NOW LET US SHARE BLESSINGS AND CHALLENGES

NOW LET US SHARE BLESSINGS AND CHALLENGES
Tuesday, March 31, 2020

Luke 10:25-29 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? [And then Jesus presented the parable of the good Samaritan, which not only explained but also used “Samaritan”, a people that the audience of Jews looked down upon.]
Galatians 5:22-25 … the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

This morning I am wondering how all of you are getting along with the changes and accompanying challenges. Changes that involve body, soul, and spirit . . . and for the followers of Christ, the manifestations of the applied fruit of the Spirit.
Please do share your challenges and blessed opportunities in fulfilling the comprehensive first two commandments. I’ll wait a few days, then will share the results with all of you knowing that we will all be edified and blessed thereby.

ALL WAS NOT GOOD IN THE BEGINNING

ALL WAS NOT GOOD IN THE BEGINNING
Monday, March 30, 2020

How was the woman a helper suitable for the man?

Genesis 2:18 [ESV] Then the Lord God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.

In Genesis 2:18, we read of the one thing that was not declared "good" in all of God's creation: "Then the LORD God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone.'" The same verse includes God's solution: "I will make him a helper fit for him." Eve was the solution to Adam's deficiency.
Two Hebrew terms in this verse provide important information to better understand the creation of Eve as the first woman. The word translated "helper" is the Hebrew term 'ezer. This word is even used of God, sometimes, noting that He is our Helper (Psalm 115:9-11). We would certainly not view God, as a Helper, as subservient to humans, nor should we understand the role of "helper" in Genesis 2:18 as a position of subservience. The concept of an "ideal partner" seems to convey the thought best.
The second important Hebrew word in this verse, translated "fit" is kenegdo. It literally means "according to the opposite of him." In other words, the focus is on an appropriate match. Eve was not created above or below Adam; she was complementary. The animals Adam had named each had an appropriate companion (Genesis 2:20), and Adam was given a fitting companion as well. Eve was "just right" for him.
Further, God's statement that it was not good for man to be alone implies that Adam was lonely and incomplete by himself. He had been created for relationship, and it is impossible to have relationship alone. With the creation of Eve, Adam experienced the joy of love for another person.
The Bible is unique in its depiction of women's valued status as a complementary companion. No other ancient text from the Middle East offers commentary on the creation of women. It is in the Bible that we learn of the important role women have had since the beginning of human existence. Both man and woman were made in God's image, according to Genesis 1:27, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
The apostle Paul refers to Genesis when he says, "A man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh" (Ephesians 5:31). Husband and wife are to live as one, united in love for God and for one another, modeling the love Christ has for His bride, the Church.

IT IS WRITTEN

IT IS WRITTEN
Sunday, March 29, 2020

Matthew [ESV] 4:1-11 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Christ frequently answered question or criticism with questions and/or Scripture. I wish I could have the right answer and give them with thinking. But too often my mouth gets ahead of my brain and I say the wrong thing.
On the occasions when I do remember – I’ve found that if I ask, “Do you believe the Bible?”, that most people will say “Yes.” When they say they do believe the Bible, and then just tell them what the Bible says and if I then know, where to find it. If I don’t know I get my concordance and show them. There is no valid argument against the Word of God.
I pray for the love and wisdom to always be my answers according to God’s Holy Word.

PSALM 16

ON THE BLESSED SIDE OF GOD’S BOUNDARY LINES
Friday, March 27, 2020

Psalm [ESV] 16 [A Miktam (engraved poem) of David.]
Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you."
As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.
The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

HE WENT TO THE DOGS

HE WENT TO THE DOGS
Thursday, March 26, 2020

Luke [ESV] 16:19-31 [Jesus taught] There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' …

