DRINKING WITH LAODICEANS

DRINKING WITH LAODICEANS
Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Revelation [MKJV] 3:14-21 And to the angel of the church of the Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Head of the creation of God [Gen.1:1; Jn.1:1-3; Col.1:10-19], says these things: I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I would that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. …

Question: "Why did Jesus speak so strongly against lukewarm faith?"

Answer:
In Revelation 3:14-21, the Lord is describing the “lukewarm” heart attitude of those in the Laodicean church, an attitude manifested by their deeds. They were neither cold nor hot in relation to God, just lukewarm. Beverages are better either cold or hot. Similarly, the Lord would rather that people be either hot (spiritually on fire for Him) or cold (rejecting Him outright). The Laodiceans understood the analogy because their city drinking water came from a spring six miles to the south over an aqueduct, and it arrived disgustingly lukewarm. It was not hot like the nearby hot springs that people bathed in, nor was it refreshingly cold for drinking. It was lukewarm, good for nothing. In fact, it was nauseating, and that was the Lord’s response to the Laodiceans—they sickened Him.
The letter to the church at Laodicea is the harshest of the seven letters to the churches in Asia Minor. By His indictment against their “deeds,” Jesus makes it clear that this is a dead church. That is not to say that there were no true believers there, only that the church as a whole was spiritually uncommitted. Jesus frequently equates deeds, or works, with a person’s true spiritual state. He said, “By their fruit you will recognize them” and “Every good tree bears good fruit” (Matthew 7:16-17). Clearly, the deeds of the Laodiceans were not in keeping with true salvation because the deeds of the true believer will be “hot,” reflecting the spiritual passion of a life transformed. Such are easily recognizable by the world. The lukewarm deeds, however—those done without joy, without love and without the fire of the Spirit—do more harm to the watching world than the deeds done by those who are completely cold to the things of God. The lukewarm are those who claim to know God but live as though He doesn’t exist. They may go to church, but their religion is self-righteous complacency. They may claim to be Christians, but their hearts are unchanged, and their hypocrisy is sickening to God.
The Lord rebukes and disciplines the true believers in the church of Laodicea, commanding them to repent. He sees their lukewarm attitudes as “shameful nakedness” that needs to be clothed in the white garments of true righteousness. He urges them to be earnest, or zealous, and commit themselves totally to Him, for He will reject their lukewarmness by spitting them out of His mouth. But our Lord is gracious and long-suffering. He will always receive to Himself even the most lukewarm Christian who comes to Him in repentance.
The Laodiceans enjoyed material prosperity that led them to a false sense of security and independence. The expression "I am rich, and have become wealthy" is a literary device that inverts the natural sequence for emphasis. Here it stresses that the wealth attained came though self-exertion. Spiritually, they had great needs. This self-sufficient attitude is a constant danger when Christians live lives of ease and enjoy prosperity.

I DID IT MY WAY!

I DID IT MY WAY!
Tuesday, September 29, 2015

Mark [ESV] 8 … turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man." And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

“If at first you don’t succeed, try doing the way God told you in the first place.”  Anon.

Exodus 3:14
Psalm [ESV] 139 O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high;…

Though my collection of lanyards is of various colors and pattern, the attached device is my unchanging favorite color, blue. At doctor’s suggestion and family’s encouragement, it has been my constant companion for over a year now. Awake or asleep, even during ablution and otherwise porcelain visits, it is with me. While holding my newly delivered grandchild recently, its blinking light caught his attention.
The device is remarkable in its features; push the recessed button for assistance from ask-A-Nurse, directions while driving or walking in lost mode, or to bring police and/or a rescue squad all while alerting prearranged list of those that love you (9/2/15 did so, received much TLC, recovering under observation of family, neighbors, and friends, and now awaiting delivery of replacement door.).
Also there is the wonderful quality of the GPS software just not knowing where I am all the time, but additionally informing my daughters exactly where I am in real-time.
It however is not failsafe . . . for the whole system depends on human ingenuity and maintenance . . . and we all know what that entails.
Only the Sovereign Creator and Sustainer is incontrovertibly reliable in present and eternal vigilance with perfect provision for optimum health in body, soul, and spirit. However, in order to realize His great beneficence we must hear and heed His signaling.
We may even do so while drinking a cup of coffee.

