THE TIT OF TECHNOLOGY

THE TIT OF TECHNOLOGY
Friday, February 28, 2014

Hebrews 12:1-4 Therefore, having so vast a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, and throwing off everything that hinders us and especially the sin that so easily entangles us, let us keep running with endurance the race set before us, 2 fixing our attention on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of the faith, who, in view of the joy set before him, endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Think about the one who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you may not become tired and give up. 4 In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

I’ve no personal memories of being a dependent baby, but have observed that weaning is usually not easy, especially as it’s not our decision.
What in the world got me to thinking about this, turning my pondering to Hebrews 12 . . . and then led me to doing a bit of digging and finding 2Samuel 22:6 and 2Peter 2:20?
A grandson, having just turned 21, has made some life changing decisions. One of which is he purchased a wrist watch. “So what?!” you say?
He has done so because he realized technology, mainly smartphone, is a merciless domitrix demanding attention. So Ian, though still having his phone, has shifted it from position of snare to mere tool used as needed . . . as opposed to needing it.
Getting in my vehicle to go to birthday dinner, he placed his phone in glove compartment and left it there until 4.5 hours later when he retrieved it when I dropped him off at his home.
It’s easy for we older folks to narrowly think alcohol, drugs, gambling et al are the real life-controlling addictions in life, isn’t it?  EBB4

WALKING AGAINST THE WIND

WALKING AGAINST THE WIND
Wednesday, February 26, 2014

John 3:1-8 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
John 14:5-6 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
1Corinthians 8:5-6 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) 6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
1Corinthians 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
2John 1:6-7 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

The Apostle Peter, his speech recorded in Acts 4:12, stated truth that is resisted by multitudes, some of which are religious and name Jesus among their beliefs; though never as Lord Jesus Christ, Deity, Incarnate God . . . but in limited personage as prophet, a good man.
Tragically, to them Jesus will say He never knew them for they were never truly intimately acquainted with or trusted Him as Lord Jesus Christ. (Mt.7:21-27; Jn.14:15; 15:10; 1Jn.5:2-3)
Jesus is “Lord Jesus Christ” (82 times in KJV); Almighty God, Supreme Sovereign Savior alone; firmly declaring that those that are not for Him are against Him. (Mt.12:30’ Lk.11:23)
  Dare we resist?  EBB4

PREDICTING THE WHETHER OF THE WEATHER

PREDICTING THE WHETHER OF THE WEATHER
Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Judges [ISV] 17:6 Back in those days, Israel didn't yet have a king, so each person did whatever seemed right in his own opinion.

Global warming has and still is increasing the possibility of getting mugged or murdered, or so have said early and latter day criminologists. These studious Sherlocks believe that in the next 90 years in the USA there’ll be approximately an additional 22,000 murders, 180, 000 rapes, 1.2 million more assaults, 260,000 robberies, 1.3 million burglaries, 2.2 million larcenies, and 580,000 auto thefts above and beyond normal rates of criminal activity.
Does anyone know the temperature the day Cain picked up that rock?
Wait! Rock is hypothetical just like the ambient whether of the weather, isn’t it? And doesn’t criminal activity have everything to do with moral relativism far from The Word?  EBB4

DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: THE WORD IN US

DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: THE WORD IN US
Monday, February 24, 2014

The following is from notes taken and thoughts provoked from Pastor Paul Marine’s Sunday sermon.

Hebrews [NLT] 10:23-26 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. [Also note Psalm 50]

Studying discipleship is the easy part. Being one is the hard part. Discovering How To and Being can be poles apart!
Much in the way of How To has been Biblically explained since the first lecture in this 6 month series: DISCIPLE IS NOT JUST A WORD; DISCIPLES ARE LEARNERS, MAYBE; DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: ME; DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: US; DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: PARTNERING IN TRUTH; DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: THE WORD OF GOD; and last week, DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: FIRM FOUNDATIONS.
It’s now time to ask “How has this Truth impacted me, family, this church, our community?” Or have I just found these lectures interesting but I remain unchanged?
The Apostle Paul urged the Colossian followers of Christ “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” (NLT 3:16-17) This exhortation is just as pertinent today as those many centuries ago. God still speaks His Word to us today! However, do we hear and speak this Word to others?
Consider the USA church situation today, read Pew, Barna, and others. The picture is not a good one. Why the discombobulation? Why so much belief far from the truth of God’s Word? Why do so many Christians trusting blessings having to do with financial prosperity and health as assurance of God’s love? Should we simply blame Satan . . . or consider it is the result of godly Christians praying for the fire of revival? (Pastor believes the latter reason.)
Are we listening?!! “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (NLT 2Tim.3:16-17)
Let us consider the faith of Habakkuk, a prophet sadly lamenting the iniquity of the times, as one sensibly touched with grief for the lamentable decay of religion and righteousness. (Matthew Henry) “I have heard all about you, Lord. I am filled with awe by your amazing works. In this time of our deep need, help us again as you did in years gone by. And in your anger, remember your mercy.” (NLT 3:2)
If we are really listening God may this week bring something new before us a individuals and/or as a local congregation. And then how shall we live?

