PROPITIATION
“propitiation”, now there’s a word you don’t
hear very often these days, especially since a decade or two ago when the “We
mustn’t use big theological words to talk to people.” movement was fostered. Consequently
many are ignorant of important definitions. An additional problem is that many
of the grand old scholars spoke and wrote the old vocabulary, keying to KJV, now
making research a bit more difficult for those interested.
An example is concordances. Young’s,
Cruden’s, and Strong’s (My preference) are all keyed to KJV language. The great
old encyclopedic information is no different. Another favorite of mine,
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE is a standard research tool in
my e-Sword setup), which contains much language of yesteryear.
This is not to say you can’t learn by using modern
study Bibles and writings. I just consider it more difficult.
Back to today’s word, using concordance with
Strong’s numbers (In my e-Sword setup.) we see propitiation is 3 times in KJV: Rom_3:25 WhomG3739

Moving cursor onto Strong’s numbers by
“propitiation”, I find: G2435; ἱλαστήριον; hilastērion;
hil-as-tay'-ree-on Neuter of a derivative of G2433; an expiatory (place or thing),
that is, (concretely) an atoning victim, or (specifically) the lid
of the Ark (in the Temple): - mercyseat, propitiation.
And G2434; ἱλασμός; hilasmos; hil-as-mos';
atonement,
that is, (concretely) an expiator: - propitiation.
Going to Webster’s 1828 dictionary (Also in my e-Sword setup.), a
reference book written by a Christian man that spoke the language, we see: PROPITIATION, n. propisia'shon.
1. The act
of appeasing wrath and conciliating the favor of an offended person; the act of
making propitious.
2. In theology, the atonement or atoning
sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to
sinners. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of men. Rom 3. 1 John 2.
Conclusion: Propitiation is
God’s great act of love without which we would be eternally condemned, lost now
and forever!
