PROPERLY HELD DOCTRINE

APPROVAL: PROPERLY HELD DOCTRINE
Wednesday, February 28, 2018

John 3:1-21
Jesus responded to Nicodemus “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not know these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, We speak what we know and testify what we have seen. And you do not receive our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how shall you believe if I tell you heavenly things?”
Were he alive today, Nicodemus name would have had many letters behind it, for he was a very learned man, an important prominent religious and political leader, and an imminent teacher of others. His credentials were not however enough to meet the Lord’s approval.
2Timothy 2:15 study unto living with God’s approval is not simply a matter of what may be commonly accepted and respected education through seminary, denomination, college, or university. It is an individual personal responsibility; a reliance that is “more noble” (Acts 17:11; Gr. higher in ranking), than unthinking dependence of formal and/or familial education.
Nicodemus, though an erudite man, was publically personally challenged by Jesus the carpenter for relying on ingrained education in opposition to the Word. Reviewing John 3:1-21 I see:
·         Without spiritual rebirth it is impossible for man to properly understand life and death.
·         Without spiritual rebirth we cannot have the mind that Paul tells of. (1Cor.2:15-16; 2Tim.1:7)
·         Without spiritual rebirth there is no hope of proper thinking aligned with the mind of God.
·         Proper religion is not only physical.
·         Without spiritual rebirth God’s man cannot properly participate in His kingdom now or forever. (Read Mt.7:23 in context.)
·         Though publically recognized for some mastery . . . get over it, get beyond it, depend on the Omniscient Word! (Jn.1:1; logos.)
·         Without spiritual rebirth we easily muddle decision making.
·         Without spiritual rebirth we easily improperly relate our thinking to worldly criteria in opposition to thinking in heavenly ways.
·         Did you really personally study Scripture? If you had, you would have seen Me. (Much of what Jesus said during His ministry here is from the Old Testament.)
·         You need not continuing looking forward to the Messiah, I am Him . . . trust me, live now!
·         Until you are born again, just as with all such you remain dead in sin.
·         When born again through trusting Me, you will never perish, with eternal life now and forever.
·         Men never have God’s redemption on their own standing; our charity, good works, morality.
·         Men reject light, redemption, because they prefer, love, darkness (Gr. Shadiness/obscurity).
·         If we are really interested in the truth, we are openly so. (Closet Christian or Rom.10:9-11?)
But what of Nicodemus’ credentials after his visit with Jesus?
Later he defended Jesus in a meeting with the other Sanhedrin discussing what to do about the Jesus problem. But he did so in careful timid “by night” manner, only bringing out point of Jewish law. (Jn.7:50-52) Then after the crucifixion Nicodemus left the shadows and made a very public statement as to where he stood with Jesus. (Jn.19:39)
And what of us in this era of crackpot pulpiteers, Hollywood, TV, literary, water cooler and barstool mythological theologians? (2Tim.2:1-4; Tit.2:18)  EBB4

HAPPINESS AS PARENTAL GOAL?

HAPPINESS AND SUCCESS AS PARENTAL GOAL
Tuesday, February 27, 2018

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

What is the present day common primary goal in raising children?
The common goal in contemporary times is “I just want my children to grow up to be happy successful adults.” When listening to conversations on the topic or asking to define “successful”, I most often hear terms having to do with wealth, position, recognition, accomplishment, able to well provide for and take care of self and family, et al . . . all accomplished with the lowest possible levels of stress.
This goal is both consciously and inadvertently taught by numerous parents, grandparents, educational institutions, and media including TV and cinema. This goal has and does permeate our USA culture, including many Christians.
As Christian parents and grandparents this as paramount goal should never be ours in mind, emotion, vocalized or in action manifested.
·         It is contrary to God’s example.
·         It is contrary to the Word.
·         It is contrary to what our Lord expects of parents and grandparents.
·         It is contrary to what is absolutely best in child training.
·         It is and furthers the practice of idolatry. The idol being happiness and its underpinnings.
If such happiness and successfulness are not the goal, then what is?
God’s Word is very clear on this question: The end of the matter after all has been heard and read; Fear God and keep his commandments, serve Him now and forevermore for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. We are not to conform to this world’s essential life definitions. (Eccl.12:13-14; Rom.12:1-3)
Another way to put this is we are to live a life of godly character according to His direction; this by His Word; the Bible and Christ’s example; guided by His Holy Spirit.
When we as parents and grandparents demonstrate and promulgate happiness and success as life goal we are in diametric conflict with God (James 4:3-8) and confuse and mislead the children we hold great affection for. Teaching children Christian morality in home and church is controverted by the overarching teaching and manifestation of the goal of worldly happiness and success. (A question to illustrate: What is the base reason so many parents and grandparents want their children to go to college?)
Let us beware how we by emotion, word, and deeds actually train up children.

