THE PEACE OF CHRIST

THE PEACE OF CHRIST
Friday, July 31, 2020

Philippians [MKJV Highlighting mine.] 4:4-9 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, Rejoice! Let your moderation be known to all men. The Lord is at hand. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, my brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think on these things. Do those things which you have also learned and received and heard and seen in me. And the God of peace shall be with you.
1Peter [MKJV] 5:6-10 Therefore be humbled under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your anxiety onto Him, for He cares for you. Be sensible and vigilant, because your adversary the Devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking someone he may devour; whom firmly resist in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions in the world are being completed in your brotherhood. But the God of all grace, He calling us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a little, He will perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

Dear fellow travelers,
I’m again thinking about the authentic personal freedom that Christ alone provides for our reliant accepting or independent rejecting unto remaining as we were. (Jn.3:1-18) This of course includes thinking about redemption’s inseparable companion, peace; without authentic personal peace there is no authentic personal freedom, without authentic personal freedom there is no authentic personal peace . . . all otherwise positions are an illusion of peace with freedom. Pax Romana was and Pax Americana is prime examples of “peace the world gives”. Closer to home, family, community, job – peace is strictly a judgment call centered in relative comparisons and incidental ambience.
Jesus said “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. … If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. …  Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. … Do ye now believe? Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (From Jn.8:31-36; 14:27; 16:31-33)
Can we say that we have the authentic personal freedom that Christ alone provides when our life is described by worry, anger, resentment, or angst? Can we say we enjoy authentic personal peace that Christ alone provides when our life is phobic?
By the Word living and written the answer is no.
The answer need not be negative. Trusting Christ for His authentic personal provision of peace with accompanying freedom makes for a life most positive.
If you are living in and by Christ’ personal authentic peace and freedom I rejoice with you.
If you have not yet trusted Christ for His great gifts, with others I am praying for you.
Sincerely,
Edwin Bennett Bullock 4th

HEBREWS 9:27 ALERET

RESILIENT YET FRAGILE
Thursday, July 30, 2020

1Corinthians [GW] 2:4-13 I [Paul] didn't speak my message with persuasive intellectual arguments. I spoke my message with a show of spiritual power so that your faith would not be based on human wisdom but on God's power. However, we do use wisdom to speak to those who are mature. It is a wisdom that doesn't belong to this world or to the rulers of this world who are in power today and gone tomorrow. We speak about the mystery of God's wisdom. It is a wisdom that has been hidden, which God had planned for our glory before the world began. Not one of the rulers of this world has known it. If they had, they wouldn't have crucified the Lord of glory. But as Scripture says: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love him." God has revealed those things to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches everything, especially the deep things of God. After all, who knows everything about a person except that person's own spirit? In the same way, no one has known everything about God except God's Spirit. Now, we didn't receive the spirit that belongs to the world. Instead, we received the Spirit who comes from God so that we could know the things which God has freely given us. We don't speak about these things using teachings that are based on intellectual arguments like people do. Instead, we use the Spirit's teachings. We explain spiritual things to those who have the Spirit.

There’s this tough little ocean critter that is super alert and can travel 800 body lengths in one second. (It should be easier now than when I weighed 250, but I’m not sure I can travel 8 body lengths in a second these days!) The copepod is one of the fastest creatures in God’s creation, making it able to escape most hungry jaws. It cannot however escape the slimy maw of one of the slowest creatures on earth.
The Mnemiopsis leidyi, “jellyfish” to most of us, without brain or sight, is one the slowest creatures in nature. So slow that the copepod can’t sense it approaching and winds up being part of the creepy creeping critters’ 10 times its body weight daily diet. (My choice of words is result of being stung [plural] as a boy while enjoying the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.)
These jellyfish have been and continue to be increasing in population and are difficult to eradicate. Where they thrive they have interrupted the food chain and devastated fisheries. In some seafood dependent areas this could be like Ireland’s potato famine years ago resulting in sickness, disease, death, and human population shifts that stress or overburden neighboring local resources. In the 1980’s the once abundant Black Sea anchovy fishery was ravaged. Other areas are now being effected.
Life is durable and yet vulnerable. Consider our body. Consider our mind. Consider our spirit.
All can only be kept in optimum possible health with constant alertness and movement, and even then we may be overcome by creeper or creepiness. And in spite of our best efforts eventually we waste and die anyway. (Heb.9:27)
There is but one workable escaping presently and future: Trusting God now in this dangerous environment. (Jn.6:27; 2Cor.1:22; Eph.1:13; 4:30)
God says "At the right time I heard you. On the day of salvation I helped you." Listen, now is God's acceptable time! Now is the day of salvation!” (GW 2Cor.6:2)