RELIGION OR REDEMPTION?

RELIGION OR REDEMPTION?
Sunday, February 23, 2014
Acts [GW] 17:16-30 While Paul was waiting for Silas and Timothy in Athens, he saw that the city had statues of false gods everywhere. This upset him. He held discussions in the synagogue with Jews and converts to Judaism. He also held discussions every day in the public square with anyone who happened to be there. Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers had discussions with him. Some asked, "What is this babbling fool trying to say?" Others said, "He seems to be speaking about foreign gods." The philosophers said these things because Paul was telling the Good News about Jesus and saying that people would come back to life.
Then they brought Paul to the city court, the Areopagus, and asked, "Could you tell us these new ideas that you're teaching? Some of the things you say sound strange to us. So we would like to know what they mean."
Everyone who lived in Athens looked for opportunities to tell or hear something new and unusual.
Paul stood in the middle of the court and said, "Men of Athens, I see that you are very religious. As I was going through your city and looking closely at the objects you worship, I noticed an altar with this written on it: 'To an unknown god.' I'm telling you about the unknown god you worship.
The God who made the universe and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. He doesn't live in shrines made by humans, and he isn't served by humans as if he needed anything. He gives everyone life, breath, and everything they have. From one man he has made every nation of humanity to live all over the earth. He has given them the seasons of the year and the boundaries within which to live. He has done this so that they would look for God, somehow reach for him, and find him. In fact, he is never far from any one of us.
Certainly, we live, move, and exist because of him. As some of your poets have said, 'We are God's children.' So if we are God's children, we shouldn't think that the divine being is like an image made from gold, silver, or stone, an image that is the product of human imagination and skill. (Jn.3:3)

OUR PROBLEM WITH ROMANS 13

OUR PROBLEM WITH ROMANS 13
Friday, February 21, 2014

A senator is jogging with his dog along a nature trail. A coyote jumps out and attacks his dog, then bites the senator.

The senator starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie "Bambi" and then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural.

He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills the government $20,000 testing it for diseases and $500,000 for team of specialists relocating it halfway across the country.

He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the State $2,000 testing it for diseases.

The senator goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for diseases from the coyote and getting his bite wound bandaged.

The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is now free of dangerous animals.

The senator spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a "coyote awareness program" for residents of the area.

The Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the entire world.

The senator's security agent is fired for not stopping the attack. The government spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with additional special training on the nature of coyotes.

PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million suit against the state.

Author unknown, but most likely a disgruntled Christian citizen.

Mid Term Exam

2Cor 13:5 (NAS) Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves!...

·  Now then; let us reflect on these "tests" and give ourselves an honest self-rating of "Christ in Us" in these five areas.

1.      Gospel Belief and Confession: Do you believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Have you held fast to sound doctrine against the many false prophets offering a different gospel?

2.      Born Again / Spirit of Adoption / The Lord's Correction: Are you born from above? Do you have that ongoing "Abba, Father!" instinct within, that inner knowing of your relationship with Him? Is God treating you as His child when you fall into sin?

3.      Repentance / Freedom from Sin: Have you resolutely turned away from sin? Do you habitually sin, or can you praise God in spirit and truth that He has truly "set you free indeed?"

4.      Good Works by God's Grace: Have you been given a grace-gift of ministry to serve others with? Is your life living proof of Christ in you, or have you only "mere words" and self-delusion to cling to?

5.      The Fruit of the Spirit: Are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control manifesting and growing in your life? Are you producing fruit in keeping with repentance?

·  As we go through the various seasons of life we might well find ourselves deficient in one or more of these tests. Seeing the whole of them can illuminate where we have stumbled, and encourage us to deal honestly and urgently with any problem areas.

