FORGOTTEN SERMONS
Sunday, June 05, 2016
Romans ISV 10:17 Consequently,
faith comes from listening, and listening comes through the word of Christ.
This morning I’ll hear yet another sermon.
Have you ever been asked to recount Sunday’s
sermon, or other sermons? Or possibly you’ve missed church for some bona fide
reason and asked your spouse to recount the sermon?
In discussing this through the years,
including preachers I’ve asked including their sermons, the answers for the
most part come under the heading of Forgotten Sermons.
Using simple arithmetic I figure I’ve heard
at least seven thousand five hundred sermons and even more Bible lessons plus
the thousands I’ve studied for and delivered; and yet I must confess that I am
hard pressed to detail very many of them.
So why bother going to church and Bible
study? Why invest in preparing and delivering sermons and Bible studies?
Consider this: How many lectures sat under,
homework done, exams taken, do you remember from your secular education? But
how much of it, without crediting or thinking, do you use, with yourself and
others benefiting from every day? At some time or another most or all of it!
And so it is with God’s Word, Truth delivered
in sermon and lesson; remembering verbatim or portions not being the preeminent
work; the preeminent affecting and resultant effect is that we have been
educated and edified in The Way; now changed people, ever being changed,
forever changed here and in preparation for eternity.
How wonderful are the works of God in His
children!