PROPER LIGHTING

PROPER LIGHTING
Tuesday, July 28, 2020

John 1:1-5; 8:12; 11:10 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. … Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. … But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.
Matthew 5:14-16  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

There are times when we feel surrounded by problems and worse yet, ever problematic near loved ones. For some folks this statement describes their life most or all of the time. Sometimes coping, getting by and scraping thru is the best that seems available. And then there is the grace of hope; the visualizing of light at the end of tunnels. But even such hope is limited relief as you discover that the light is the headlamp on a burden weighted freight train coming at you.
I much prefer proper radiance where I am working, not light as some glimmer afar.
What we need is not a light at the end of the tunnel, but light with us in the tunnel. God provides this light, The Light, Jesus; Light not only with believers, but Light within. (1Cor.6:19; 1Thes.5:19) Hear Christ’ words as recorded by Luke (GNB 11:36), “If your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be bright all over, as when a lamp shines on you with its brightness."
With proper Light-ing we see life, yea, even our life when seeming under siege darkly, quite different; light in and with eternal godly perspective, illuminated by God with and in everlasting purpose.
Once accepting and personally making blessed use of proper lighting, we are then in maturation and adult responsibility to be light to others, just as was and is Jesus. (Jn.8:12; Mt.5:14-16)
Let us determine not to unnecessarily stumble in darkness, but to come to The Light, use The Light to see clearly the path, and be the light for others.
I close my morning thoughts with the words of the Psalmist, may they be ours to know and hold tightly, “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (119:103-105)

JCAH

J.C.A.H.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.  While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh. (Mt.25:1-13)

My friends who still work at the hospital tell me J.C.A.H. is coming this month and they are working overtime to get everything ready.
For those of you who do not know, the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals is an organization that can be hired by hospitals to send a team to inspect the hospital’s practices, record keeping etc. Their approval is not required for a hospital to operate, but “J.C.A.H. approved” does look good after the name of the hospital.
The problem is that, instead of always being ready for inspection the employees let things go and actually break rules until a letter comes warning them that J.C.A.H. is coming. Then they work like mad to get ready.
There will be no warning when Lord Jesus Christ returns! We must live and work each day so that we are ready no matter when He comes!
Leslie Nivens (12/12/1928-3/1/2020)

PS. To do business with clients, including the US government, the company I worked for was accredited by an international London GB firm. As with Leslie’s account we would scramble when warned of upcoming inspection, updating prints, descriptions, schematics and holding re-education sessions that included how to talk to “these people”. STAPLED

STAPLED
Friday, July 24, 2020

Mentor Darlene N. expressed that there are events “Stapled to our mind.” This I believe more than ever before as I manage elder’ thought life. I was warned by other seniors that this would come to pass and it has. Always a personal trait of mine, I now live an accelerated fuller version of something reminds me of something that reminds me of something else that reminds me of something else …… plus there’s “Where did that come from memories?!”
Many of the memories are wonderful what with now better seeing the Lord’s hand.
But the past, as Paul exhorts in Philippians 3:13-14, must be managed so as to live and serve I n the present . . . or there can be absolutely no fulfillment of Philippians 4:13.