Col 1:27-29 (NIV) ...God has chosen to make known... the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy...

Gal 4:19 (TEB) My dear children! Once again, just like a mother in childbirth, I feel the same kind of pain for you until Christs' nature is formed in you.

1John 5:12-13 (NIV) He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

2Pet 1:10-12 (Phi) Set your minds, then, on endorsing by your conduct the fact that God has called and chosen you. If you go along these lines there is no reason why you should stumble. Indeed, if you live this sort of life a rich welcome awaits you as you enter the eternal kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Therefore I shall not fail to remind you again and again of things like this, although you already know them...

Eph 3:16-21 (Phi) I pray that out of the glorious richness of his resources he will enable you to know the strength of the Spirit's inner re-enforcement--that Christ may actually live in your hearts by your faith. And I pray that you, rooted and founded in love yourselves, may be able to grasp (with all Christians) how wide and long and deep and high is the love of Christ--and to know for yourselves that love so far above our understanding. So will you be filled through all your being with God himself! Now to him who by his power within us is able to do infinitely more than we dare to ask or imagine--to him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever, amen!

The Fruit of the Spirit

Mat 3:7 (NIV) "...Produce fruit in keeping with repentance."

Mat 7:16-23 (NIV) [Jesus:] "By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'"

Mat 12:33 (NIV) "Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit."

Gal 5:22-23 (NIV) The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.

John 13:35 (NIV) "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Col 1:6 (Wey) Just as it [the Gospel] has also spread through the whole world, yielding fruit and increasing, as it has done among you from the day when first you heard it and came really to know the grace of God.

Plp 2:12-13 (NIV) Therefore, my dear friends... continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

John 15:4-5,8,16 (NIV) [Jesus:] "Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing... This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples... You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last..."

Good Works by Grace

2Tim 2:19-21 (NIV) ..."Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness." In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

·  When speaking of good works, it is important to note that such can never save us, and this is a serious deception often warned about in scripture. Rather it is the other way around: if we are really saved then we will do good works. These are produced in us by the ministry gifts of the Holy Spirit, given by the grace of God.

1Pet 4:10-11 (NAS) As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ...

Rom 12:6-8 (Phi) Through the grace of God we have different gifts. If our gift is preaching, let us preach to the limit of our vision. If it is serving others let us concentrate on our service; it if is teaching let us give all we have to our teaching; and if our gift be the stimulation of the faith of others let us set ourselves to it. Let the man who is called to give, give freely; let the man in authority work with enthusiasm; and let the man who feels sympathy for his fellows in distress help them cheerfully.

Eph 2:10 (NIV) For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

2Tim 1:6 (NIV) For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God...

2Cor 9:8 (NIV) And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Jas 2:17b-24 (NIV) Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. ...I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe... Even the demons believe... Do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?... Abraham's... faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did... You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone.

Acts 26:19-20 (NIV) [Paul:] "So then... I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven... I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds."

Col 1:10-11b (NIV) ...That you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might.

DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: FIRM FOUNDATION

DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: FIRM FOUNDATIONS
Monday, February 17, 2014

The following is written from notes taken and thoughts generated yesterday during Pastor Josh Klein’s morning sermon at Benson Baptist Church.  EBB4

Daniel chapter 3
Romans [NLT] 1:16 [Apostle Paul] For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.
2Timothy [GW] 3:16-17 Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God's approval. They equip God's servants so that they are completely prepared to do good things.

Reading of Nebuchadnezzar in the Book of Daniel we see he was not satisfied with being king of the powerful nation of Babylon. He aspired to being king of kings.
As was the warring custom then, children and teens were captured and taken home to be reeducated in the ways of the conqueror: “Among these young men were some Judeans: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. The chief-of-staff gave them Babylonian names: To Daniel he gave the name Belteshazzar. To Hananiah he gave the name Shadrach. To Mishael he gave the name Meshach. And to Azariah he gave the name Abednego.” (Dan.1:6-7) Changing their names however didn’t change who they were; believers of Jehovah God, contrary to Babylonian religion. As we know, this led to a lion’s den and fiery furnace, and experiencing God’s deliverance.
As disciples trusting Jehovah they then and afterward deviated not from godly purpose!
What of us today? Do we claim to be Christians but live apart from discipleship? Dietrich Bonhoeffer stated that Christianity without discipleship is Christianity without Christ. Do we agree?
When Jesus spoke of yoking (Mt.11:29-30) and carrying the cross of self-denial (Lk.9:23), He was referring to discipleship.
How does discipleship look different? It’s a matter of seeking equipping from God’s Word, and then taking action as result of.
When we are disciples we are “church” without edifice! Thinking church is a building is rigidly apart from being a river of living waters to those a-thirsting. (Jn.4:10-14)
Let us every day prepare and act accordingly.