Afterthoughts: The application of today’s truth includes practice by aunts, uncles, and elder children whether biological or otherwise. Also note that living life God’s Way may or may not result in worldly happiness and success.

ACCESS DENIED?

ACCESS DENIED?
Monday, February 26, 2018

Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Dear fellow followers of Christ,
In the 55 years since trusting Jesus as personal Redeemer I’ve learned much. One of the essential keys is my Lord does not change me in areas I determinately do not permit. Indeed He is the Omnipotent All-wise Potter . . . but I am the clay. Peter, entertaining his usual feelingitis had to learn this lesson and the account contemplated is edifying.
Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him. When Jesus came to Simon Peter, Peter said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”“No,” Peter protested, “you will never ever wash my feet!”Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you won’t belong to me.”Simon Peter exclaimed, “Then wash my hands and head as well, Lord, not just my feet!” (NLT Jn.13:1-9)
Daily I must remind myself that allowing God access to change me is exercising Romans 12:1-3 worship pleasing to Him. With Him I gain maturation in increasing godliness. (Jn.15:1-5)
So, I again today ask myself the question: Access denied?
Sincerely,
Edwin Bennett Bullock 4th

PS. With the early on coaching of elder mentors I for good reason chose Psalm 32:8-9 as my life verses.

Blessedly they are ever before me.

HOW FOUND?

HOW FOUND?
Sunday, February 25, 2018

2Corinthians [GW] 5:4-21 While we are in this tent, we sigh. We feel distressed because we don't want to take off the tent, but we do want to put on the eternal house. Then eternal life will put an end to our mortal existence. God has prepared us for this and has given us his Spirit to guarantee it. So we are always confident. We know that as long as we are living in these bodies, we are living away from the Lord. Indeed, our lives are guided by faith, not by sight. We are confident and prefer to live away from this body and to live with the Lord. Whether we live in the body or move out of it, our goal is to be pleasing to him. All of us must appear in front of Christ's judgment seat. Then all people will receive what they deserve for the good or evil they have done while living in their bodies. As people who know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. God already knows what we are, and I hope that you also know what we are. We are not trying to show you our qualifications again, but we are giving you an opportunity to be proud of us. Then you can answer those who are proud of their appearance rather than their character. So if we were crazy, it was for God. If we are sane, it is for you. Clearly, Christ's love guides us. We are convinced of the fact that one man has died for all people. Therefore, all people have died. He died for all people so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for the man who died and was brought back to life for them. So from now on we don't think of anyone from a human point of view. If we did think of Christ from a human point of view, we don't anymore. Whoever is a believer in Christ is a new creation. The old way of living has disappeared. A new way of living has come into existence. God has done all this. He has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships. In other words, God was using Christ to restore his relationship with humanity. He didn't hold people's faults against them, and he has given us this message of restored relationships to tell others. Therefore, we are Christ's representatives, and through us God is calling you. We beg you on behalf of Christ to become reunited with God. God had Christ, who was sinless, take our sin so that we might receive God's approval through him.

Of late I’ve received notes expressing concern on the writers’ part that they felt as though as a serving Christian they hadn’t and weren’t accomplishing anything worthwhile.
This sort of self judging is not in line with God’s Word. Paul explained “This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.” (1Corinthians Chapter 4)
From birth on most of us are ingrained with the teaching that success is measured by statistics. Such calculating is contrary to godliness. Being found faithful stewards regardless of worldly gauging is the measure by which God measures us. Paul explained further “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.” (1Cor. Chapter 3)
Now, how shall we be found?

WORKING WITHIN AND BECAUSE OF GUARANTEED STATUS

WORKING WITHIN AND BECAUSE OF GUARANTEED STATUS
Friday, February 23, 2018

Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth [ESV chapter 3]… we are God's fellow workers. You are God's field, God's building. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you. …
To the church at Philippi [chapter 2] So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. …

In the 2 passages above it is obvious Paul is addressing believers and their assurance. With that established what do we see he is telling them then and us today?
Once we trust Jesus, becoming born again John 1:12 family, we are not to laze awaiting deliverance from this life via death or the rapture. We are to be like Jesus, sans selfish ambition, working at serving our Heavenly Father and all others all our days in authentic Romans 12:1-3 worship pleasing to Him.
Due to the deplorable condition of the Corinthian church Paul emphasizes exactly who and what Jesus is and precisely who believers are and what they are to do and not do; truth as appropriate now as was then and ever will be.
Let us not run frantically willy nilly according to the 1John 2:16 standards of this world, for we have the “mind of Christ” (1Cor.2:16; Phil.2:5; 1Pet.4:1).