BIBLE STUDY -- KEN ANDERSON & OTHER HELPERS

BIBLE STUDY - KEN ANDERSON & OTHER HELPERS
Sunday, September 27, 2015

2Timothy 2:15 Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

I am certain that the “more noble” (Acts 17:11) Bereans were active 2Corinthians 5 ambassadors for Christ. They shared edification with all interested individual and groups.
God tells us that we are to aid one another in maturation. “When you gather, each person has a psalm, doctrine, revelation, another language, or an interpretation. Everything must be done to help each other grow.” (GW 1Cor.14:26)
In previous DTs I’ve told of a number of helps passed on to us by various Bible scholars. There are many more. Today I share several favorites that I use.
In 1996 Ken Anderson provided easy to use WHERE TO FIND IT IN THE BIBLE, The Ultimate A to Z Resource Fully Illustrated, containing 3,700 topics from “abandoned” to “zoology”. It can be purchased at http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntt=Ken+Anderson&N=0&Ntk=keywords&action=Search&Ne=0&event=ESRCG&nav_search=1&cms=1 for $6.97 (hardback) or $13.99 (paperback) plus S&H.
Meredith’s BOOK OF BIBLE LISTS, A One-Of-A-Kind Collection Of Bible Facts In List Form, is no larger than a paperback Christian novel and a wonderful simple-to-use resource. Chapter one has 14 lists including 10 Commandments, Eight Warnings Concerning Evil Spirits, to Guidelines for Church Leaders. Chapter two provides 23 lists having to do with Biblical promises, including Seven OT Promises for Families. Chapter 8 has 5 lists on the topic of sex, including 30 Rules of Conduct Concerning Sex, and 30 Results of Being a Homosexual. It too can be acquired at Christianbook.com.
ISBE (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia) is made up of a set of A to Z heavy books. Rather than lift them or spread across my already cluttered study desks, I downloaded free from e-Sword.com, and use frequently personally and to pass portions on to others that ask topical questions.
Nave’s Topical Bible is handy resource the size of a regular Bible. Mine is better quality leather bound as the salesman insisted for-free after he walked thru our glass door. Orville J. Nave was “Chaplain in the Army of The United States.” He organized in print “More than 20,000 Bible topics and subtopics, and 100,000 related references, … embracing all doctrines of Biblical religion, and all phases of ancient society, history, law, politics, and other secular subjects; Archaeology, the arts, sciences, philosophy, ethics, and economics; principles of government, equity, and right personal conduct; biography, personal incident, and illustrative facts; geography, the history of nations, states, and cities, and a multitude of common subjects, illustrative of ancient religions, governments, fashions, customs, and ideas.” . . . doing so without commentary, leaving it to the individual to study Bible verses referenced. For a small fee to the copyright owners, it too can be downloaded in e-Sword. Or purchased from Christianbook.com.
Got questions?, http://www.gotquestions.org/ is another exceptionally fine free help with its thus far 240,000+ Bible questions answered. In numerous available languages, every answering includes cursor activated Bible references.
Now, please do share your favorite easy-to-use helpful books. Include complete title and cost for those interested in acquiring. I’ll publish your helps in Saturday DT FORUM.

BIBLE STUDY BY LINKING

BIBLE STUDY BY LINKING
Friday, September 25, 2015

Long before Bible study cybertooling, there were study Bibles containing methodical systematic chain referencing of verses and passages of Scripture.
Recommended by my elder mentors, my first was a hardback copy of The Scofield Reference Bible. Over 50 years and I still have and use, duct and surgical tape and all. (I have newer large print leather bound soft cover, but the old beater lays open at-hand to the left of monitor. Why? It’s not just all the handwritten notes, for some reason the pages turn more easily and I can find things easier in it . . . at times knowing “left side top of page” et al.)
Originally copyrighted in 1909, it remains a fine tool for studying and is still available.
Using KJV Scofield as an example, how do they work? A few examples:
·         KJV Genesis 1:1 “In the abeginning 1bGod created the heaven and the earth.” Go to “a” in center column and you’ll find John 1:1 referenced: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Go to “1b” in center column and discover “Diety” directing to “Elohim” footnote at bottom of page plus chain reference.
·         The first mention of faith is Genesis 3:20. An italicized h is to the left of “called”. Looking at the center column, I see “h Faith” with the next mention in Gen.4:4. Next to it is “(Gen.3:20; Heb.11:39)”, the first and last mentions of faith in Scripture. Go to Gen.4:4, the next link, and you’ll see “d Faith” with the next reference which is Gen.4:4. Continue linking forward and you will study verses on faith. When you finally arrive at Heb.11:39 you will find “1 d faith” in verse. Go to “1” at bottom of page and find brief topical summary on faith.
Are there other study Bibles available? There are. Check out your local Bible store or go to http://www.christianbook.com/ or some other Christian literature supplier website. Single volume study Bibles are available in numerous English or other language versions. The Zondervan NIV Study Bible and Moody Press’s NIV Ryrie Study Bible are two. Such Bibles are also available in other languages.
Using a study Bible to its fullest is a great 2Timothy 2:15 aid . . . and it may even give you more understanding than all your teachers. (Ps.119:99) J EBB4

PS. Scofield was the first study Bible with multiple aids and features. C.I.Scofield was a virtually unknown, but for some unrecorded reason the prestigious Oxford Press took the risk of publishing Scofield. It was soon a top seller and still sells well these days.

CAMEL RIDES & COFFEE

CAMEL RIDES & COFFEE
Thursday, September 24, 2015

John chapter 3 … [Jesus explained] Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. … as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. …

John the Baptist was quite the promoter. In cooperation with his advisory servant leader team, to attract people to hear his message of God’s love John provided free camel and donkey rides for children and coffee and donuts for adults in nice setting of furniture surrounded by pleasing tints. John had the river bank paved with stone and installed a weir to make a settling pond so baptismal waters would be preferably clear and mud free. Additionally, upon wise advice, so as to not offend anyone and to be publicly accepted John refrained from speaking out again sin lest he be labeled a preacher against things.
The above paragraph is neither true nor funny. Had John been a Carney, his final results would have been same as any carnival; stale coffee grounds and stinking dung left behind.
John certainly did tell of God’s love, but not at all in comfy aromatic words. His message of the need for repentance was heard by most people then as it is now; either in godly submission or devilish rejection.
In proclaiming the soon-to-be Messianic age, John said:
Matthew 3:11-12 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he [Jesus] that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his [threshing] floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Luke 3:7-9 Then said he [John] to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father [our religion]: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Jesus proclaimed the same requirement: “… Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. … The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” (Mt.4:17; Mk.1:15)
Indeed John’s message incorporated the love of God, but as with the Apostle Paul’s later words recorded in Romans 12:1-3 and elsewhere in God’s Word, the need for repentance was not casually or optionally associated with God’s love, it is essentially of necessity included for eternal redemption.
As instructed by the Lord the disciples declared the same: “… they went out, and preached that men should repent.” (Mk.6:12;  Act.2:38; 3:19; 8:22; 17:30; 26:20)
What of us? While being hospitable serving coffee, camel rides, or any other loving caring practice, do we unashamedly faithfully tell of the need for repentance . . . the reason why our listener(s) need to accept Jesus?  Without repentance is to remain hell-bound; “condemned already”. (Jn.3:18)  Jesus said “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