Repentance / Freedom from Habitual Sin

2Tim 2:19 (Wey) God's solid foundation stands unmoved, bearing this inscription, "The Lord knows those who really belong to Him." And this also, "Let every one who names the Name of the Lord renounce all wickedness."

Jude 1:4-5 (NIV) For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe.

Eph 5:6 (Wey) Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is on account of these very sins that God's anger is coming upon the disobedient.

Heb 10:26-27 (NIV) If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

1John 3:5-10 (Phi) You know that... Christ became a man to take away sin, and that in him there is no sin. The man who lives in Christ does not habitually sin. The regular sinner has never seen or known him. You, my children, should not let anyone deceive you. The man who lives a good life is a good man, as surely as Christ is good. But the man whose life is habitually sinful is spiritually a son of the devil, for the devil has been a sinner from the beginning. Now the Son of God came to earth with the express purpose of undoing the devil's work. The man who is really God's son does not practice sin, for God's nature is in him, and such a heredity is incapable of sin. Here we have a clear indication as to who are the children of God and who are the children of the devil. The man who does not lead a good life is no son of God.

1John 2:3-7 (NIV) We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning.

Luke 6:46 (Wey) [Jesus:] "And why do you all call me 'Master, Master' and yet not do what I tell you?"

1Cor 6:9 (NIV) Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

John 8:34-36 (Wey) "In most solemn truth I tell you," replied Jesus, "that every one who commits sin is the slave of sin. Now a slave does not remain permanently in his master's house, but a son does. If then the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed."

Titus 2:11-15 (NIV) For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope--the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. These, then, are the things you should teach...

WILL THE REAL CHRISTIAN STEP FORWARD - Part Three

WILL THE REAL CHRISTIAN STEP FORWARD – Part 3

Are You A Christian?

TEST: Born Again / The Inner Witness / Correction as Children

John 3:3-7 (NIV) Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again... Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.'"

1Pet 1:23 (Phi) For you are not just mortals now but sons of God; the live, permanent Word of the living God has given you his own indestructible heredity.

Gal 4:6 (NIV) Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba [Daddy!], Father."

Rom 8:14-16,23 (NIV) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God... You received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God... Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

·  Those who believe in the Gospel and follow Jesus will be born again into new, spiritual life. This will result in what is termed "the Spirit of adoption" which is evidenced by the "inner witness" of "Abba, Father". This is an inner knowing that we are children of God, where we cry out "Daddy! Father!" with love and expectation by deep, spiritual instinct.

Rom 8:9,15-16 (Phi) You cannot, indeed, be a Christian at all unless you have something of his Spirit in you... You can say with a full heart, "Father, my Father". The Spirit himself endorses our inward conviction that we really are the children of God.

·  Christians do not habitually remain in sin, as we will see in the following test. Yet we all can stumble, we all can fall into sin. Hopefully, this is not deliberate, but even if it is on occasion God can still use it to encourage us that we are His children. For if and when we sin, the correction / rebuke / chastisement of the Lord will train us into the righteousness of Christ--if we are His.

Heb 12:5-8 (Wey) And you have quite forgotten the encouraging words which are addressed to you as sons, and which say, "My son, do not think lightly of the Lord's discipline, and do not faint when He corrects you; for those whom the Lord loves He disciplines: and He scourges every son whom He acknowledges." ...God is dealing with you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? And if you are left without discipline, of which every true son has had a share, that shows that you are bastards, and not true sons.

·  This is a very clear-cut test: if you can continue in habitual sin and "get away with it", no matter what you say, you are not a child of God. On the other hand, if we really are His children, this will be proven by the fact that He will not allow us to remain in sin--or go far wrong--through His active correction in our lives.

Rev 3:19 (NAS) [Jesus:] "Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent."

