WHY WAR?

WHY WAR?
Wednesday, November 30, 2016

“Why war?” is plainly answered in Scripture: it is because of the base nature of man wanting his way, wanting more. Sound familiar? It should, for dissatisfaction with harmony, wanting more was core issue in the original sinning Eve and Adam. (Gen.3:1-6) And, as with all hostilities of small or large scope, there was and still is always terrible casualty -- the price of war. (Gen.3:7-24)
David, warrior king, cried out about the wasted cruel futility or war. (2Sam.1:25-27)
Sometimes war involves crime most personal. (2Sam.11:1-27)
Jesus spoke about war. (Mt.24:6-8; Mk.13:6-8)
James, in chapter 4, plainly explains the reason for war; and that we make serious error when going to war against God.
In KJV “war” is mentioned 225 times in 220 verses; “battle” 170 in 163 verses.
“peace” is mentioned in one context or another 429 times in 400 verses.
Which will make for the more profitable word study? Why war, or why peace?
If not in denial or clouded with emotionalism, “Why war?” is easily comprehended.
“Why peace?” requires considerable study and difficulty in application. A consequence of original sin leaving man with base ego-centric nature it is easier to strike with countenance, body language, tongue, pen, or arms than to be a blessed peacemaker.
Knowing my bent, I choose “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.” (ASV Phil.4:7)  Saying with Paul “Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers [and sisters], I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.” (Phil.3:12-16)

ONE VERSUS TWO

ONE VERSUS TWO
Tuesday, November 29, 2016

A part of my day includes regimen. Prayerful reading, study, and meditation, writing out thoughts, editing and then going through the mechanics of publishing via e-mail, blogging, Facebook, and logging for 22 page mailings to postal subscribers (inmates and outmates). And then there’s the brief time ingesting or attempting to do so from my free daily Dictionary.com subscription. The matter is not simply, or with difficulty learning word meanings and spelling. The exercise quite often results in looking from the word to the Word. This morning I share with you the one word that led me to do an e-Sword concordance search and then rejoicing in two words from the Word.
Dictionary.com’s 2016 Word of the Year: Xenophobia
November 28, 2016 by: Dictionary.com Comments Off
At Dictionary.com we aim to pick a Word of the Year that embodies a major theme resonating deeply in the cultural consciousness over the prior 12 months. This year, some of the most prominent news stories have centered around fear of the “other.” Fear is an adaptive part of human evolutionary history and often influences behaviors and perceptions on a subconscious level. However, this particular year saw fear rise to the surface of cultural discourse. Because our users’ interest in this overarching theme emerges so starkly for one specific word in our trending lookup data, xenophobia is Dictionary.com’s 2016 Word of the Year.
The word xenophobia is actually relatively new, and only entered English in the late 1800s. It finds its roots in two Greek words, xénos meaning “stranger, guest,” and phóbos meaning “fear, panic.”
Dictionary.com defines xenophobia as “fear or hatred of foreigners, people from different cultures, or strangers.” It can also refer to fear or dislike of customs, dress, and cultures of people with backgrounds different from our own.
Xenophobia Lookups
Within the recent past, we can date user interest in the term xenophobia to April 2015, when there was a massive surge in lookups that was larger than any of the peaks seen in 2016. This spike in lookups was connected to attacks on foreign workers and overall rising xenophobia in South Africa. While lookups for xenophobia in the US also rose during that time, it was lookups from Dictionary.com’s worldwide users that made this particular surge so significant.
The largest spike in our data for the term xenophobia this year occurred on June 24 with a 938% increase in lookups—that’s hundreds of users looking up the term each hour. This was the day after the UK voted to leave the European Union as the result of a much debated referendum, also known as Brexit. Another lookup trend that was influenced by the Brexit vote: user interest in the term hate crime soared in the month of July as newspapers covered an increase in crimes motivated by prejudice in post-Brexit UK. In October, the British Home Office reported a 41% increase in hate crimes the month following the EU referendum.
Soon after Brexit, the second largest surge in lookups this year for the term xenophobia leads us to the 2016 US presidential race. On June 29, President Obama gave a speech in which he expressed concern over the use of the term populism to describe Donald Trump’s political rhetoric. Obama insisted that this was not an example of populism, but of “nativism or xenophobia.” The biggest spike in lookups for the term populism occurred on June 30 as a result of Obama’s speech.  http://blog.dictionary.com/xenophobia/?param=email&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=WOTY%202016:%20Xenophobia&utm_term=wordoftheday