BIBLE STUDY -- TYPING THE BOOK

BIBLE STUDY – TYPING THE BOOK
Wednesday, September 23, 2015

2Timothy 2:15 Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

By now you see that Bible study does not require a theological degree. Possibly for some of you this is as surprising news as it was for the temple officers awakening after many years of service under priests. (Jn.7:45-47)
The last part of 2Timothy 2:15 says we are to correctly dissect and expound the Word of Truth, the Bible. This, as “a workman” involves all implements that thus far included inthis Bible Study series.
(When toolset is available, it is foolishness to attempt to build with only one tool.)
Rightly dividing the Word of Truth should include determining the genus of a book, otherwise we may miss much of its meaning.
Book types are Historical, Biographical, Poetic, Proverbial, Prophetic, Personality, Letter (epistle personal [i.e.to Timothy] or corporate [i.e. to Corinth, Ephesus, etc.), or a combination.
Some are easily typed. Proverbs is obviously proverbial. Revelation is prophetic. An example of combination is Daniel, both historic and prophetic.
As previously stated, we need not be learned masters of literature to type a book of the Bible. One Sunday I shared “kinsman – redeemer” passage from the book of Ruth. Reading 1:1 it is evidently a history book; “Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled,”
Then there are the helpful Bible Study introductions. Example: In my Scofield Reference Bible, at the first book it tells “Genesis is the book of beginnings.” Walla, history! But reading further in intro and text I see earliest bit of prophecy in Scripture. “[God said] And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” (Gen.3:15) Oh, and did I mention the importance of paying attention to capitalized nouns and pronouns?
The 4 Gospels must be read together, but not as simply biographical, but as Personality of Lord Jesus Christ.

Acquire the habit of typing books of the Bible . . . you’ll be a better type for it.  EBB4

BIBLE STUDY -- BEING OBJECTIVE

BIBLE STUDY – BEING OBJECTIVE
Tuesday, September 22, 2015

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 5:39-44 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life. And they are the ones witnessing of Me, and you will not come to Me that you might have life. I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me. If another shall come in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, you who receive honor from one another and do not seek the honor that comes from God only? [Also note Mk.12:1-34; 1Cor.2:14]

Objective: 1. existing independently of perception or an individual's conceptions: are there objective moral values?  2. undistorted by emotion or personal bias  3. of or relating to actual and external phenomena as opposed to thoughts, feelings, etc
Subjective: 1. belonging to, proceeding from, or relating to the mind of the thinking subject and not the nature of the object being considered  2. of, relating to, or emanating from a person's emotions, prejudices, etc: subjective views   3. relating to the inherent nature of a person or thing; essential  4. existing only as perceived and not as a thing in itself  (World English Dictionary)

Whether dealt with objectively or subjectively does not change fact that life is problematic. As God’s children we certainly should look to Him for answers. Pray for resolution, yes. Study His Word for remedies, absolutely! God’s Word is objective lens we are to view life thru.
This can only be maximized if we approach The Word objectively. To see clearly we read and study in stance exalting Sovereign God Almighty.
Indeed we are to approach The Word subjectively, but it is serious mistake to do so only to get answers and direction; doing so making our relationship too much about ourselves, and interfering with getting to know God, The Person. This off-center attitude can easily be identified in answering the question: When, how, and for what reason do I study Scripture most diligently?
This can be a difficult truth to wrap our mind around, let alone our heart.
One day in trying to explain to inmate class of several dozen men I received nothing but blank stares. Then it struck me to do what Jesus commonly did; speak to people in terms they understand.
“Have any of you ever gone to prostitutes?” (Dealing with inmates can be far different proposition than teaching Sunday School.) A number of men nodded in consent. A few raised their hand. A few grinned in remembrance.
“Did you go so as to get to know the person?” The response was looks of comprehension, one man speaking out “No, I didn’t want to know the person. I wanted what they had to offer!”
As new Christians we are naturally prone to come to God for what He has to offer; everlasting life presently and future; relief and freedom; peace, purpose and direction. These and more all good things He wants His children to have.
As mature Christians we should unnaturally desire and work to know The Person, God.
EBB4

PS. Cheryl (NE) asked me to pass her question on to you: “Doe’s God the Father feel physical pain?” When Cheryl asked in class, it resulted in quite a discussion and a few baffled looks. What do you think? And why do you think so?

GODLINESS REQUIRES CLARITY OF HOLY POSITION

GODLINESS REQUIRES CLARITY OF HOLY POSITION
Monday, September 21, 2015

Please read John chapter 7. This morning I did so using ESV.

The word “godliness” is used 15 times in KJV. It is however topically mentioned throughout Scripture. But what does it mean?
We are to live in holiness according to, centered in, the gospel scheme of life and death.
Jesus noticeably lived holiness as opposed to religiosity. This was obvious in His manner and speech.
Jesus explained that He did nothing of Himself; because He could not do anything of Himself. All that Jesus did was of the Father.
And so it is to be with us. Holy Jesus said to live holy we are to be like the Holy Father; mature in thinking, character, and action. This is not as though tilting at windmills. It is desire with motivation unto submission to the will and ways of God.
This definitely should include declarations as clearly stated as His. Jesus left no doubt as to where he stood on life issues. (Mt.5:37)
Neutrality on issues so as not to be known as against sin is evil, unholy, as it is unlike the Father and Son!
Let us heed The Word: Let the person who has ears listen to what the Spirit says to the churches. "To the messenger of the church in Laodicea, write: The amen, the witness who is faithful and true, the source of God's creation, says: I know what you have done, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot. But since you are lukewarm and not hot or cold, I'm going to spit you out of my mouth.” (GW Rev.3:13-16)
Godliness requires clarity of holy position.