LISTENING

LISTENING
Thursday, July 23, 2020

“Hearing and listening are two different things.” 15 year old student acquaintance

This being what Jesus meant when He said “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” (Mt.11:15; 13:9; Mk.4:9, 23; 7:16)

Even when listening carefully, it can be to other than God.
One of my ongoing experiences as a disciple of Christ is Romans 12:1-3 new thinking as I listen to Him.
Would you believe that I once thought Eve, then Adam, sinned by eating an apple? Then later hearing and believing that it was sex that was the original sin? And that prostitution is the world’s oldest profession?
It wasn’t just these now obvious 3, but many more from family, public school education and other-wise teachers. The latter in the good old days including a Psalm, The Lord’s Prayer, pledge allegiance to the flag quickly done (with JWs stepping out in the hall), followed by hours of instruction including a whole lot of worldly philosophy.
Jesus explained that truly listening is of not just present, but of eternal importance: “Jesus answered them, I told you and you did not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. But you did not believe because you are not of My sheep. As I said to you, My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give to them eternal life, and they shall never ever perish, and not anyone shall pluck them out of My hand.” (Jn.10:25-28)
  Listen!

GOD'S PROVISION FOR ESCAPE

GOD’S WAY OF ESCAPE
Wednesday, July 22, 2020

1Corinthians [NLT] 10:12-13 If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. [As always, please read in context in the translation of your preference.
1Peter chapter 5 … “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” [Prov.3:34-35] So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you….

This morning’s thoughts are on the topic of temptation/testing and “a way to escape” (KJV) and 4 connecting points turning over in mind.
I am not an overt grumbler. I have however been a worrier. For me worrying, anxiety, and the accompanying passive-aggressive anger, though silently done is a form of murmuring - not trusting God’s direction. Deliverance for me came through trusting God with concerns that I could not foresee solutions for. Most concerns never came to pass or passed by without damage. Some He gave solutions for or direction in while trusting Him. Most resulted in lessons recognized upon later reflection. Yet other situations I anticipate clarity to arrive here or beyond death.
Trusting God with my worries was and continues to be centered in His Word, in particular 1Peter 5:6-7. Initialing I dumped on God, but then as I repeatedly pondered I gained increase in strengthening insight; insight that I here present in 4 points realized:
1.       Capability, God’s: There is nothing He does not see, know, or can do as it pleases Him. (Ex.3:14)
2.       Provision, God’s: His merciful love. God alone supplies peace beyond any form this world provides. (Jn.14:27; 16:33)
3.       Capability, ours: We’re initially equipped with further furnishing completely available. (2Tim.3:16-17)
4.       Responsibility, ours: God created us with free will. He doesn’t do it for us. Indeed He shows the way, but He never pushes us onto it. We alone decide to live a distracted life or one of empowered purpose exercised within His provision of personal peace. (Beginning with Adam & Eve a constant truth illustrated throughout God’s Word.)
As a person that too often has learned these things the hard way, I pray you, if not already so will this day benefit from my education.
EBB4

PS. I haven’t worried for a long time. I’m accepting this morning’s thoughts as a Holy Spirit caution against smugness. For though unrecognized by me, I may be in or approaching the borderland of worry and unease. (Jn.14:26-27) And as you know, my life verses are Ps.32:8-9, which means there are times I don’t see the elephant in my room.

RETHINKING AGAIN

RETHINKING, AGAIN
Tuesday, July 21, 2020

Psalm 1:1-6 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
1Timothy 4:8-9 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

It happened again. I had to rethink.
It was one of those “my day” generational mental routes that I notice we all trip on at times; examining problems and framing answers by formula GI, Booms, X, Y, or Z.
I once read that there is no force as powerful as error in a trusted godly person’s mouth. How true is this assertion?
Absolutely bona fide for the Biblical Christian, but of little or no significance to those not looking to The Word, they instead opting for talk show pop psychology, celebrity model, including reality shows to learn how to resolve or win at relationships.
Why must we Christians to be reminded of who we are and how we profess to suppose?
Because our carnal instinct is to protect our self.
Looking to The Word we see life’s two standard modes of assessment, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.” (Prov.3:5-7)
It happened again, I had to rethink. And, yes, not always recognizing or owning my carnality, I shall have to rethink again and again; it being healthy Christian exercise.

