer.

Christian Science: Jesus displayed the Christ idea, but was not Christ.

Unity School of Christianity: Jesus was a man with “Christ consciousness” but was not Christ.

New Age: A mishmash of beliefs with Jesus as a sometimes psychic force.

Wicca: Rejected altogether or sometimes considered a spiritual teacher.

Scientology; Rarely mentioned but did not die for sins.

Again, the personal question of present and eternal consequence we all decide whether by deliberation or neglect: Who do I believe and say Jesus is? Romans 10:9-10

WHO IS HE THAT STRENGTHENS

WHO IS HE THAT STRENGTHENS?
Monday, July 30, 2018

‘“When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?”’ (Mt.16:13-15)

We may declare “I can do all things through Jesus that strengtheneth me!” (Phil.4:13) but can we truly claim such position without qualifying as did God’s penman Apostle Paul? (Read all of Philippians to see qualifiers prior to his 4:13 declaration.) Paul accepted God’s sovereignty and thereby lived confidently regardless of the state he was in. (Also note 1Tim.4:8)
Paul also definitively knew the Who? and What? of Lord Jesus Christ. His strength in good and bad times was not simply based in emotional trust but with factual knowledge. (The opposite of such knowledge is often “The god of my understanding.”)

My identity is in and by Jesus. In Him I see myself, others, life differently. Jn.3:3; 2Cor.5:17-21
Jesus gives me present and eternal purpose in living. Eccl.12:23-14; Jn.10:10; 2Cor.14-15

Jesus is before all things, and by Him all things consist. Col.1:17
Jesus is the only true Redeemer. Rom.12:1-2
Jesus is the sin-bearer, taking away my burden of guilt. 1Pet.2:24
Jesus is the King of Kings deserving all honor and worship. Rom.12:1-3; Rev.1:5-7
Jesus is the true Shepherd, my shepherd. Jn.10:11; Heb.13:5, 20
Jesus is my peace. Phil.4:6-7; 2Tim.1:7
In Jesus alone I find true freedom. Jn.8:34-36; Gal.5:1
Jesus has made me acceptable to God. Rom.4:16-25; Eph.1:6
In Jesus I can rejoice in all events whether happy or sad. Jn.15:9-11
Jesus is my mediator. Rom.8:32-35; 1Tim.2:5; Heb.7:25

Jesus is my hope. Col.1:27; 1Thes.1:3; 1Pet.1:3
Jesus alone makes me pure. Phil.3:8-9
Jesus is that provides for my abundant life (as opposed to loneliness and despair). Jn.10:10
Jesus is my main motivator. 2Cor.5:14-15; Col.2:13
Jesus is my perfect example. Jn.13:12-17
Jesus is my source of strength. Phil.4:13
Jesus is my dearest most important friend. Jn.15:15; Rev.3:20
Jesus is my comforter. Mt.11:28-30
Jesus provides true satisfaction as opposed to dryness without Him. Jn.4:13-14
Jesus provides light in this dark world. Jn.8:12
Jesus provides clear focus. Heb.3:1
Jesus provides confidence in all circumstance. Rom.8:13-17; 2Tim.1:6-9; Heb.4:16
Jesus will never leave nor forsake His brethren. Heb.13:5
Jesus is The One! 1Cor.1:25-31

As stated in previous DTs, strength is not gained or maintained without exercise. As an exercise toward godly strength I suggest printing out the above list or similar one and exercise once a day looking up Bible verses for each of the 28 points. And then keep available for reference and sharing.
We do want Philippians 4:13 to be personally authentic . . . don’t we? Or would we rather fail stress tests?  EBB4