BIBLE STUDY -- PEOPLE, JOBS, EVENTS

BIBLE STUDY – PEOPLE, JOBS, EVENTS
Sunday, September 20, 2015 (Original 10/15/10)

2Timothy 2:15

An event yesterday set me up for today’s DT: Gesa, our German “granddaughter” is visiting. While she was with me I was about to pay 40 dollars for a service and the man said “Your money is no good here.” Gesa was confused. Why? Due to geographical/cultural distance. Once I explained what the colloquialism meant, she not only understood but was delighted. (Yes Alice, I did warn her not to use on German friends without explaining first.)
“Your money is no good here.” may be new to some of you for the same reason, distance. Not as far away as Europe maybe, but age span or possibly cultural distance. (When I came from Maryland to Nebraska I had to drop a bit of lingo and learn some.)
Much understanding and insight can be realized by digging out knowledge on Bible times’ colloquialisms, people, jobs, events, dress, politics, manners and customs.
Such education may even include freeing from stress and worry: I once read of a wealthy American that believed he was trusting Jesus, but in reading Mt.19:24-25; Mk.10:23-26; Lk.18:24-26 was very concerned as to whether he would go to heaven or not. When it was explained to him what Jesus meant there and relating the event to the larger context of Scripture, the man was freed from his anxiety and thereafter lived in charitable blessed assurance.
There is no lack of resources for this sort of Bible learning. http://www.gotquestions.org/  (http://www.gotquestions.org/camel-eye-needle.html ), concordance, http://www.e-sword.net/downloads.html & other free Bible study software, International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE) & numerous other *books in software or print, and much more is available.
Using Saul/Apostle Paul as example: In ISBE look up “Paul” and you’ll find “Paul, The Apostle” “Paul, Voyage and Shipwreck of” “Pauline Theology” . . . all not just helpful, but necessary for thorough reading and study of the 13 portions of Scripture God led Paul to pen. Or you can simply use e-concordance, printed concordance, Nave’s Topical Bible, et al to find every verse that mentions Saul/Apostle Paul. Read them in context and you’ll realize spiritually beneficial scholarship.
God bless you this day as you seek The One that waits. (Rev.3:20)  EBB4

BIBLE STUDY -- KEY WORDS

BIBLE STUDY – KEY WORDS
Friday, September 18, 2015

Matthew {MKJV today] 5:13-16 [Jesus explained] You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its savor, with what shall it be salted? It is no longer good for anything, but to be thrown out and to be trodden underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under the grain-measure, but on a lampstand. And it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.
Colossians 4:5-6 [Paul] Walk in wisdom toward those on the outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech be always with grace, having been seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
2Timothy 2:15 [Paul] Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

Knowing that keys unlock doors, cabinets, tool boxes, and other containers so as to get inside to gain use and/or security is no mystery. Gaining access to God’s Truth is no different, though not small metal devices, there are keys that aid in opening unto understanding and application that empowers and affects. They are significant words.
My favorite way to demonstrate this study help is to use The First Epistle (letter) of John.
First understand that there is nothing sacrilegious about marking or writing in your Bible. But if you prefer not to write in your “best Bible”, acquire another inexpensive or dust-gatherer to mark in.
Now, read thru 1John slowly, distinctively underlining or highlighting “know” every time you see it. Go back and redo the same exercise because you may have missed a few. It is important that you get every one! (KJV 27 times in 22 verses.)
Now read 1John carefully paying attention to every “know”.
Now using a different color marker, go slow and mark “love”. Redo so as to make sure you didn’t miss any “love”. J (KJV 33 times in 23 verses.)
Now reread 1John carefully paying attention to “know” and “love”.
Now use yet another color and mark “sin”. (KJV 16 times in 9 verses. Also, always remember import of definition in study, if you don’t fully understand Biblical meaning of “know” “love” “sin”, stop and look it up.)
Now reread 1John carefully paying attention to “know” “love” “sin”.
Using yet another color mark “abide”. (KJV 3 times in 3 verses. Again, if don’t know Biblical meaning, look it up.)
Now reread 1John carefully paying attention to “know” “love” “sin” “abide”.
What do you see that you never noticed before?
Do you see the reason the epistle was written?
Do you in a new way see how 1John is not out-of-date, but absolutely applicable to you and me today?
EBB4

PS. Some students use contrarian method. It is to black out “know, love, sin, abide”, reread and see what is missing.

BIBLE STUDY -- THEREFORE

BIBLE STUDY – THEREFORE
Thursday, September 17, 2015

2Timothy 1:7-9 For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore you should not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner. But be partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the eternal times.

There at times when a single word can open up great understanding. In studying Scripture “therefore” is just such a word.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/therefore says – adverb: in consequence of that; as a result; consequently: I think; therefore I am.Use therefore in a SentenceSee images of therefore
Origin: 1125–75; ME ther ( e ) fore,  var. of therfor therefor [KJV is dated 1611.]
Synonyms: hence, whence. Therefore, wherefore, accordingly, consequently, so, then  all introduce a statement resulting from, or caused by, what immediately precedes. Therefore  (for this or that reason) and wherefore  (for which reason) imply exactness of reasoning; they are esp. used in logic, law, mathematics, etc., and in a formal style of speaking or writing. Accordingly  (in conformity with the preceding) and consequently  (as a result, or sequence, or effect of the preceding), although also somewhat formal, occur mainly in less technical contexts. So (because the preceding is true or this being the case) and then (since the preceding is true) are informal or conversational in tone.
In seriously reading and studying God’s Word, every time we see “therefore” we should backup and read the why of “therefore”, and then look at what follows that is substantially consequential.
One friend, in his personal way of saying, would read and talk about the passage leading up to a “therefore” and then say of the “therefore” verse, “And now here’s the thing …”
Though today we’re looking at just one word in Bible study, it is often seen in KJV: 1237 times in 1220 verses. 881 times in 870 verses in OT, 356 times in 350 verses in NT.
Looking at the numbers above some of you may now be moaning “God help me.” Here’s the thing . . . if you do the exercise, He will.  EBB4

PS. “therefore “is in 2Timothy 7 times in 7 verses; a good brief place to first exercise.