From my elders’ lips, the pronouncement “He’s gone to the dogs.” meant that as the result of choosing wretched lifestyle (“The bottle, you know.” et al), a man had gone downhill to financial poverty.
But poverty doesn’t always mean lack of funds, does it?
The purple and linen clad rich man was obviously not lacking in assets.
Considering that one custom of conspicuous consumption in his day was to keep a kennel of pampered hounds. Possibly the same dogs that licked sickly beggar Lazarus as he lay at the rich man’s gate hoping for sustenance from his table or tray?
If so, it gives whole new meaning to “Gone to the dogs.”
Matthew Henry, Bible commentary writer, penned ‘He fared deliciously and sumptuously every day. His table was furnished with all the varieties and dainties that nature and art could supply; his side-table richly adorned with plate; his servants, who waited at table, in rich liveries; and the guests at his table, no doubt, such as he thought graced it. Well, and what harm was there in all this? It is no sin to be rich, no sin to wear purple and fine linen, nor to keep a plentiful table, if a man's estate will afford it. No[r] are we told that he got his estate by fraud, oppression, or extortion, no, nor that he was drunk, or made others drunk; but, [1.] Christ would hereby show that a man may have a great deal of the wealth, and pomp, and pleasure of this world, and yet lie and perish forever under God's wrath and curse. We cannot infer from men's living great either that God loves them in giving them so much, or that they love God for giving them so much; happiness consists not in these things. [.2] That plenty and pleasure are a very dangerous and to many a fatal temptation to luxury, and sensuality, and forgetfulness of God and another world. This man might have been happy if he had not had great possessions and enjoyments. [3.] That the indulgence of the body, and the ease and pleasure of that, are the ruin of many a soul, and the interests of it. It is true, eating good meat and wearing good clothes are lawful; but it is true that they often become the food and fuel of pride and luxury, and so turn into sin to us. [4.] That feasting ourselves and our friends, and, at the same time, forgetting the distresses of the poor and afflicted, are very provoking to God and damning to the soul. The sin of this rich man was not so much his dress or his diet, but his providing only for himself. ... The rich man kept a kennel of hounds, it may be, or other dogs, for his diversion, and to please his fancy, and these were fed to the full, when poor Lazarus could not get enough to keep him alive. Note, Those will have a great deal to answer for hereafter that feed their dogs, but neglect the poor. And it is a great aggravation of the uncharitableness of many rich people that they bestow that upon their fancies and follies which would supply the necessity, and rejoice the heart, of many a good Christian in distress. Those offend God, nay, and they put a contempt upon human nature, that pamper their dogs and horses, and let the families of their poor neighbours starve.”
Though we haven’t had a dog since 84’. . .  dogless, I could still go to the dogs, couldn’t I?
Like ya’ll, I’m still truckin’ along, bothmpart of he scenery and watching the scenery, being challenged and learning every mile of the way.  EBB4

Romans [MKJV] 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, "For Your sake we are killed all the day long. We are counted as sheep of slaughter." But in all these things we more than conquer through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Eternal security, once saved, always saved, is factual by and in Logos; the Word living (Jn.1:1) and written (2Tim.3:16; 2Pet.1:20).
Using verifying verses and passages in Scripture I have written of this blessed truth numerous times.
Today I present an emotional expression from Paul that reflects his deep concern for his people, the Jews – and also speaks of eternal security.

Romans [MKJV] 9:1-4 I [Paul] tell the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great heaviness and continual pain in my heart. For I myself was wishing to be accursed from Christ for my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites; to whom belong the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the Law, and the service of God, and the promises;

In light of all else Paul wrote on the topic of blessed assurance, he passionately declared but if it could be . . . fully knowing it could not.
Reading God’s Word from Genesis through Revelation, as with the great Apostle Paul, I know there is nothing that will rescind God’s covenant of eternal life for those trusting Him.
Of this I am certain. Are you?  EBB4 (August 19, 2014)

PS: Trusting Jesus for salvation, but still not certain, say so and I will give you more proofs from God’s Word for it is a terrible thing to live in hindering doubt.

THE WRATH OF GOD?