TRANSFORMATION VERSUS REGENERATION

TRANSFORMATION VERSUS REGENERATION
Monday, July 20, 2020

Matthew [CEV] 22:34-40 After Jesus had made the Sadducees look foolish, the Pharisees heard about it and got together. One of them was an expert in the Jewish Law. So he tried to test Jesus by asking, "Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law?" Jesus answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and most important commandment. The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, "Love others as much as you love yourself." All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets are based on these two commandments.

As the Apostle John recorded those many years ago, Jesus explained "I tell you for certain that you must be born from above before you can see God's kingdom!" (Jn.3:3)
Dr. Carl McIntire taught that religious transformation sans regeneration through and by Lord Jesus Christ is nothing more than a new suit of clothes on the same old man. This absolute truth inseparable from the fact that love cannot be legislated by God or man.
In spite of these irrefutable truths, the maddening crowds and responding governments in our so-called (and Muslim designated) Christian nation continue to desperately do otherwise; forever attempting to solve man’s problems with man’s ways apart from God and His Word.
Society’s recurring problem deemed a “civil rights” issue is actually the lack of authentically applied Biblical 1Corinthians 13:4-7; Love is kind and patient, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. Love rejoices in the truth, but not in evil. Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting.
Beware marching for justice apart from the Just One. (Acts 10:34)

KEEPING ON

KEEPING ON
Sunday, July 19, 2020

Matthew [CEV] 22:34-40 After Jesus had made the Sadducees look foolish, the Pharisees heard about it and got together. One of them was an expert in the Jewish Law. So he tried to test Jesus by asking, "Teacher, what is the most important commandment in the Law?"  Jesus answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and most important commandment.
The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, "Love others as much as you love yourself." All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets are based on these two commandments.
Hebrews 10:24-15 We should keep on encouraging each other to be thoughtful and to do helpful things. Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord's coming is getting closer.

God encourages gathering together in participation. This participation in worshipping him very much includes encouraging our brothers and sisters of His John 1:12 family.
Ah, but what of these COVID days?!
Temporary closings and cautions have drastically curtailed assembling for worship. However, worship is not limited to assembly, nor should it be – for it really is a personal matter of Jesus’ first commandment.
And neither need we neglect the second, for no one (even government) prohibits us from lovingly encouraging one another via email, texting, postal notes and letters . . . even by telephoning.
  Apart we may be.
  In heart together we are.

FROM DELIVERANCE TO DEDICATION

FROM DELIVERANCE TO DEDICATION?
Friday, July 17, 2020

John [MKJV] 3:15-17 … whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but so that the world might be saved through Him.
Romans 5:6-11 For we yet being without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will with difficulty die for a righteous one, yet perhaps one would even dare to die for a good one. But God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Hebrews 7:24-25 … He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is able also to save to the uttermost those who come unto God by Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them. (Note Jn.14:6)
2Peter 3:9-10 The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness, but is long-suffering toward us, not purposing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat. And the earth and the works in it will be burned up.

God is absolutely able, willing and wanting to save us as individuals or nation, and His Word records this caring and that He has done so, and promises continuance. At times deliverance is obvious, an out of Egypt et al event testified of from one or a multitude of witnesses. Other times deliverance is provided and we don’t even know it happened. (I personally believe we all experience this latter.)
God loves everyone. The ultimate proof of His love for is Jesus.
Indeed so, but what is the proof of our professed and sung love for Him?
Let there be no doubt as to the answer to this life question. Jesus said “If ye love me, keep my commandments. . . . If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. . . . If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.” (KJV Jn.14:15, 23; 15:10)
The Apostle John reiterated this truth in his first letter. “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.” (KJV 1Jn.5:2-3)
God’s love for us is absolute, because it depends on Him.
Our love for Him is not consistent, because it depends on us, and believers are fickle easily distracted John 1:12 family members.
God does not however leave us blowing in the wind. He and His provision are always at hand. This is not our problem. Our problem is between His deliverance and our dedication.