PLASTER OF PARIS

PLASTER OF PARIS
Friday, July 27, 2018

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Don’t know about you, but I’ve always suffered and enjoyed curious inclination. The suffering involving controlling the distracting appetite in order to fulfill responsibilities; the enjoying being when I bite and discover bits of interesting information.
While reading I ran across “plaster of Paris” and my curiosity hungered to know more.
As a small boy doing hand casts, ash trays, and other child art, I thought it new. Using it for repairs when older I knew it wasn’t discovered when I was a tyke. With a brief web search I was surprised that it was used in Syria and Anatolia 90 centuries ago and that Egyptians used it as mortar and plaster in monuments and pyramid. Later, the Greeks even figured out how to make light windows out of it!
But that’s not how the versatile compound received the name presently in use.
Beginning Wednesday, September 2 and finally dying down Friday, September 5, 1666, a great fire destroyed Old London as it swept thru uncontrollably. In alarmed reaction, the King of France mandated, with enforcement, that all wooden houses in Paris be plastered over as protection against inferno. And so we have yet today the generic trade label “plaster of Paris”. Imagine the uproar today if our president mandated all wooden houses be plastered over.
Such curiosity exercised results in nothing more than knowledge of trivia, right?
Well, that’s how it was for me until after age 27; up until my becoming new creation (2Cor.5:17) with the mind of Christ (1Cor.2:16b), such was intellectually stimulating and discussion equipping, and at times used in one-upmanship ego games. After my personal John 3:3 renewal, I see plaster of Paris, Scots of yore striving to make a better feather stuffed golf ball, who really is or is not Irish, et al, not as mere trivia but thru different eyes . . . seeing all connected to man’s struggles for sense, direction and survival in a tumultuous confusing world.
Then there’s “trivia”, the word originally meaning basic education for undergraduates studying grammar, rhetoric and logic; now meaning nice or fun to know, not essential foundational information.
Many things change, some are plastered over with gypsum, others get plastered with green beer, but thankfully that which is eternal and indispensable never alters, Lord Jesus Christ being the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Heb.13:8)

A CAUCASIAN CASTE SYSTEM

A CAUCASIAN CASTE SYSTEM
Thursday, July 26, 2018

India and such ilk were not alone, it was once commonly thought in white society European and American that birthright was providence. The quality of the sheets you were birthed upon was your fate. Though this is no longer broadly thought there is still individual and group stuck in impoverished thinking. General Booth, founder of the Salvation Army (1865) and others before and those later came to the forefront actively challenging the unbiblical mindset. USA’s “land of opportunity” especially has and continues to do so.
What does God say on the matter socially casting those born rich or poor? Again I share with you a GotQuestions.org concise summary on the topic. Read on. If necessary, do a Romans 12:1-3 rethink.
EBB4

Question: "What is a biblical view of social action?"

Answer:
In recent years Christians have stepped more boldly into the social arena and made their voices heard. Both Christians and non-Christians alike have taken another look at the Bible’s emphasis on helping the poor and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Leviticus 25:35; Exodus 22:25; James 2:14–16). Whereas a few decades ago religion was thought to be best practiced behind church doors on Sundays, today’s Christians are realizing that was never Jesus’ intent.

One fact that is often overlooked in our post-Christian culture is that most major humanitarian efforts, such as hospitals, orphanages, and universities, were initiated by Christians seeking to make a difference in the world. The abolitionist movements in England and the United States were spearheaded by followers of Christ. Christians are one of the most socially active groups in existence because our Leader, Jesus Christ, taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). Organizations such as Samaritan’s Purse, Compassion International, Focus on the Family, the A21 Campaign, Open Doors, and countless others exist because Christians saw a need and took action.

It’s when Christians use their influence to try to correct moral and ethical issues that the objections begin. Some argue that “separation of church and state” requires all religion to stay out of the public square. Although the idea of separation of church and state has been used to silence the timid, it appears nowhere in the Constitution of the United States, and Christians need not fear that by expressing a biblically based opinion that they are somehow violating a fundamental aspect of our nation’s freedom.

Despite His lifestyle of always doing good (Acts 10:38), Jesus did not come into the world to be a social reformer. His miracles, healing, and teachings were not efforts to right all wrongs or to permanently relieve suffering. If that had been His purpose in coming, why would He have waited until that period of history? There had been eons of suffering prior to the birth of Christ. If Jesus had come to address social issues, why spend only three years doing so? Why not start at age 12 when He realized He was to be about His Father’s business (Luke 2:49)? Why not avoid crucifixion at age 33 so that He could spend decades reforming?

Jesus’ kindness to the oppressed and ostracized was well known, but He was clear that His purpose in coming to earth was not humanitarian; it was spiritual. Jesus said, “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). He came to preach the good news of the kingdom (Mark 1:36–38). He came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 5:17). He came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45; cf. John 12:27) and “to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8).