THE WRATH OF GOD?
Tuesday, March 24, 2020

Romans [ESV] 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

This morning I’ve been asked if I think this virus is God’s judgment upon us for the way the USA now lives?
Not being a prophet or insider I cannot give a timely answer. I can, however, present comment Biblically and as a Christian observer.
1.       Yes, God’s record, especially in the Old Testament, shows that He has and does exact judgment.
2.       The rule of CAUSE & EFFECT may also be a factor. For instance, the wholesale practice of abortion effected/effects relationships, our workforce, economy, national debt, taxes, the Social Security system etc.
3.       “pandemic” is in, “plague” is out.
4.       What is happening is not to our nation, but to nations. Plural.
5.       The biblical record shows God giving opportunity to embrace godliness (repent) and effects subside.
6.       We should be wary of Adamic blame-shifting.
7.       Your thoughts?

FOUR QUESTIONS

FOUR QUESTIONS
Tuesday, December 29, 2009

Matthew MKJV 16:13-15 And coming into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked His disciples, saying, Who do men say Me to be, the Son of Man? 14 And they said, Some say, John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. 15 He said to them, But who do you say I am?

Awoke with four questions plain on my mind’s chalkboard:
1.     What do you think of God?
2.     What do you think of Jesus?
3.     What do you think of Jesus Christ?
4.     What do you think of Lord Jesus Christ?
Thinking for a moment, I realized that the order of the questions is an escalation in challenge; challenge that can make one increasingly uncomfortable or at peace.
Next my thoughts went to how I’ve grown accustomed to frequently awaking with chalkboard-like experience. I do not consider myself unique in this, believing that it happens to everyone at times during the day; God’s Holy Spirit personally messaging believer and unbeliever alike; the believer, from inside; the unbeliever, from outside; to both appealing that they trust Him.
If we stop and take time to heed the messages and ponder them, they will continue coming. Read, study, ponder, and act upon The Word living (Jn.1:1)and written (2Tim.3:16-17; Heb.4:12), and the messages will continue to arrive and expansively do so.
Get busy with the chores of the day or continue in them, not giving God place, the messages remain unread. Flip or erase the chalkboard often enough and we diminish not just the messages but The Writer’s influence in our life, leaving us wondering or even blaming . . . “Where is God when I need Him the most?!!”
Our lives are filled with tasks as were those that we consider living in slower times. (Ours also crowded with the many options of affluent techno society.) Please take note that those that lived successfully by Jehovah’s measure stopped to listen, ponder, and act thereupon.
Oh, and another thing I’ve learned -- don’t sit around waiting for a burning bush or Gabriel . . . it’s much simpler than that. We have the message in hand.

PLACE OF WORSHIP

PLACE OF WORSHIP
Sunday, March 22, 2020

Romans [ESV] 12:1-3 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Ephesians 4:21-24 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

By cooperation and mandate the church, God’s John 1:12 family, I scattered outside of places of worship, buildings. Due to my vulnerabilities, caring about flattening the curve, and the concerned urging of family and friends, due to respondent self-quarantine I’ve missed 3 Sundays of congregating to worship. And obviously there will be more absences.
But is worship to be only on certain day(s) or at specific designed place?
The primary when and where of worship is spelled out in Romans 12:1-3, meaning that those that are practitioners thereof and therein are presently and positionally worshipping whenever and wherever they are. Even doing so while socially isolated.

BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER

Ephesians_4:32  Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Blessings in the Walmart Checkout
by Susannah B. Lewis, author of Can't Make This Stuff Up!
The kids are out of school until April and I needed the essentials. Yes, even toilet paper. But one package — not 18. Walmart had closed aisles and pushy patrons. I was ill as a hornet and overwhelmed and The Baby barely fit in my overflowing cart.

I illegally grabbed some paper towels from a closed aisle and went to check out. My cart was so full I was having to put bagged items on the floor and back in the cart that wasn't even empty yet. I knew I was going to need another cart to hold everything — and another set of hands to push it to my car in the pouring rain.

And there he was — a man in his sixties got behind me in line as I frantically loaded the conveyor belt. He said, "Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world."

"Amen!" I said throwing corn dogs on the counter.

"Looks like you're going to need another cart," he said and nodded to his — his cart that only held one t-shirt.

Who needs a cart for one t-shirt!? It was like manna straight from Heaven.