TESTING SPIRITS

JUDGING RIGHTLY: TESTING SPIRITS
Thursday, July 16, 2020

2John [NLT] 1:5-11 I am writing to remind you, dear friends, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning. I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God. But anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ, don’t invite that person into your home or give any kind of encouragement.  Anyone who encourages such people becomes a partner in their evil work.

Examining the above Scripture we learn several critical points in properly judging whether to trust men or not:
·         Vs. 5 & 6 emphasizes Christ’ example and teaching on loving one another; without godly love involving discipleship we can’t have true righteous discernment. Jn.14:13-15.
·         Vs. 7 tells us to beware, for there are many deceivers. Jer.14:14; Mt.7:15; 24:11, 24; Mk.13:22; Lk.6:26; 2Pt.2:1; 1Jn.4:1;Tit.1:10.
·         Vs. 7 presents the essential test to judge by; who and what do they say of Jesus? (Some Christian groups in world consider Him other than God-incarnate.) Jn1:1, 14; Heb.2:17; 1Jn.4:2.
·         Vs. 8 explains that we are primary responsible party to profile these deceivers. 2Tim.2:15-16.
·         Vs. 9 broadens basis to judge by; what did Lord Jesus Christ teach?
·         Vs. 10 orders the taking of action following judgment: We are not to endorse or support them in any way, shape, or form that will further their ministry. This is not to say however that we’re not to speak to them of Truth.
·         Vs. 11 is dire warning to those that support deceivers. This includes wishing them well in their efforts. Mt.10:14; Mk.6:11; Lk.9:5.
In summation: If and when we are living The Way (Jn.14:6), as followers of Christ we are capable of and responsible to judge all things. (1Cor.2:9-16) Doing so takes work that is uncomfortable. Not fulfilling this responsibility is a serious infraction.

ALONE?

NOT ALONE, BUT ALONE
Tuesday, July 14, 2020

Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of a good courage. Do not fear nor be afraid of them. For Jehovah your God is He who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.
John 13:33-35 Little children, I am with you yet a little while. You shall seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, Where I go, you cannot come, so I now say to you. I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. As I have loved you, you should also love one another. By this all shall know that you are My disciples, if you have love toward one another.
James 1:16-25 Do not err, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness nor shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth with the Word of truth, for us to be a certain firstfruit of His creatures. Therefore, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. For the wrath of man does not work out the righteousness of God. Therefore putting aside all filthiness and overflowing of evil, receive in meekness the implanted Word, which is able to save your souls. But become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man studying his natural face in a mirror. For he studied himself and went his way, and immediately he forgot what he was like. But whoever looks into the perfect Law of liberty and continues in it, he is not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work. This one shall be blessed in his doing.

As God’s children, we are never alone.
As Christians, we are sometimes alone.
God’s Word emphasizes that He will not, does not, leave family members alone. (Deut.31:6; Heb.13:5)
A different tale when it comes to people. As experienced by Jesus there will be times when brethren will leave us alone. We must not emotionally let such aloneness influence the truth of God as steadfast companion to His John 1:12 sons and daughters.
Received a note from a Christian sister that has been steadily maturing in the years I’ve known her. Her life is a difficult one that I, having never “been there” cannot even imagine. As several times in the past, she expressed her constant and increasing desire for fellowship on an upward plane, something she has nothing of from her biological family.
More and more she is looking to Scripture for life. Recently she did a study to discover her Holy Spirit gifts. Help & Assistance was no surprise to those that know her.
Excited, she e-contacted “… over 6 people … asking what their gifts are and how they study the Bible?” . . . without response from any one on either part of her question. This leaving her feeling alone and with the very proper question of why no response from these professing Christians?
There could be a number of answers, including nothing to share because they don’t study the Bible, don’t know their gifts; don’t much care.
I say to her and others enthusiastic about their relationship with God and His family: Love one another as He loves us. Let’s live by the perfect law of liberty letting not one brother or sister feel alone.