Jesus’ major objective in coming to earth was the salvation of mankind. He brought God to fallen Man (John 10:10; 14:9), and then He died for the sins of the world (Matthew 16:21; 20:28; Mark 8:31; John 10:18). After His resurrection, Jesus left the good news of salvation with a handful of followers who used it to change the world (see Acts 17:6). Earlier, Jesus had told them of the difference they would make in society: “You are the salt of the earth. . . . You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:13–16).

Salt brings out the flavor of any food. It also preserves, cleans, and helps heal infection. In order for Christians to be “salt” in the world, we must maintain those distinct properties that come from abiding in God’s Word. When we assimilate the world’s way of thinking and behaving, we lose our saltiness. Our presence on social issues adds balance to an otherwise out-of-control system controlled by Satan (see 2 Corinthians 4:4).

Light banishes darkness. But a light hidden under a basket cannot illuminate anything. When we hide inside our churches and refuse to bring that light into the community, we are spiritually useless. But when, with Holy Spirit boldness, we speak up, run for office, and illuminate social issues with the truth of God’s Word, we are letting His light shine through us. When we see culture praising the murder of unborn children, we must let God’s light shine brightly on the scene and speak His truth in contrast to the neutral words used to defend the indefensible (see Psalm 82:4; Proverbs 24:11). When we learn of poverty-stricken people, we must apply God’s truth to our lives and do what we can to help (Isaiah 58:6–7; James 2:15–17). When injustice rules, we must speak out on behalf of the oppressed, like the Lord Jesus did (Luke 20:46–47; Mark 7:9–13).

Christians should be socially active to the extent God would have them do so. The responsibility of every Christian is to know God’s Word and apply it. James 4:17 says, “If anyone . . . knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.” Social action will look different for different individuals because God has gifted us differently. For some, social action will mean holding political office and working to bring truth and justice to a broad arena. For others, social action means using the material wealth God has provided to eliminate hunger and other effects of poverty at home and around the world.

Social action for Christians means we live our faith 24/7 whether at home, at our jobs, or at our places of worship. There is no switch to flip off our “light” whenever we feel like it. As believers, we take the Holy Spirit with us wherever we go (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). And, because we live in communities and have connections available like never before, God expects us to be salt and light in those communities, flavoring, challenging, and illuminating everywhere we can.

BREAD & WATER?
Wednesday, July 25, 2018

On Sunday, July 15th I wrote: During the final year of our USA Civil War a British minister and his wife founded a ministry that to this day is compassionately effective there, here, and elsewhere. Their doctrinal statement is as with other Christian groups but with 2 exceptions. They don’t list the practice of baptism or communion nor do they offer or practice either. How do you respond to this fact?

Only one reader responded: I expect to see members of Salvation Army Church in heaven and see no reason to break fellowship with them on earth because they don't practice baptism or communion.  These practices are important to me but Salvation Army's main emphasis is reaching the lost for Jesus and meeting the needs of people in crisis.  I respect them and the work they are doing for the Kingdom of God.
Salvation is not dependent on baptism or communion.  We are saved by our faith in Jesus. John 1:12 " But to all who believed him and accept him, he gave the right to become children of God."
Romans 10:10 "For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved."
Galatians 3:26  "We are all children of God by faith in Christ Jesus."
Phillip baptized the eunuch as an act of his faith.  He confessed his belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God.  Then they looked for water, stopped the chariot, went into the water  and Phillip baptized him.  See Acts 8:37-38.
Young's Analytical Concordance and Strong's Exhaustive Concordance each list only one scripture (1Corinthians 10:16) which uses the word communion meaning partaking of the bread and wine.  The Gospels (Luke 22:14 - 20;  Matthew 26:20 - 29; Mark 14:22 - 25) tell about Jesus instituting the Lord's Supper.
Baptism and Communion are New Testament ordinances which we practice as an expression of our love and commitment to Jesus.  We can love and accept other believers in Christ whose practices differ from ours. We would be happier more productive people if we focused more on what convictions we share and less on our differences.  Different may not be wrong -- only different.
srf

My position is: Biblically baptism and communion should be offered and practiced. However, they are not essential to salvation. Why did General Booth in founding the Salvation Army set the policy of not doing so? He saw multitudes of professing Christians relying on baptism and/or communion for salvation; man’s doctrine nowhere found in God’s Word. Though I see Salvation Army’s then and now reason, I do believe they should offer baptism and communion. I would not however break fellowship or support over this difference.
If not by baptism and/or communion then what must we do to be saved? I share summary provided by GotQuestions.org.  EBB4

Question: "How can I be saved?"