… you ought to put off the old man (according to your way of living before) who is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind. And you should put on the new man, who according to God was created in righteousness and true holiness. Therefore putting away lying, let each man speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down upon your wrath, neither give place to the Devil. Let him who stole steal no more, but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, so that he may have something to give to him who needs. Let not any filthy word go out of your mouth, but if any is good to building up in respect of need, that it may give grace to the ones hearing. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you are sealed until the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and tumult and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you. [MKJV Ephesians chapter 4] … the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal: "The Lord knew those who are His." And, "Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity!" [2Timothy 2:19]

  Relationship > followship > fellowship.
For a John 3:3 “born again” individual they are authoritatively a member of God’s family: “… as many as received Him, He gave to them authority [Strong’s Greek1849ἐξουσία; exousia; ex-oo-see'-ah
From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: - authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength. ] to become the children of God, to those who believe on His name, who were born, not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but were born of God.” (Jn.1:12-13) Our position “in Christ” is therefore sealed for eternity.
Relationship being completely and ultimately by God, followship effecting fellowship with Him and our fellow man, both John 1:12 family or not, is our responsibility to exercise and implement in our position as sons and daughters. Affected godly activity by and from our position “in Christ” is empowered or discounted by our attitude. James explained this truth: “A person who has doubts shouldn't expect to receive anything from the Lord. A person who has doubts is thinking about two different things at the same time and can't make up his mind about anything.” (GW chapter 1)
Affecting family relationship unto followship and fellowship is true worship pleasing God.

RENT WHAT?

REPENT WHAT?
Wednesday, February 21, 2018

“repent” is 23 times in 22 OT verses. 24 in 22 NT verses. “repentance” is 25 in 25 in NT, only once in OT  John the Baptist emphasized “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” From Jesus’ first preaching and continuing thereafter he stated “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Mt.3:2; 4:17) Jesus pointed out “except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” (Lk.13:1-5) Hence repentance is essential exercise.
There are those that ask with genuine concern sans defensive pride “But what am I to repent of?” - their life not being a sinful swamp.
We could simply quote Romans 3:23 “… all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, but would it be a fully edifying response? I say no, for it is only the beginning of understanding the why and wherefore of godly repentance. It is far better to explain the meaning of “repent”: to rethink the meaning of life and thereby act accordingly.
This then would be a time to have the inquirer read an explaining translation like God’s Word (GW Mt.3:2; 4:17) "Turn to God and change the way you think and act, because the kingdom of heaven is near!" and then follow with Romans 12:1-3 that explains Christian repentance in more detail. “Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God's compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. Don't become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants-what is good, pleasing, and perfect. Because of the kindness that God has shown me, I ask you not to think of yourselves more highly than you should. Instead, your thoughts should lead you to use good judgment based on what God has given each of you as believers.”
Repent of what? Particular sins, yes, but centrally of self . . . that which goes far above and beyond anything I may deny self of for lent.

CONSTANT EXERCISE

CONSTANT EXERCISE
Tuesday, February 20, 2018

Romans [ESV] 12:1-3 I therefore urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercies, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices that are holy and pleasing to God, for this is the reasonable way for you to worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but continually be transformed by the renewing of your minds so that you may be able to determine what God's will is—what is proper, pleasing, and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I ask every one of you not to think of yourself more highly than you should think, rather to think of yourself with sober judgment on the measure of faith that God has assigned each of you.

The 3 verses above are persistently on my heart.
Christine is a young woman I’ve known since she was a child. She exercises. I don’t mean she emulates my park-at-the-far-end-of-store-lot regimen. Christine exercises!! And the benefits she enjoys are obvious. I applaud Christine
God’s Word addresses the topic of physical exercise: “… bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (ESV 1Tim.4:8)
This is not condemnation of physical exercise. It is exhortation toward a life-order always keeping an eternal perspective of prioritizing utmost values; that which pleases God and benefits others in the greatest way.