Heb 12:9-11 (Wey) Our earthly fathers used to discipline us and we treated them with respect, and shall we not be still more submissive to the Father of our spirits, and live? It is true that they disciplined us for a few years according as they thought fit; but He does it for our certain good, in order that we may become sharers in His own holy character. Now, at the time, discipline seems to be a matter not for joy, but for grief; yet it afterwards yields to those who have passed through its training a result full of peace--namely, righteousness.

WILL THE REAL CHRISTIAN STEP FORWARD - Part Two

WILL THE REAL CHRISTIAN STEP FORWARD – Part Two
Thursday, February 13, 2014

·  Going to church does not make you a Christian; nor does saying a prayer, going down an aisle, passing a catechism, telling yourself that you are, or trying to be a decent person. You can only be a Christian if Christ is in you, which can be tested and proven according to the scriptures.

Gospel Belief and Confession of Faith

1Cor 15:1-4 (Jer) Brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, the gospel that you have received and in which you are firmly established; because the gospel will save you only if you keep believing exactly what I preached to you--believing anything else will not lead to anything. I taught you... that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried; and that he was raised to life on the third day, in accordance with the scriptures.

Rom 10:8-13 (NIV) ..."The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved... for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

·  We must believe the right Gospel about the right One. Christian life starts with an embracing of the Gospel, but what we believe in is also an ongoing test as well. We are warned in scripture not to drift away from the faith as we go through life, which is a real danger. Do we believe in, and are we following, the simple and scripture-defined Gospel of Jesus Christ?

1John 2:24 (NIV) See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

2Cor 11:3-4 (Jer) But the serpent, with his cunning, seduced Eve, and I am afraid that in the same way your ideas may get corrupted and turned away from simple devotion to Christ. Because any newcomer has only to proclaim a new Jesus, different from the one that we preached, or you have only to receive a new spirit, different from the one you have already received, or a new gospel, different from the one you have already accepted--and you welcome it with open arms!

Gal 1:9 (Phi) I am amazed that you have so quickly transferred your allegiance from him who called you by the grace of Christ to another "gospel"! Not that there is another gospel, but there are men who are upsetting your faith with a travesty of the gospel of Christ. Yet I say that if I, or an angel from heaven, were to preach to you any other gospel than the one you have received, may he be dammed!

Rev 3:3a [Jesus:] "Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent."

Heb 2:1 (NIV) We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Heb 10:23 (NKJ) Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering...

WILL THE REAL CHRISTIAN STEP FORWARD – Part One

WILL THE REAL CHRISTIAN STEP FORWARD – Part One
Wednesday, February 12, 2014

Some, in studying Discipleship series derived from Pastor Paul Marine’s Sunday sermons, wonder about their personal relationship with God. The following definitive article is actually 8 pages long, a lot for many people to digest at one time. Consequently I’ve decided to share it in segments. Below is the first. EBB4

Are You A Christian?

·  Going to church does not make you a Christian; nor does saying a prayer, going down an aisle, passing a catechism, telling yourself that you are, or trying to be a decent person. You can only be a Christian if Christ is in you, which can be tested and proven according to the scriptures.

Test Yourself

2Cor 13:5 (NIV) Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test?

1Cor 11:28,31 (NAS) But a man must examine himself... If we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.

2Cor 13:5 (Wey) Test yourselves to discover whether you are true believers; put yourselves under examination...

·  God gives us instructions on how we can and should "test ourselves" in scripture, which can be grouped into five major categories: 1) Gospel Belief and Confession; 2) Born Again / Sonship / Correction; 3) Repentance / Deliverance from Sin; 4) Good Works by Grace, and 5) The Fruit of the Spirit. The first three are starting points, but can also serve as ongoing tests, as we will see. The last two are living proof of "Christ Jesus in us", or not. These scriptures should encourage those who are true Christians, and give cause for sober reflection to those who think they are but are not.

2Pet 1:10a (NAS) ...Be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you.