Answer:
This simple, yet profound, question is the most important question that can be asked. "How can I be saved?" deals with where we will spend eternity after our lives in this world are over. There is no more important issue than our eternal destiny. Thankfully, the Bible is abundantly clear on how a person can be saved. The Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). Paul and Silas responded, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).

How can I be saved? Why do I need to be saved?
We are all infected with sin (Romans 3:23). We are born with sin (Psalm 51:5), and we all personally choose to sin (Ecclesiastes 7:20; 1 John 1:8). Sin is what makes us unsaved. Sin is what separates us from God. Sin is what has us on the path to eternal destruction.

How can I be saved? Saved from what?
Because of our sin, we all deserve death (Romans 6:23). While the physical consequence of sin is physical death, that is not the only kind of death that results from sin. All sin is ultimately committed against an eternal and infinite God (Psalm 51:4). Because of that, the just penalty for our sin is also eternal and infinite. What we need to be saved from is eternal destruction (Matthew 25:46; Revelation 20:15).

How can I be saved? How did God provide salvation?
Because the just penalty for sin is infinite and eternal, only God could pay the penalty, because only He is infinite and eternal. But God, in His divine nature, could not die. So God became a human being in the person of Jesus Christ. God took on human flesh, lived among us, and taught us. When the people rejected Him and His message, and sought to kill Him, He willingly sacrificed Himself for us, allowing Himself to be crucified (John 10:15). Because Jesus Christ was human, He could die; and because Jesus Christ was God, His death had an eternal and infinite value. Jesus’ death on the cross was the perfect and complete payment for our sin (1 John 2:2). He took the consequences we deserved. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead demonstrated that His death was indeed the perfectly sufficient sacrifice for sin.

How can I be saved? What do I need to do?
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). God has already done all of the work. All you must do is receive, in faith, the salvation God offers (Ephesians 2:8-9). Fully trust in Jesus alone as the payment for your sins. Believe in Him, and you will not perish (John 3:16). God is offering you salvation as a gift. All you have to do is accept it. Jesus is the way of salvation (John 14:6).

FISHY FEELINGS

FISHY FEELINGS
Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Ephesians [GW] 3:12 We can go to God with bold confidence through faith in Christ.

I’m thankful that one of the important things my early mentors explained is that my feelings should never be the basis for trust in God. (Peter and company is prime example. Mk.14:29-31)
Do you ever feel like the Lord is not with you? I had bouts of this distracting spiritual subtraction the first few weeks after I personally trusted Jesus is Redeemer. Some of you may suffer this distraction from time to time, often, or even at this moment. (I use “subtraction” and “distraction” because that is exactly what doubting His presence does to us; weakening us, getting our mind off salvation’s service. Phil.2:12b)
Feelings are fickle, including moodiness, hormonal, cloudy and foggy, cold, hot, lukewarm.  Feeling at a loss of closeness can be result of codependency, measuring our feelings by or against the emotions and/or fellowship situation of others. (Phil.2:4) Picture a stoical personality in the midst of sanguine extroverts.
Though feelings may align with facts, feelings are frequently contrary to facts.
Two facts pertinent to today’s topic: The Word of God is Truth and Jesus said He never leaves nor forsakes us. (Jn.17:17; Josh.1:5; Heb.13:5-6)
Though trusting Him as Redeemer, due to overly relating to adverse circumstance we may feel like Jesus is not with us, but the fact is, He is always, everywhere, now and eternally with us.
Trust His Truth and the feeling of distracting discontentment will be replaced by the traction (i.e. gripping power) of contentment. (Phil.4:11-13)