DEMONSTRATING TRUTH WORKS

DEMONSTRATING TRUTH WORKS
Monday, February 19, 2018

        Jonah chapters 1-4
1Timothy [GW] 4:10-15 [Paul exhorting Timothy] Certainly, we work hard and struggle to live a godly life, because we place our confidence in the living God. He is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. Insist on these things and teach them. Don't let anyone look down on you for being young. Instead, make your speech, behavior, love, faith, and purity an example for other believers. Until I get there, concentrate on reading Scripture in worship, giving encouraging messages, and teaching people.
Don't neglect the gift which you received through prophecy when the spiritual leaders placed their hands on you to ordain you. Practice these things. Devote your life to them so that everyone can see your progress.
2Timothy 2:1-2 [Paul’s 2nd letter to Timothy] My child, find your source of strength in the
kindness of Christ Jesus. You've heard my message, and it's been confirmed by many witnesses. Entrust
this message to faithful individuals who will be competent to teach others.

Jonah was an angry resentful believer resisting the will of God for the people of Niniveh. Under severe duress, with great reluctance he delivered God’s Truth. Those hearing repented. Was it because of Jonah’s eloquence and friendly orations? Not at all, for regardless of whom or how delivered “… the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in His sight, but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.” (MKJV Heb.4:12-13; also note 1Cor.2:4)
This is not however to say demeanor doesn’t matter in or relationship with the Lord. It does.
Several years ago on Facebook Keith Jenkins shared something that addresses the need for mature Christian demeanor for those who tell the Good News. It was, as with Paul to young Timothy, written by an older pastor to a new young pastor. Here it is as spoken to my heart.
1.       Let God speak to me through His Book.
2.       Lead by precept and example.
3.       Have a thick skin.
4.       Have a tender heart.
5.       Be teachable.
6.       Strong backbone matters.
7.       Be of diplomatic manner.
8.       Be willing to be corrected.
9.       Have and show reverent respect for the things of God.
10.   Recognize my inadequacies and deny them not.

Need we officially be a pastor on staff in a church for this list to matter for us before God? I think not. For “After all, Christ will judge each of us for the good or the bad that we do while living in these bodies.” (CEV 2Cor.5:10)  EBB4

YOUNG BUT WISE

YOUNG BUT WISE
Friday, February 16, 2018

Psalm [GW] 111:1-10 Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart in the company of decent people and in the congregation. The LORD'S deeds are spectacular. They should be studied by all who enjoy them. His work is glorious and majestic. His righteousness continues forever. He has made his miracles unforgettable. The LORD is merciful and compassionate. He provides food for those who fear him. He always remembers his promise. He has revealed the power of his works to his people by giving them the lands of other nations as an inheritance. His works are done with truth and justice. All his guiding principles are trustworthy. They last forever and ever. They are carried out with truth and decency. He has sent salvation to his people. He has ordered that his promise should continue forever. His name is holy and terrifying. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. Good sense is shown by everyone who follows God's guiding principles. His praise continues forever.
Proverbs 24:3-4 With wisdom a house is built. With understanding it is established. With knowledge its rooms are filled with every kind of riches, both precious and pleasant.
Luke 11:10-12 Everyone who asks will receive. The one who searches will find, and for the person who knocks, the door will be opened. "If your child asks you, his father, for a fish, would you give him a snake instead? Or if your child asks you for an egg, would you give him a scorpion?

Sharing the wise words of a young female friend: “LADIES…. you have the same body parts every other woman has. He can easily get that somewhere else. What he can’t get is someone who has that unique personality and that LOVE only you can display. That heart that's whole, kind, loving, caring and full of loyalty. Your personality, your heart posture is what will keep that man, not your body.”  K.R.

K.R. has and continues to work hard at professional standing. She completed a master’s degree while working fulltime in her career field. More importantly, though very busy she does not neglect seeking her Master’s wisdom. As to which course is most difficult, possibly later she will write and tell us?
Due to the clock, these hours most of my friends are young. However, regardless of age my most valuable friends are those that continually seek the treasure of wisdom. It is even better when they courageously share the good judgment they have personally gained.
The greatest source of wisdom is God’s Word, for the Author is Omni-Wise!
“If any of you needs wisdom to know what you should do, you should ask God, and he will give it to you. God is generous to everyone and doesn't find fault with them. When you ask for something, don't have any doubts. A person who has doubts is like a wave that is blown by the wind and tossed by the sea. A person who has doubts shouldn't expect to receive anything from the Lord. A person who has doubts is thinking about two different things at the same time and can't make up his mind about anything.” (Jam.1:5-8)

