INDICATION OF AUTHENTIC FAITH
2Corinthians [ESV] 13:5 Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!
When we trust the Word, written (2Tim.3:16; 3Tim.2:14-16; 2Pet.1:20) and living (Jn.1:1), there are indicators. Indicators that are identified throughout Scripture. The past few days I’ve been thinking about this matter as I consider my journey this side of heaven. Three in particular keep coming to mind.
·
Jesus explaining that “every tree is known by its
own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes
from a bramble bush.” (Lk.6:44)
·
James explaining that our mouth is an indicator
of our heart, writing “Does a fountain send forth at the same hole the sweet
and the bitter? Can the fig tree, my brothers, bear olive berries; or a
vine, figs? So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.” (Jam.3:11-12)
· Peter explaining that suffering the grief of unjust criticism proves our faith, penning “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.“ (1Pet.1:6-7)
How wonderful it
is that our Father in heaven has not left His John 1:12 children bumbling about
wondering about authentic faith.