OBVIOUS HE IS?
Monday, July 23, 2018

A challenging retort to yesterday’s DT: “God doesn’t need to be obvious to be authenticated!!”
Absolutely true, He doesn’t need verifying. But Pharaohs, Egyptians, Jews and Gentiles do have the need for evidence. (Ex.3; Ps.19:1; Isa.40:26; Rom.1:20; Heb.11:1-3)

Psalm [GW] 19:1-14  For the choir director; a psalm by David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky displays what his hands have made. One day tells a story to the next. One night shares knowledge with the next without talking, without words, without their voices being heard. Yet, their sound has gone out into the entire world, their message to the ends of the earth. He has set up a tent in the heavens for the sun, which comes out of its chamber like a bridegroom. Like a champion, it is eager to run its course. It rises from one end of the heavens. It circles around to the other. Nothing is hidden from its heat. The teachings of the LORD are perfect. They renew the soul. The testimony of the LORD is dependable. It makes gullible people wise. The instructions of the LORD are correct. They make the heart rejoice. The command of the LORD is radiant. It makes the eyes shine. The fear of the LORD is pure. It endures forever. The decisions of the LORD are true. They are completely fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even the drippings from a honeycomb. As your servant I am warned by them. There is a great reward in following them. Who can notice every mistake? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep me from sinning. Do not let anyone gain control over me. Then I will be blameless, and I will be free from any great offense. May the words from my mouth and the thoughts from my heart be acceptable to you, O LORD, my rock and my defender.

Dad was diplomatic about most matters but quite blunt on others. I remember him repeatedly saying “Only a fool doesn’t see God!” It wasn’t until I began reading Scripture that I learned the apostle Paul said it prior to Dad’s statements.
One of the things I liked as a free roaming child and later on the farm is being outdoors in field and forest. The experience became much more significant after considering Romans chapter 1. Additionally years later I recognized man’s knowledge of good and evil and contradictory actions according to also authenticates the Word living and written.
The Nazis that love children and massacred others. The doctor and coach that care very much for the health of patients and yet exercised wickedness. And big time how easily the veneer of civilization is peeled away. Then there is believers’ spiritual warfare. Yes, mankind validates the Author and His Word!

Luke [GW] 10:38-42 As they were traveling along, Jesus went into a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary. Mary sat at the Lord's feet and listened to him talk. But Martha was upset about all the work she had to do. So she asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work all by myself? Tell her to help me." The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha! You worry and fuss about a lot of things. There's only one thing you need. Mary has made the right choice, and that one thing will not be taken away from her."

I enjoy reading Joel C. Rosenberg’s insightful novels. I’m presently reading THE KREMLIN CONSPIRACY and recommend it along with his other books. Last evening I read “Jesus wasn’t about projects; he was about people.” “Love your neighbor, not your work.” and awoke this morning thinking about the importance of those two statements. My thoughts then returned to Mary and Martha and Jesus explaining situational priorities in ministering to one another.
There are times when we must decide the priority of the moment and act accordingly. Not an easy thing for those that prefer things to be “just so”. Have you ever been in a Martha setting where you wished they’d simply set the table with peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and loaf of bread?
  Beware Martharization!

PACKAGING

PACKAGING
Thursday, July 19, 2018

Matthew 16:1-12 … How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, …
Luke 4:3-4 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. [Deut.8:3]

Who eats Stroganoff for breakfast? I do. I did so this morning.
But why? Well, first of all, I like it. Then there’s the happiness matter of food expiration dates being very important to someone important to me.
But how could I do such a thing? By stepping outside of confinement of childhood ingrained “breakfast food”.
Then there’s consumption beyond bacon and eggs, Cheerios et al allowing examination of more important deeply ingrained beliefs. God’s Old Testament penmen encouraged such exercise. Jesus emphasized doing so as He walked among men. God’s New Testament penmen promoted the practice; the apostle Paul packaging the healthy diet in Romans 12:1-3.
Beware accepting packaging without examination.  Please consume virtuously with the nobility of Acts 17:11.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Tuesday, July 17, 2018