BIBLE STUDY -- PAUL USED HELPS?

BIBLE STUDY – PAUL USED HELPS?
Wednesday, September 16, 2015

1Corinthians 2:1-16 And I [Paul], brothers, when I came to you, did not come with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. But, we speak wisdom among those who are perfect; yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the rulers of this world, that come to nothing. But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, which God has hidden, predetermining it before the world for our glory; which none of the rulers of this world knew (for if they had known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory). But as it is written, "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard," nor has it entered into the heart of man, "the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God. For who among men knows the things of a man except the spirit of man within him? So also no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. But we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit from God, so that we might know the things that are freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged by no one. For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.
2Timothy 2:1-2 [Paul wrote] Therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
Psalm 119:20; Matthew 23:24; Mark 1:5

We now know Paul encouraged “Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. But shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.” (2Tim.2:15-16)
But in reading 2Timothy how many of us take note that he also wrote? “When you come, bring the cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments.” (4:13)
Is it assuming too much to suppose the books and parchments were not novels, crossword puzzles, sports magazines, but that they were books of OT Scripture, or possibly Bible study helps of some sort?
Considering the person and life-work of Paul (1Cor.2:2), in my opinion they may have included study helps.
Considering that Paul was a Pharisee much learned in the Old Testament, possibly they were his own notes, diagramming, cross referencing?
Knowing The Author, God, was just giving new testimony Word, could we consider the parchments may have included writings of some of Paul’s contemporaries?

If study helps in whatever form, what does this say to those adamantly holding the position “I only read the Bible!”?  EBB4

BIBLE STUDY -- COLLABORATION

BIBLE STUDY – COLLABORATION
Tuesday, September 15, 2015

Hebrews 4:9-14 So then there remains a rest to the people of God. For he who has entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from His. Therefore let us labor to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of unbelief. For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight, but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

After deciding This DT title I realize that though common in my youth, “collaboration, collaborating, collaborator, collaborated” is not household words today.
Collaboration, a word of action meaning cooperative teamwork on accomplishing something; today emphasizing forming an alliance with one or more people with the common goal of studying, understanding, and applying Scripture to their lives.
Cooperative collaboration doesn’t necessarily mean without lively discussion or possible argument, and perhaps at times sharp disagreement. (Heb.4:12)
I’m not talking about one teaching with students listening and asking a question or so.
I’m talking about 2 to 6 collaborators pre-reading pre-chosen Bible passage, thinking about, then meeting together reading the Scripture verse by verse and freely discussing; hopefully their leaving in peace as brothers; pondering in their own closet, and productively returning together again.
(I’ve never been much for emotionally arguing as for me it is quite distracting and physically exhausting. I have learned much by listening to thought-provoking arguments.)
Collaboration is a fine Bible study method. I encourage you to try it as yet another way to stimulate your and others’ edification.  EBB4

An example from 200 years ago: 22 questions the members of John Wesley’s Holy Club asked themselves every day.
  1. Am I consciously or unconsciously creating the impression that I am better than I really am? In other words, am I a hypocrite?
  2. Am I honest in all my acts and words, or do I exaggerate?
  3. Do I confidentially pass on to another what was told to me in confidence?
  4. Can I be trusted?
  5. Am I a slave to dress, friends, work, or habits?
  6. Am I self-conscious, self-pitying, or self-justifying?
  7. Did the Bible live in me today?
  8. Do I give it time to speak to me everyday?
  9. Am I enjoying prayer?
  10. When did I last speak to someone else about my faith?
  11. Do I pray about the money I spend?
  12. Do I get to bed on time and get up on time?
  13. Do I disobey God in anything?
  14. Do I insist upon doing something about which my conscience is uneasy?
  15. Am I defeated in any part of my life?
  16. Am I jealous, impure, critical, irritable, touchy, or distrustful?
  17. How do I spend my spare time?
  18. Am I proud?
  19. Do I thank God that I am not as other people, especially as the Pharisees who despised the publican?
  20. Is there anyone whom I fear, dislike, disown, criticize, hold a resentment toward or disregard? If so, what am I doing about it?
  21. Do I grumble or complain constantly?
  22. Is Christ real to me?

BIBLE STUDY REQUIRES KNOWING GOD

BIBLE STUDY REQUIRES KNOWING GOD
Monday, September 14, 2015

John 1:1-4 [Also note Col.1;17] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He [Jesus Christ] was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him [Jesus Christ], and without Him [Jesus Christ] not even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him [Jesus Christ] was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 5:37-42 And He sending Me [Jesus Christ; Jn.3:16], the Father Himself, has borne witness of Me [Jesus Christ]. Neither have you heard His [God the Father] voice at any time nor seen His shape. And you do not have His [God the Father] Word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He [God the Father] has sent. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life. And they are the ones witnessing of Me [Jesus Christ], and you will not come to Me [Jesus Christ] that you might have life. I [Jesus Christ] do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God [the Father] in you.
Hebrews 12:1-2 [Also note Rom.8:34] Therefore since we also are surrounded with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily besets us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right of the throne of God.