LEAVING APPALAXCHIA

LEAVING APPALACHIA

John 5:1-12 After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: …

How often is a question asked and in doing so reveals our attitude of healthiness, or not?
Bethesda is far away in time and geography. So what does reading Jesus healing there so many years ago have to do with you and me here and now? The answer depends on whether we simply read it as distant in time and space, or study, contemplate, and apply to our present circumstances on a regular basis. Some thoughts I’ve had about the Bethesda account that are beneficial when accepted and applied:
·         There may be a vast gulf between not wanting to be sick or die and wanting to be whole.
·         Being whole goes far beyond the physical. It includes the challenges of carrying responsibilities beyond “the bed”.
·         It doesn’t take being face to face with the jaws of a shark for life to be frightening.
·         Knowing what “up” and about wholeness entails, even may demand, we may opt to remain abed.
Appalachia is beautiful country. I’ve enjoyed many areas of it with family, friends, and strangers. Friend Mike was born and raised in on the Ohio side of the river not far from Wheeling, West Virginia. The village of Mount Pleasant is quaint, noted for the largest Quaker meeting house in the USA, and being a very active underground railway station.
But as far as employment and wages, Mike those many decades ago decided for opportunities elsewhere. As a young man he joined the army and served over 25 years, even holding an important position at West Point for a period of time. He and his dear wife returned home in retirement. Mike working at a supermarket down the mountains and Pam vigorously employed in the classroom media department at the University of Ohio.
Mike encountered numerous young people bemoaning their status. They wanted more, a life with better opportunities. But when Mike advised that the answer is to leave, even joining the military, they were not interested in rising up and walking.
I continue to wonder if Jesus asked others lying by the pool? Didn’t others hear His words to the man? Probably, whereas we too hear His words here and now.

EVIDENTIALLY REASONABLE

EVIDENTIALLY REASONABLE
Sunday, July 12, 2020

2Corinthians (MKJV) 5:1-10 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For indeed in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our dwelling-place out of Heaven; if indeed in being clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tabernacle groan, being burdened; inasmuch as we do not wish to be unclothed, but to be clothed, so that the mortal might be swallowed up by the life. And He who has worked in us for this same thing is God, who also is giving to us the earnest of the Spirit. Then being always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body, we are away from home from the Lord; for we walk by faith, not by sight; then we are confident and we are pleased rather to go away from home out of the body, and to come home to the Lord. Therefore we are also laboring to be well-pleasing to Him, whether at home or away from home. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive the things done through the body, according to that which he has done, whether good or bad.

What is our material life? It is like a vapor that appears very briefly and then disappears. (2Cor.5:1; Jam.4:14; 2Pet.3:10-14)
Using human scribes, not angels, God communicated language comprehendible and preserved the information for our benefit, the Bible; His message eternal, yet applicable in the present in all eras at any age in every environment. (Isa.40:6-8; 2Tim.2:15-16; 3:15-16)
What better way to communicate than in writing? Momentary speech or sight can be seriously misconstrued . . . and we later wonder if we heard or saw correctly. (Have you ever played the Telephone or Witness game?) With writing we can reread as often as we need or want.
One of the things that is especially helpful in reading and studying God’s Word is that it repeats and repeats using numerous penman of different background and personality and from diverse locales over a long period of time.
God’s Word authenticates as it directs and guides us only in reasonable manners. Let us conform and thereby be evidentially reasonable living and dying factors. (Rom.12:1-3)

PONDERING SHADOWS

PONDERING SHADOWS
Friday, July 10, 2020

One morning I awoke with one word on my mind from 23rd Psalm; shadow. Why? Couldn’t say immediately, but since it wouldn’t disappear I decided to check it out in KJV using concordance in e-Sword program.
Reading all 71 KJV verses containing “shadow” is quite the expansive provocative spiritual exercise; one facet being reminded of how large the outline of God’s Word is in my life.
I know many of you are busier than this old retiree, but I encourage you to work thru the verses and be blessed in seeing what light the Lord gives you.  EBB4
