GENERAL TO SPECIFIC
Matthew [ESV] 18 At that time the
disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and
said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and
become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. …
Ask Jesus a general
“Who” question and He gives a specific “unless you” response. The disciples
asked minor question about “in the kingdom” and Jesus spoke of the larger
significance of if without childlike faith “you will never enter the kingdom of
heaven.” Consider the record in John 3, Nicodemus asking Jesus about his
credentials and power . . . Jesus responding significantly as he did later to
the disciples; this manner customary in Jesus’ ministry then and presently.
How many times do
we see and/or ask small or narrowly and miss God’s large picture and/or answer
given?