Years ago I was told that in studying the Bible it helps to know God. I disagree with this. I consider it essential to know God personally. Friend and brother in Christ Mark reminded me of this one day. He said something like “There are people that want to know God, but few of those want to know about God.”
Here is knowledge of God, The Author, necessary to studying His Book.
·         He is not limited. He is infinite; immeasurable. (Ps.139:7-10; Mt.9:26; 1Jn.3:20)
·         He is eternal. (Ps.90:2; Rev.1:8)
·         He is unchangeable. (Mal.3:6; Heb.13:8; James 1:17)
·         He is Omniscient; having complete absolute knowledge of all past, present, and to be. (Ps.139:4; Mt.10:29-30; Rom.11:33; 1Jn.3:20)
·         He is Omnipotent; able to do everything He wills. (Isa.46:9-10; Mt.19:26)
·         He is Omnipresent; everywhere, has not been, is not, will never be confined. (1Kng.8:27; Ps.139:7-12) [Though his influence is circumambient, Satan is not omnipresent. Eph.2:2]
It is essential to know The Author’s moral attributes; character traits.
·         The Author is absolutely holy. (Lev.11:44a; 1Jn.1:5; Rev.4:8)
·         The Author is absolutely just. (Zep.3:5)
·         The Author is absolutely good. (Ps.119:68; Jn.10:11; Heb.4:15; 7:26)
·         The Author loves, He is absolute love. (Jn.3:16; Rom.5:8; 1Jn.4:8-10)
·         The Author does not just tell the truth, He is absolute Truth. (Deut.32:4; Jn.14:6)
As men and women we all practice measured craft of careful pretense, fearful of others completely knowing our heart. God is not so for He is love without reticence, pure and holy with nothing to hide. How glad I am that it is possible to know The Author of The Absolutely Most Beneficial Book, the Bible; most beneficial when we forget not who and what The Author was, is, and always will be.

To fail to study apart from this knowledge is failure to gain all He has for us.  EBB4

BIBLE STUDY -- THE WHYS OF IT

BIBLE STUDY – THE WHYS OF IT
Sunday, September 13, 2015

John [GW] chapter 5 [Jesus explained] … I can't do anything on my own. As I listen to the Father, I make my judgments. My judgments are right because I don't try to do what I want but what the one who sent me wants. "If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn't true. Someone else testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true. You sent people to John the Baptizer, and he testified to the truth. But I don't depend on human testimony. I'm telling you this to save you. John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light. But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John's testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me. The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form. So you don't have the Father's message within you, because you don't believe in the person he has sent. You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf. Yet, you don't want to come to me to get eternal life.
2Timothy [GW] 3:14-17 [Paul explaining to young Timothy]  However, continue in what you have learned and found to be true. You know who your teachers were. From infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures. They have the power to give you wisdom so that you can be saved through faith in Christ Jesus. Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them are useful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a life that has God's approval. They equip God's servants so that they are completely prepared to do good things.

The major reason to study God’s Word is to personally know of Him. It isn’t just He has the answers we need, He is The Answer. Without God’s salvation through Lord Jesus Christ as trusted Savior, studying and living by His Word merely makes for improved individual, but counts for naught eternally. (Jn.5:39; Heb.10:14-22) With blessed assurance “let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith”.
2. To reverence; honor and glorify God: Ecc.12:13 “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God, and keep His commandments. For this is the whole duty of man.”
3. To grow spiritually: 1Pet.2:1-3 “Therefore laying aside all malice and all guile and hypocrisies and envyings, and all evil speakings, desire the sincere milk of the Word, as newborn babes, so that you may grow by it; if truly you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”
4. To gain superior guidance: Ps.119; Rom.8:14-15 “Through Your Commandments I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. … For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die. But if you through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption by which we cry, Abba, Father!”
5. To gain blessings and courage: Rom.15:4 “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, so that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.”
6. To gain defense: Eph.6:10-18 “Finally, my brothers, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the world's rulers, of the darkness of this age, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Therefore take to yourselves the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Therefore stand, having your loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, take the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching to this very thing with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.” (Also note Mt.4:1-10)
7. To effectively answer, teach and counsel others: Col.3:16; 2Tim. 2:1-2; 1Pet.3:15 “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. … Therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit the same to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. … sanctify [consecrate, make sacred] the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear;”
8. To recognize and verify truth versus falsehoods: Acts 17:11 “And these [at Berea] were more noble than those of Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily to see if those things were so.”
9. To stand approved and pleasing to our King: 2Tim.2:15-16 “Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. But shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.” (Also note 2Pet.3:17-18)
10. And to discover what God has for you personally!

DOES the BIBLE MATTER TODAY?

DOES THE BIBLE MATTER TODAY?
Friday, September 11, 2015

Proverbs [NLT] 1:7 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
2Corinthians 5:17 So that if any one is in Christ, that one is a new creature; old things have passed away;
behold, all things have become new.

Vishal Mangalwadi is the author of "The Book That Made Your World: How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization." (Thomas Nelson) On April 13, 2011, he also wrote a brief essay on the topic for Fox News; Does the Bible Matter In the 21st Century? http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2011/04/13/does-bible-matter-21st-century/?cmpid=cmty_email_Gigya_Does_the_Bible_Matter_In_the_21st_Century%3F
  Does the Bible matter today?
It does to me. It does to others. It does to young man David.
David was raised by gentle Christian parents that exemplify God’s Way.
But, like Adam, parent nor environment mattered naught when David reached what he considered age of personal freedom.
After stumbling around for a few years, David took a look in the mirror and didn’t like what he saw.
Knowing what He says, David decided to agree with God.
David is now an avid 2Timothy 2:15 workman. David is now teachable. David seeks God’s wisdom from God’s Word, knowledgeable family (His older sister, USA and overseas missionary, is ecstatic.), friends, and elders. David’s life is quite different these days as he seeks to and yields his will to God.
The Book of Proverbs is David’s favorite. In reading and studying Scripture, he has made exciting discoveries that further his Romans 12:1-3 rethinking. “Did you know that Jesus mentioned or referred to Proverbs 40 or more times?!”
One Sunday David handed me a manila file folder. On several pages he had typed his discovery of the precept recorded in 1Corinthians 1:24; that Christ is the power and wisdom of God.
  Does the Bible matter today?
Only if we individually reverence Sovereign God and personally agree to let the Word reign in our lives. Then shall our godliness be salt and light for others stumbling thru days.  EBB4

BIBLE STUDY -- INTERPRETATION & APPLICATION

BIBLE STUDY – INTERPRETATION & APPLICATION
Thursday, September 10, 2015

Acts 17:10-12 And the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. They, when they arrived, went into the synagogue of the Jews. And these were more noble than those of Thessalonica, in that they received the Word with all readiness of mind and searched the Scriptures daily to see if those things were so. Therefore many of them believed, and quite a few of honorable Greek women and men.