IS IT RIGHT TO JUDGE? THE PERILS OF NOT JUDGING

IS IT RIGHT TO JUDGE? THE PERILS OF NOT JUDGING
Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Leviticus [NLT] 10:1-7 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the Lord by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. 2 So fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the Lord. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord meant when he said, ‘I will display my holiness through those who come near me. I will display my glory before all the people.’” And Aaron was silent.
4 Then Moses called for Mishael and Elzaphan, Aaron’s cousins, the sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel. He said to them, “Come forward and carry away the bodies of your relatives from in front of the sanctuary to a place outside the camp.” 5 So they came forward and picked them up by their garments and carried them out of the camp, just as Moses had commanded.
6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not show grief by leaving your hair uncombed or by tearing your clothes. If you do, you will die, and the Lord’s anger will strike the whole community of Israel. However, the rest of the Israelites, your relatives, may mourn because of the Lord’s fiery destruction of Nadab and Abihu. 7 But you must not leave the entrance of the Tabernacle[b] or you will die, for you have been anointed with the Lord’s anointing oil.” So they did as Moses commanded.
1 Corinthians [NLT] 11:28-31 That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. 29 For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died. 31 But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way.

Construction without consideration of original quality and maintenance makes for disastrous results. Beginning with problem(s), a building deteriorates seriously through stresses, corrosion, and erosion.
This is just as true spiritually for Christian individually and the congregant church.
At hand, we have the perfect construction and maintenance plan, God’s schematic, His Word living (Jn.1:1) and written (Jn.17:17; 1Thes.2:13). To neglect, not reference, or trivialize sacred direction of self, brethren, or worldview is perilous.
Without congregant judgment your church may lose its place as a spiritual powerhouse and become no more than a benevolent ministry (Rev.2:18-23), or worse (Rev.2:5).
Without personal examination of self we suffer not just loss of God’s support, but He resists us Jam.4:4-10), or worse (Heb.10:31).
Think not construction or maintenance faults are always readily recognized. Even undisciplined children can be happy . . . for awhile.
I confess that in my flesh I cringe at examination of self or the local church. (Especially in having suffered expense of exercising the latter.) But I know I must, howbeit reluctantly, judge, for it too is part and parcel of discipleship.  EBB4

DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: THE WORD OF GOD

DISCIPLESHIP JOURNEY: THE WORD OF GOD
Written from notes taken and thoughts provoked during Pastor Paul’s sermon Sunday, 2/9/ 2014.

John [MKJV] 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
1Thessalonians [MKJV] 2:12-13 … you should walk worthy of God, who has called you to His kingdom and glory. 13 And for this cause we thank God without ceasing, that when you received the Word of hearing, of God, you welcomed it as the Word of God, not as a word of men, but as it is, truly the Word of God, which also effectually works in you who believe.
Also note GotQuestions.org "How can Jesus and the Bible both be the Word of God?" http://www.gotquestions.org/Jesus-Bible-Word-God.html

The goal of discipleship is not to be a better person. That will be product thereof. The purpose is to please, honor, and glorify God by being under total control of The Word of God. (Eccl.12:13; Job 28:28)
Note the record in Matthew 4:1-11: Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to be tested by Satan. Though greatly weakened by physical deprivation incurred by fasting, Jesus did not rely on His power as Word Incarnate. He relied on and used The Word written; His final victorious declaration to Satan being the overcoming truth "You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve."
I find the pronoun “you” very interesting. Originally shown in verse 13 in contextual setting of Deuteronomy 6, it is there addressed to population. In Matthew 4 indeed a reminder of that which we are to rely on and emulate as John 1:12 family, but also reminder to Satan of you didn’t, you don’t, and because of  you never can . . . you are lost and always shall be!
Pastor Paul expressed his belief that for some time now the church (God’s people) has lost much knowledge of the Word by:

1.       Allowing self to be intimidated by volume of reading.

2.       Narrow thinking on part of knowledgeable elders; Insist on using KJV whether comprehending the English or not, et al.

3.       Elitism among those learned and educated.

4.       Starting reading with the more difficult books of the Bible. Begin with the 4 gospels!

5.       Hung up on difficult passages. This reminded me of something Lincoln is credited with. The Bible being one of his favorite books, kept at hand, when asked if the parts of Scripture he didn’t understand troubled him . . . he said “No, it’s the parts I understand that trouble me.” Hmmm…. Maybe that’s another problem; the Word being troubling so we don’t read or study it?

6.       Today’s attitudes toward God’s Word: fictional, not trustworthy, another helpful book, etc.

7.       Lack of regard for Jehovah God, Lord Jesus Christ, and/or the Holy Spirit.

8.       Laziness. Not wanting to work at study and application as stated in 2Timothy [NLT] 2:15-16; 3:16-17 “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. Avoid worthless, foolish talk that only leads to more godless behavior. … All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

Let us not just read and study. Let us ponder what The Word says and discover how we as disciples can fulfill our mandate.  EBB4