A BODY OUGHTA KNOW

A BODY OUGHTA KNOW
Monday, November 28, 2016

Dear fellow travelers,
I’m continuing to review some of my past morning thoughts. I’ve selected the following to this day share again.
To serve Him all our days,
Ed Bullock 4th

+++++++

Colossians 2:2-4 … that their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and to all riches of the full assurance of the understanding, to the full knowledge of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. And I say this that not anyone should beguile you with enticing words.

Though I can’t remember the last time I heard it, “A body ought to know …” was one of the cultural sayings I grew up with. For those of you never exposed to Far Eastern dialogue, it speaks of knowledge necessary to get along in life.
Another was “There oughta be a law!” but I’ll say no more on it because in the ensuing decades our legislators listened and enacted trainloads of laws, rules, and regulations.
There are many things we do need to know to live well.
During the early months of WWII 12,000 military were killed. During that same time period over 6,400 USA civilians lost their lives working in armament and munitions factories. This is knowledge that may or may not make a difference in our life.
There is however information that is essential to everyone in order to live beyond temporal plodding.
King Solomon pointed out this indispensable life-truth: “The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; to know wisdom and instruction; to recognize the words of understanding; to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and uprightness; to give sense to the simple, knowledge and judgment to the young man; the wise hears and increases learning; and understanding ones get wisdom; to understand a proverb and its meaning; the words of the wise, and their acute sayings. The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction. My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother; for they shall be an ornament of grace to your head and chains around your neck.” (Pr.1:1-9)
For the Christian disciple of Christ, how is this implemented?
First, by regular reading and studying what Jehovah God says in His Word, the Bible: “Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. But shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. … All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work. (1Tim.2:15-16; 3:16-17)
Secondly, living with a God’s Word life-view; meaning in every question, problem, pleasure, $$ management, choosing friends, selecting a spouse, work, challenge, desire, temptation, et al . . . we ask “What does God’s say on the matter?” and if we don’t know the answer we find out by topically searching the Word of God (Holy Bible) or asking an 2Corninthians 5:4-21 active agent of reconciliation
Thirdly, knowing what God says on the matter, we wisely implement the knowledge.
Hear James as he reminds: “Who is wise and knowing among you? Let him show his works by his good conduct with meekness of wisdom.” (Jam.3:13)
Dear fellow sojourners, these are things a body definitely oughta know.

A SINGLE THOUGHT OF WORSHIP

A SINGLE THOUGHT OF WORSHIP
Sunday, November 27, 2016

Today there will be many words spoken and sung about God. As will many others everywhere, I will participate in a Sunday School class and listen to another sermon. Sometimes though, worship comes down to a single thought impressing upon one’s soul: “Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.” (Ps.90:2)
Reflecting on this powerful truth, consider that everything in the universe has a beginning and will eventually end, everything except God. Such rules of limitations don’t apply to Him, because He as Sovereign Creator and Sustainer made them.
Before there was time, God was there; when time is no more, He will be there.

Presently, He is here.  EBB4  (Sunday, October 12, 2014)

NEITHER GLOOMY OR GLAD

NEITHER GLOOMY OR GLAD
Friday, November 25, 2016

John 3:1-3  There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Our citizenship is in the kingdom of heaven, meanwhile we attend to serving our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20