Though there is but one interpretation of Scripture verse, there may be many applications. 1Corinthians 8:9-13 is a perfect example; roast beef then, _________ now, _________ tomorrow.
I like Brother Cadfael mysteries on PBS, and have enjoyed the entire fictional but historically accurate BBC series of murder mysteries. Cadfael is a 12th century Welsh Benedictine monk living at Shrewsbury Abbey in western England during the destructive civil war for the crown of England between King Stephen and Empress Maud.
One interesting thing to us is the superstitious manner in which the population along with most of the Abbey monks make decisions, including those pertaining to innocence or guilt. A popular method being blindfolding, letting the pulpit Bible flop open, then having the person put their finger on page; the verse often requiring religious leaders’ interpretation of application to the situation. Hilarious unless we consider how frequently life or death was decided by this method.
Of course erudite Christians today don’t act so foolishly, do they?
Ever heard the one about the Christian, already of low opinion of himself, depressed after reading the latest scientific findings on self-esteem?
Thinking he should probably do a bit of Bible reading to look for solace, he remembered how Granny did so when she was troubled. Standing in his grimy home before his shabby dirty kitchen table piled high with cockroachs roaming he held his Bible, closed his eyes and let it drop. Slowly, ever so slowly, he lowered his finger until it touched a page. Opening his eyes expectantly, he read “He departed and went and hung himself.”
Puzzled, he recalled Granny at times like this repeating her trusted procedure, so he did so.
This time “Then Jesus said, ‘Go and do likewise.’”
By this time quite nervous about his prospects, he thought “One more try ought to do it.”
And what did he point to? “Then Jesus said to him, ‘What you do, do quickly.” L
For those of you that are ill today, especially with the current creeping crude, would it improve hope of recovery were you to eyes-closed point-method read “In vain you will use many medicines; you shall not be cured.”?
Though over decades I personally have met some using this old method, more common flawed practice is preconceived “apple” ideas, often from grannies in our life, and the biggie: less than “noble” lackadaisical attitude toward Bible study including principles of interpretation (hermeneutics).
Search for personal application we may and very well should.
And then there’s verses like 2Timothy 2:15 that have but one basic interpretation and application; work.  EBB4

PS. To illustrate the opening DT paragraph: In the good olde days beer came in bottles. Way back then a pastor friend loved going fishing on his day off, taking lunch and cold soda in his little boat. When breweries started canning beer he had to stop drinking from cans as the dry Christians on the lake shores would think him partaking of alcohol and it would adversely affect his ministry in that county.

MUST TRUST JESUS?

MUST TRUST JESUS?
Wednesday, September 09, 2015

After reading yesterday’s DT, UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE 202, some readers wrote me that they were confused. Here’s a composite of their question: “But don’t we have to accept Jesus in order to be saved?” and “What about the people before Jesus came, lived here, was crucified, buried, resurrected, and is now in heaven making intercession for those that trust Him?”
To answer let us go back to understanding God’s answer for these questions. The answer is throughout Scripture OT and NT. Hebrews chapter 11 clearly answers the questions. Please read the whole chapter, preferably read all of Hebrews. For you convenience I have underlined and bolded the concise one-line answer.