Psalm 144:15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Read “pursuit of happiness” and what do you think of? If aware of USA history: the Declaration of Independence, or simply exercising the pursuit of happiness – a common activity.  Either or both meaning what? A bit of Wikipedia research shows “There is debate about what the word "happiness" may have meant in 1776. Current usage focuses on pleasant, positive emotions and having needs satisfied,[7][8] whereas in 1776 the common meaning may have been "prosperity, thriving, wellbeing".[9][10] “ Either or all definitions and their application prone to interfering with and hindering our pursuit of God and godliness centered in worship and community.
I’ll not say God doesn’t want us to be happy, but that it shouldn’t be our paramount quest above seeking God, godliness and His kingdom first of all. Jesus taught “Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.“ (ESV Matthew chapter 6, also note Luke chapter 12)

DIS OR EN?

DIS OR EN?
Monday, July 16, 2018

Exodus [GW] 6:6-9 "Tell the Israelites, 'I am the LORD. I will bring you out from under the oppression of the Egyptians, and I will free you from slavery. I will rescue you with my powerful arm and with mighty acts of judgment. Then I will make you my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the forced labor of the Egyptians. I will bring you to the land I solemnly swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your own possession. I am the LORD.'" Moses reported this to the Israelites. But they would not listen to him because they were so discouraged by their back-breaking work.
Psalm 42:5-6a Why are you discouraged, my soul? Why are you so restless? Put your hope in God, because I will still praise him. He is my savior and my God. My soul is discouraged. That is why I will remember you [Jehovah God] …

The GW translation of Scripture shows “discouragement” in *26 verses, 21 in OT, 5 in NT.
No argument, people do get discouraged. Some individuals and groups plod in life and die discouraged. Discouragement is in my past, but became classroom history and useful tool. How so?
  What is discouragement?
Digging into the word I understand discouragement meaning away/apart from active/solid courage/valor/daring. Encouragement is precisely the opposite; with active/solid courage/valor/daring.
As result of personal experience, observation, and Bible study and contemplation I see discouragement or encouragement as commonly being in direct proportion to our standards; my expectations of ought-to-have and my interpretation of success.
Digging into the Word, I see that for the follower of Christ the choice of personal standpoint is in inseparable proportion to faith; the measure of trust in self/others/this world as opposed to blessed assurance via reliance on God in diverse circumstances pleasing or punishing.
This attitude and exercise is also directly connected to our authentically praying “Thy will be done on earth as in heaven.” Earth being the abode of person, home, neighborhood, workplace, nations . . . and assembled or disassembled Christian brethren.
Let us never forget that “The following is written, "I believed; therefore, I spoke." We have that same spirit of faith. We also believe; therefore, we also speak. We know that the one who brought the Lord Jesus back to life will also bring us back to life through Jesus. He will present us to God together with you. All this is for your sake so that, as God's kindness overflows in the lives of many people, it will produce even more thanksgiving to the glory of God. That is why we are not discouraged. Though outwardly we are wearing out, inwardly we are renewed day by day. Our suffering is light and temporary and is producing for us an eternal glory that is greater than anything we can imagine. We don't look for things that can be seen but for things that can't be seen. Things that can be seen are only temporary. But things that can't be seen last forever.” (2Cor.4:13-18)

BREAD AND WATER?

BREAD AND WATER?
Sunday, July 15, 2018

During the final year of our USA Civil War a British minister and his wife founded a ministry that to this day is compassionately effective there, here, and elsewhere. Their doctrinal statement is as with other Christian groups but with 2 exceptions. They don’t list the practice of baptism or communion nor do they offer or practice either.
I’m now asking how do you respond to this fact?
I’ve not provided any Bible verses today as I don’t want to influence or assist you in your response. It is up to you to present your thoughts with what you consider proof verses. Your responses will be published later this week.

SIX QUESTIONS

SIX BIBLE STUDY QUESTIONS
Friday, July 13, 2018

2Timothy 2:15 Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

A number of you will leap with recognition . . . well, maybe not leap, but you will recognize the 6 questions from High School daze. They aren’t just for English class. They’re great tools in Bible study.
·         WHO? Wrote it? Said it? Are the chief characters? People mentioned? Spoken to? Spoken of?
·         WHAT? Significant incidents? Top ideas? Major precepts? Important teachings? The people like? Is purpose in stating? Central to conversation?
·         WHEN? Time written? Take place? Happen? Said? Action done?
·         WHERE?  Done? Said? Happen? To whom?
·         WHY? Said? Mentioned at all? So short? So long? Was OT mentioned or referred to? Do as told?
·         HOW? Done? Did happen? Demonstrated?
These 6 big questions with subheadings are advantageous in studying. Please make good use of them.