I’ve been enjoying more physical activity this week in preparation for a weekend guest and our Family Thanksgiving Gathering here on Saturday.  Prepping for and painting for one. Think not that I used ladders. I instead made use of Height Facilitator Devices with steps not rungs. Hawaiian Flower hue pleases my eyes. Applying it, cleaning, junking, stowing, and organizing had the added benefit of 3 pound loss.
Being a year round perspire I took cool-down rehydration breaks watching authoritative political commentators of the “We know better for we are educated and enlightened.” ilk.
One thing repeatedly said or implied was that all Americans are either sad or gloating.
Per my Dad’s teaching I heard a red flag flapping on the “all”, that he taught me is a presumptuous fools’ word.
Secondly I personally am not cheerless or cheerful, depressed or elated, over the outcome of our most recent USA presidential election. Why not?
Whatever of kings, tsars, presidents has been, will be, or is . . . the most important things of life are unchanged.
·         I AM THAT I AM is still the absolute Sovereign. Ex.3:14
·         My and other believers’ John 1:12 present and eternal family membership is unaltered.
·         My and other believers’ Philippians 3:20 present and eternal citizenship is unchanged.
·         Our attitude is not in response to changing socio-political events. Phil.4:11-13
·         Our life is centered in consistent participatory Christian service above results. Jam.1:8, 4:8
·         Though as salt and light we vote, there is but one king ours! Mt.5:13; Mk.9:50; Dan.2:37; 1Tim.6:15; Rev.17:14; 19:16
  Rejoice, rejoice evermore!

THANKSGIVING IS NOT A DRUMSTICK

THANKSGIVING IS NOT A DRUMSTICK
Wednesday, November 23, 2016

Psalm 18:49 Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.
1Thessalonians 5:16-22 Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Today’s title is a silly one, for Christian or not understands that thanksgiving is not about what is in hand . . . it’s from what is in our heart. A thankful attitude producing words and actions is more than at any other time evidenced during times of difficulty, diminishment, or loss. These events are experienced small, mild, moderate, or intense by one and all. Experiencing such events tests us presenting option to shrink or grow.
For the followers of the John 1:1 Word, Lord Jesus Christ, Logos living and written is our guide; for we as His people and sheep of His pasture are to give thanks for ever: showing forth praise to all generations. (Ps.79:13) For thoughtful consideration I share my personal morning review.
First, using eSword concordance I found 35 OT verses and 36 NT verses containing “thanks”. As an exercise I reviewed them all. For me the most provocative being 1Chronicles 16:41 showing that people were chosen to give thanks, and in the NT reminding me that it is this “thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.” (1Pet.2:19-20)
Then, Jesus’ teaching: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.” (Mt.6:9-13)
Jesus later declaring: "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.” (ESV Mt.11:25-26; Lk.10:21)
And Paul penned an important reminder: “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (ESV Heb.13-16)
And one of my all time favorites pertaining to our being God’s 2Corinthians 5:14-21 agents of reconciliation: “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.” (2Cor.2:14)
So, whether drumstick in hand or not, let us give thanks. (For our family gathering it will include both turkey and my delicious baked ham glazed with my secret formula.)

STANDARD?

STANDARD?
Tuesday, November 22, 2016

John 17:17 [Jesus prayed] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

For all you youngsters out there, did you know that until recently that stick-shift (Vertical rod on floor or horizontal one on steering column that must be repositioned in coordination with pushing and releasing clutch pedal on floor in order to change gears from low to high and back again.) was always referred to by dealers and drivers as “Standard transmission”? By a decade ago, though still the nomenclature, it had become a half-truth. By early next year it will be quarter-truth and likely dropped from automotive lexicon and relegated to historical accounts. But so far as the big picture called life, it matters little or naught beyond old coots boasting that they learned to drive on stick shift. (Did I ever tell you that my Dad insisted I first accomplish smooth grind-less shifting of non-synchromesh stick in our 1 ½ ton stake body truck before I was allowed to drive his Rocket 88 Olds?)
There is however truth that is 100% truth; the eternal standard, the Word of God (Logos). Though it is God’s absolute standard, and is so with the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, it is less applicably so than ever before in this republic, these United States of America. In stating this I need not list proof for reviewing our nation’s history and for those of us that have lived for many decades here, it is obvious. I speak not of just Christians, for atheists and agnostics attest to, even applauding this past and current trend.
Also, have we not heard or at least noticed a new standard to American vocabulary: Post-Christian. A term that describes today’s USA society well, but shall never be classification for those of us living in Sovereign Jehovah God’s blessed assurance; sanctified in and by His standard . . . “… knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, silver or gold, from your vain manner of life handed down from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot; indeed having been foreknown before the foundation of the world, but revealed in the last times for you, those believing in God through Him, He who raised Him up from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope might be in God. Purifying your souls in the obedience of the truth through the Spirit to unfeigned love of the brothers, love one another fervently out of a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the living Word of God, and abiding forever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of men as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls out, but the Word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the Word preached as gospel to you.” (MKJV 1Pet.1:18-25)