Hebrews [GW] 11:1  Faith assures us of things we expect and convinces us of the existence of things we cannot see. 2  God accepted our ancestors because of their faith. 3  Faith convinces us that God created the world through his word. This means what can be seen was made by something that could not be seen. 4  Faith led Abel to offer God a better sacrifice than Cain's sacrifice. Through his faith Abel received God's approval, since God accepted his sacrifices. Through his faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead. 5  Faith enabled Enoch to be taken instead of dying. No one could find him, because God had taken him. Scripture states that before Enoch was taken, God was pleased with him. 6  No one can please God without faith. Whoever goes to God must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who seek him. 7  Faith led Noah to listen when God warned him about the things in the future that he could not see. He obeyed God and built a ship to save his family. Through faith Noah condemned the world and received God's approval that comes through faith. 8  Faith led Abraham to obey when God called him to go to a place that he would receive as an inheritance. Abraham left his own country without knowing where he was going. 9  Faith led Abraham to live as a foreigner in the country that God had promised him. He lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who received the same promise from God.  10  Abraham was waiting for the city that God had designed and built, the city with permanent foundations. 11  Faith enabled Abraham to become a father, even though he was old and Sarah had never been able to have children. Abraham trusted that God would keep his promise. 12  Abraham was as good as dead. Yet, from this man came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the grains of sand on the seashore. 13  All these people died having faith. They didn't receive the things that God had promised them, but they saw these things coming in the distant future and rejoiced. They acknowledged that they were living as strangers with no permanent home on earth. 14  Those who say such things make it clear that they are looking for their own country. 15  If they had been thinking about the country that they had left, they could have found a way to go back. 16  Instead, these men were longing for a better country-a heavenly country. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God. He has prepared a city for them. 17  When God tested Abraham, faith led him to offer his son Isaac. Abraham, the one who received the promises from God, was willing to offer his only son as a sacrifice. 18  God had said to him, "Through Isaac your descendants will carry on your name." 19  Abraham believed that God could bring Isaac back from the dead. Abraham did receive Isaac back from the dead in a figurative sense. 20  Faith led Isaac to bless Jacob and Esau. 21  While Jacob was dying, faith led him to bless each of Joseph's sons. He leaned on the top of his staff and worshiped God. 22  While Joseph was dying, faith led him to speak about the Israelites leaving Egypt and give them instructions about burying his bones. 23  Faith led Moses' parents to hide him for three months after he was born. They did this because they saw that Moses was a beautiful baby and they were not afraid to disobey the king's order. 24  When Moses grew up, faith led him to refuse to be known as a son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25  He chose to suffer with God's people rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a little while. 26  He thought that being insulted for Christ would be better than having the treasures of Egypt. He was looking ahead to his reward. 27  Faith led Moses to leave Egypt without being afraid of the king's anger. Moses didn't give up but continued as if he could actually see the invisible God. 28  Faith led Moses to establish the Passover and spread the blood on the doorposts so that the destroying angel would not kill the firstborn sons. 29  Faith caused the people to go through the Red Sea as if it were dry land. The Egyptians also tried this, but they drowned. 30  Faith caused the walls of Jericho to fall after the Israelites marched around them for seven days. 31  Faith led the prostitute Rahab to welcome the spies as friends. She was not killed with those who refused to obey God. 32  What more should I say? I don't have enough time to tell you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. 33  Through faith they conquered kingdoms, did what God approved, and received what God had promised. They shut the mouths of lions, 34  put out raging fires, and escaped death. They found strength when they were weak. They were powerful in battle and defeated other armies. 35  Women received their loved ones back from the dead. Other believers were brutally tortured but refused to be released so that they might gain eternal life. 36  Some were made fun of and whipped, and some were chained and put in prison. 37  Some were stoned to death, sawed in half, and killed with swords. Some wore the skins of sheep and goats. Some were poor, abused, and mistreated. 38  The world didn't deserve these good people. Some wandered around in deserts and mountains and lived in caves and holes in the ground. 39  All these people were known for their faith, but none of them received what God had promised. 40  God planned to give us something very special so that we would gain eternal life with them.

Note: In numerous other versions you will see “perfect” in verse 40. In the Greek it means completed, consummate”.

Now do you understand?

UNDERSTANDING the BIBLE 202

UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE 202
Tuesday, September 08, 2015

Galatians GW 3:13-17 Christ paid the price to free us from the curse that God's laws bring by becoming cursed instead of us. Scripture says, "Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed." Christ paid the price so that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to all the people of the world through Jesus Christ and we would receive the promised Spirit through faith. Brothers and sisters, let me use an example from everyday life. No one can cancel a person's will or add conditions to it once that will is put into effect. The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his descendant. Scripture doesn't say, "descendants," referring to many, but "your descendant," referring to one. That descendant is Christ. This is what I mean: The laws given to Moses 430 years after God had already put his promise to Abraham into effect didn't cancel the promise to Abraham.

Some in the past, yet now, and will in the future think salvation gained differently under Old Testament law. Salvation is by faith through God’s grace; always has been, is, always will be. The truth of Ephesians 2:8-9 is not new fact, it is eternally thus in and by God’s grace. The law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. (Galatians chapter 3)
A few indispensable facts necessary to understanding Scripture and pleasing God:

The Old Testament began what the New Testament completes.
The Old is associated with Moses, the New with Christ Jesus.
“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” (Jn.1:17)
Jehovah God, Sovereign Creator and Sustainer, as All is Author of all.
God’s scribes included kings, princes, poets, philosophers, prophets, statesmen …
Some learned, other unschooled.
The Bible, Old and New, speaks through the ages to all ages and cultures.
The Old begins with God. (Gen.1:1)
The New begins with Christ. (Mt.1:1)

If we neglect or discount these basic truths, we do so at our peril.  EBB4

was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and without Him not
even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the
light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.
Colossians 1:16-17 For all things were created in Him, the things in the heavens, and the things on the
earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers, all
things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and by Him all things
               consist.
2Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly
               furnished to every good work.
2Peter [GW]chapter 1 … When we apostles told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
we didn't base our message on clever myths that we made up. Rather, we witnessed his majesty
with our own eyes. … we regard the words of the prophets as confirmed beyond all doubt.
You're doing well by paying attention to their words. Continue to pay attention as you would to
a light that shines in a dark place as you wait for day to come and the morning star to rise in
your hearts. First, you must understand this: No prophecy in Scripture is a matter of one's own
interpretation. No prophecy ever originated from humans. Instead, it was given by the Holy
Spirit as humans spoke under God's direction.

I begin with a cautionary note: When serious about studying God’s Word, and diligently doing so, do not leapfrog over the basic. Doing so complicates and leaves one completely lacking as would be so if not understanding 2x2=4 et al and attempting to do more advanced math.
Jehovah God is the Author of the Bible. Over approximately 1600 years a number of men were his chosen scribes penning 66 books containing His message to mankind.
If we can’t accept this point as fact then we do not trusting Him as Sovereign Creator and Sustainer. Not trusting Him as Ultimate Sovereign Superior establishing and preserving what He wills; we then are in selective Jeffersonian manner interpreting and relating to God’s Word from self, not self below Him.
How we answer the question “Am I relating The Word to my life, or my life to The Word?” reveals all about trust issue.
Another helpful way to understand this is answering “Do I see life through the lens of God’s Word . . . or do I see God’s Word through the lens of my life?”

If our answers reflect that we don’t view God as Omnipotent (ultimately absolutely all-powerful), Omniscient (ultimately absolutely all-knowing), Omnipresent (ultimately absolutely present) . . . we don’t just pick and choose from His Word cafeteria –style, we miss all He has for us.