USA IN PROPHECY

USA IN PROPHECY
Thursday, July 12, 2018

I’m asked if the USA is mentioned in the Bible. The answer is no and yes.
No, nowhere is USA, the United States of America mentioned specifically. But then neither are Australia, Canada, Mexico or a lot of other countries.
Yes, the USA, Australia, Canada, Mexico and all other countries not mentioned specifically are mentioned inclusively: The USA and all others against Jerusalem. (Ez.38:16-23; Zech.12:9;14:2-4) This effort, including the USA with few exceptions has been common practice and shall culminate largely in a final attempt at destruction of the nation of Israel, the Jew.

DENYING THE WAY OF ESCAPE

DENYING THE WAY OF ESCAPE
Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Romans [GW] 14:12  All of us will have to give an account of ourselves to God.
1Corinthians 10:12-14 So, people who think they are standing firmly should be careful that they don't fall. There isn't any temptation that you have experienced which is unusual for humans. God, who faithfully keeps his promises, will not allow you to be tempted beyond your power to resist. But when you are tempted, he will also give you the ability to endure the temptation as your way of escape. Therefore, my dear friends, get as far away from the worship of false gods as you can.

Who is the most responsible for my decisions and actions?
I am. This has been so from Adam and Eve on. Read the Genesis account in chapter 3. Romans 14:2 explains this clearly. 1Corinthians 10:13 is bracketed by verses referring to individual personal responsibility. I, like Adam, am without excuse.
How many times has, like him, wondering been my path to wandering far from the Way (Jn.14:6) of escape?
Oh yes, in hindsight I recognize deliberately erred decisions and actions. Then there is the truth of my life including having seen the godly path but taking another of my preference.
Beware of self denying the way of God’s exit!

WRETCHED COMPARISONS

WRETCHED COMPARISONS
Tuesday, July 10, 2018

Psalm 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

It is not enough for us to faithfully attend church and attentatively listen to the sermons. Though I benefit from well-prepared thought-provoking sermons, I know Sunday sermons are not enough. (This is especially true if your pastor preaches a wonderful salvation message every Sunday morning.) It is our responsibility before God and for others to be diligent in reading, prayerfully contemplating, and working at personally applying God’s word in daily life. We are to bless the Lord, and thereby others!
But we cannot do so with wisdom when comparing ourselves to others whether scoping upscale or down. I share a provocative verse I’ve been contemplating in various translations.

2 Corinthians 10:12

(ASV)  For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with certain of them that commend themselves: but they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.

(CEV)  We won't dare compare ourselves with those who think so much of themselves. But they are foolish to compare themselves with themselves.

(ESV)  Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

(GW)  We wouldn't put ourselves in the same class with or compare ourselves to those who are bold enough to make their own recommendations. Certainly, when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves to themselves, they show how foolish they are.

(ISV)  We would not dare put ourselves in the same class with, or compare ourselves to, those who recommend themselves. Whenever they measure themselves by their own standards or compare themselves among themselves, they show how foolish they are.

(KJV)  For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

(LITV)  For we dare not rank or compare ourselves with some of those commending themselves, but they measuring themselves among themselves and comparing themselves to themselves, are not perceptive.

(MKJV)  For we do not dare to rank or compare ourselves with some of the ones commending themselves. But they, measuring themselves among themselves, and comparing themselves to themselves, are not perceptive.

(NLT) Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!

(Webster)  For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

(YLT)  For we do not make bold to rank or to compare ourselves with certain of those commending themselves, but they, among themselves measuring themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are not wise,

In this area how is it we may contemplate with hope of pleasing God and loving others? By observing and listening to ourselves. This being our verbal remarks, wordless smile or smirk, quiet nods, or poker-faced acquiescence in responses to others’ conversations. If this is candidly done we may be surprised by what we see and hear.