GREATLY PLEASING GOD

THINKING AND ACTING GREATLY PLEASING TO GOD
Monday, November 21, 2016

Romans 12:1-3 [NLT] And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Because of the privilege and authority God has given me [Apostle Paul], I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

Pastor Scott, teaching our temporarily combined classes Sunday, presented 3 “Greats” to think and act out. Three directives from the Word for living in loving others inside and outside of the congregation:

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT –   When the crowds heard him [Jesus], they were astounded at his teaching. But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” (Mt.22:33-40)
THE GREAT COMPASSION – [Jesus explained] “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me. “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’ “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.” (Mt.25:34-46)
THE GREAT COMMISSION – Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him—but some of them doubted! Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Mt.28:16-20)

Finally . . . if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (KJV Phil.4:8)

AUTHENTIC WORSHIP

AUTHENTIC WORSHIP
Sunday, November 20, 2016

Psalm [ESV] 119:10-16 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth. In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
John 4:24 [Jesus explained] God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

How do we know what authentic worship is?
Am I truly worshipping in the way pleasing to God? (Not pleasing = Not worshipping.)
Always striving for Acts 17:11 Berean nobility, we look to God’s Word for answers.
What does “I AM THAT I AM” (Ex.3:14), the Word, Logos, Living and written, say on the topic? Or do we without personal question or individual Timothy 2:15 study and analysis lazily rely on tradition, our own ideas, or how worship makes ME feel?
We know that “exceeding reverence” of Jehovah God Almighty is essential ingredient for authentic worship. For “Fear is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Pr.1:7; 9:10) This veneration can never be apart from genuine “Thy will be done” trusting that His will may be preservation, diminishment, or demise.
God clearly explains worship throughout His Word (written) and by the Word (Lord Jesus Christ). We would do well to not simply read but search from Genesis through Revelation, of itself being worship exercise, but in the interest of our getting to other responsibilities this day, I’ve chosen one summarizing passage: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.” (ESV Rom.12:1-3)
We must not let ego, self-esteem, it feels good for me, get in the way of God’s utmost all-wise supplying. His measure is the ultimate standard, not ambience or sophistication. Reality is as Jesus pointed out to Hebrews; it is possible to be very religious and yet not be worshipping Him.
What does the Word say? What is the whole counsel of God? Are we reverencing deliverance to heaven sans recognition of freedom from past “condemned already”? (Jn. Chapter 3) Do we tell others His Truth as an act of worship?
And then there is praising in enumerating and pondering the mercies of God whether congregating with brethren or surrounded by hell-bound unbelievers. Counting “the mercies of God” is very much worship pleasing to our Lord and King:
·         Unearned and undeserved blessings.
·         His imputed righteousness unto everlasting redemption.
·         Justification!
·         Sanctification.
·         Freedom indeed.
·         Available daily deliverance from self.
·         His eternal love.
·         His daily and continuing grace.
·         Christ’s ongoing intercession.
·         His comforting and convicting Holy Spirit.
·         Blessed assurance. Absolute eternal security.
·         Faith that is not inert.
·         His provision for strength. (For those interested I’ve a study file on the topic.)
·         Joy unspeakable.
·         Forgiveness always available.
·         John 1:12 family empowerment.
·         A “sound mind” apart from fearful living.
·         Wisdom immeasurable. “the mind of Christ”
·         Training in life skills, especially patience.
·         Position of ambassador of reconciliation.
·         Equipping to serve Him and our fellows.
And much much more; all of which leads us to whenever wherever to “present our bodies a living [quickened, alive!!] and holy sacrifice.”
To serve Him all our days,