"I'm going to push it to your car, too. Don't say no. Don't rob me of my blessing."

I nearly cried right there. I needed a cart. I needed someone to push it. And despite my horrible attitude all morning, the Lord provided it.

I paid for my two carts of groceries and said, "I'm buying that t-shirt."

"No. You're not doing that."

"Don't rob me of my blessing," I said.

I pushed the full cart to my car and he followed behind with the other one. The rain poured and the tired baby fussed as I strapped her into her seat and he loaded the things into my car.

"God calls us to be His disciples," he said as he pushed cantaloupes and ice cream into every square inch of my cargo space.

We talked about the Lord and His goodness and before he walked away, he said,

"I'll see you again. If not on this earth then in Heaven."

Yes you will, good sir.

Yes you will.

FROM FAMILY LIFE TODAY

Question: This Coronavirus thing has really thrown me. I feel like I've lost all sense of certainty. No one knows what will happen next. How do we stay sane when we don't know what's lurking around the corner?

Answer: It is not that we have lost our sense of certainty. We have lost our illusion of certainty. We never had it to begin with. This could be majorly unsettling, or amazingly liberating.

This tiny virus of 125 nanometers* has sent the entire world into chaos. All of our plans are up in the air, markets are going crazy, entire countries shutting down, and we have no clue what the future holds.

But that is always the case. We never know what the future holds. We only think we do, and keep getting surprised when things don't pan out the way we expected. Now the mask is off. We have to admit our vulnerability.

What will happen next? We don't know. Our experts don't know. Our leaders don't know. Only God knows. And that is the point. Only God knows.

Close your eyes and feel the uncertainty, make peace with it, let yourself be taken by it. Embrace your cluelessness. Because in all the confusion there is one thing you know for sure. You are in God's hands.

Keep calm. Panic and fear are also contagious. Take every precaution as advised by health authorities. Wash your hands well. And every time you do, remember whose hands you are in.

*A nanometre is one billionth of a meter.

RIGHTEOUSNESS

RIGHTEOUSNESS
Wednesday, March 18, 2020

Romans [ESV] 4:20-25 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification. (Hab.2:4; Rom.1:17; Gal.3:11; Heb.10:38; Jam.2:23)

Righteousness is required for eternal life. Without righteousness a person remains John 3:18 “condemned already”.
Righteousness cannot be earned in any way; not by keeping the law, good works, being a good parent or family member, nationality, good citizenship, service, neighborliness, contributions, or conferred by mankind. (Rom. 3:10)
Righteousness is not controlled or dispensed by any particular denomination or religion.
Righteousness and its many benefits can only be had when individuals trust the Word living (Jn.1:1) and written (2Tim.3:16; 2Pet.1:20): the written telling us of He that is forever, the Alpha and Omega who alone giving the water of life freely to those that thirst. (Rev.1:8, 11; 21:6, 13)
As ever righteousness is imputed from God upon those faithful, Abraham being a prime example past and present.
Sans God’s imputed righteousness we cannot begin to truly worship Him. (Rom.12:1-3)
This I know. In it I rejoice.

REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR DAY

REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR
Tuesday, March 17, 2020

The day, December7, 1941, that those infamous Japs accomplished a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, I was just 30 days away from my milestone 6th birthday. Of course I recognized the hubbub, but little did I know the changes we would experience beginning immediately. Shifted labor, shortages, laws and rules, rationing, social restrictions reflected in empty parking places etc. . . . that which later came to understand as the galvanizing of American society resulting in both gains and losses. I consider myself among the gainers, WWII contributing for the better to who I am.
This day is no different in that it is nationwide changing lives for better or worse depending on outlook grounded in a realistic worldview or not. For the followers of Christ grounded in the Word there will be spiritual achievement, for “godliness with contentment is great gain,” (1Tim6:6)

FEAR NOT

FEAR NOT

Sunday, March 15, 2020

Philippians 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

How quickly panic peels away the veneer of complacency in society; March Madness sans basketball and toilet paper! Seats unoccupied and occupied involved.
