ENTHRONEMENT
Matthew 22:34-38 … when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
“Here are these
four boys from Liverpool. They’re rude, they’re profane, they’re vulgar, and
they’ve taken over the world.” [said] Derek Taylor, the Beatles press officer. “It’s
as though they founded a new religion. They’re completely anti-Christ. I mean,
I’m anti-Christ as well, but they’re so anti-Christ they shock me, which isn’t
an easy thing. I’m obsessed with them. Isn’t everybody? I’m obsessed with their
honesty. And people that like them most are the people who should be outraged
the most. In Australia, for example, each time we’d arrive at an airport, it
was as if de Gaulle had landed, or better yet, the Messiah. The routes were
lined solid, cripples threw away their sticks [crutches], sick people rushed up
to the car as if a touch from one of the boys would make them well again. It
was as if some savior had arrived.”
Taylor paused, “The only thing left for the Beatles, he said, “Is to go on a healing tour.” (August 8, 1984)
Definitely a
brash claim then for an entertainment group that even some Christians were passionate
fans of. And yet before them, after, and now . . . there are professing
Christians that avidly adore some athletes, team, entertainer, politician, far
above attention to glorifying Lord Jesus Christ.
Beware of misbegotten
loyalties!