KINSMAN REDEEMER

גּאל
Thursday, February 15, 2018

Ruth 4:1-22  And Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the kinsman גּאל ] ] of whom Boaz spoke came by. And he said, Such a one! Turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, Come sit down here. And they sat down. And he said to the kinsman, Naomi, who has come again out of the country of Moab, sells a parcel of land which was our brother Elimelech's. And I said I will tell it in your ear, saying, Buy it before those who live here, and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem, redeem it. But if you will not redeem, tell me so that I may know. For there is none to redeem besides you. And I am after you. And he said, I will redeem. And Boaz said, In the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must buy also from the hand of Ruth of Moab, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance. You redeem my right to yourself, for I cannot redeem. And this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, to confirm everything. A man plucked off his sandal and gave it to his neighbor. And this was a testimony in Israel.
Therefore the kinsman said to Boaz, Buy it for yourself. So he drew off his sandal. And Boaz said to the elders and all the people, You are witnesses this day that I have bought all that was Elimelech's and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, from the hand of Naomi. And also Ruth of Moab, the wife of Mahlon, I have purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead on his inheritance, so that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his place. You are witnesses this day. And all the people in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. May Jehovah make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, for these two built the house of Israel. And may you be blessed in Ephratah, and be famous in Bethlehem. And let your house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which Jehovah shall give you of this young woman.
And Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife. And when he went in to her, Jehovah made her conceive. And she bore a son. And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be Jehovah, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, so that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be to you as a restorer of life, …

The Book of Ruth gives a delightful account of love in action. The Hebrew גּאל , gâ'al; gaw-al', “kinsman-redeemer”, is a delightful word describing a committed person then and another yet to come.  EBB4

A NEW NAME WRITTEN DOWN IN GLORY?

APPELLATION, TAG, LABEL, DESIGNATION
Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Names are chosen for a number of reasons.
In some cultures past and present individuals have one name, not 2, 3, or more. Multiple names began commonly being used in the 10th century.  In some cultures of yesteryear names were not given at birth. They were given after the individual’s personality, attitude, significant characteristic or skill became obvious. Nicknaming  was a tradition in my boyhood experience with playmates and school kids.
There are names that reflect family trades or skills: Archer, Bowman, Wheelwright, Carpenter, Steelman, Cartwright/Carter, Cooper, Kegley, Gardner, Sawyer, Ward/Warder, Naylor/Nailer, Fuller, Frobisher (finisher of edged weapons) etc.
There are names chosen or given that reflect a trait: Strongman/Armstrong, Turnbull, Crippen (curly haired), Moore (dark complexioned), Russell (redheaded) etc.
There are names that were established by actual or hoped for association with animals: Crow, Bullock, Cowman, Beeman, Marshall (keeper of the horses) etc.
There are names linked with places. Donegal, French, Ireland, Hudson, Paris, Robinhood (Robin in the hood; especially interesting is “hood” didn’t begin with today’s street gang culture.) etc.
Personality names are especially interesting: Angry Woman, He Who Weeps, Quiet One, Lazy Boy etc.
Some names are used or carried forward traditionally. My name is such as I am the 4th. There is a 5th and 6th.
Some names are chosen for their sound and have no particular meaning.
Names are chosen for their meaning. Though our son has a passed down traditional name Edwin Bennett Bullock, each having definition, we did not choose for the meanings. Our 3 daughters names were chosen for the meanings: Like the brightness of morning in a garden of holly; Born-again Christian; Flower of Scotland born at Christmas time. (From marriage file: Ann and I didn’t struggle with or argue over names.)
For those trusting Lord Jesus Christ, in heaven they will receive a new name from God. (Rev.2:17; 3:12)
How is our new name chosen . . . by how diligently we live by The Word? I don’t know, but considering the record of Matthew 4:4 I do suspect so.  EBB4

PS. On the nicknaming business: Did you have a nickname as child or youth? Mine was “Sunny”. How would you tag yourself today? What nickname if any does your family, coworkers, neighbors have for you? If you had a nickname as a child or teen, has it changed? As a follower of Christ what may your new name be?

DEPENDING ON GOD'S DELIVERANCE

DEPENDING ON GOD’S DELIVERANCE
Tuesday, February 13, 2018

Hebrews 11

The Bible tells of many instances of God’s physical deliverance of individuals and groups.
  Indeed He is Deliverer.
We must not however focus on physical deliverance in all circumstance, for though He intends us no harm, the greater does no revolve around the lesser. This is true whether individual, group, even nation.
Though at times expended, He never leaves or forsakes us. (Deut.31:6; Jos.1:5; 1Chron.28:20; Heb.13:5) Please particularly note this in the 23rd Psalm: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”
In depending on God’s deliverance let us not think it will always be physical. We will suffer loss. We may be injured. We may become (and possibly remain) ill. Unless He returns in our lifetime, we will die.
I close this morning offering you a reading from Romans chapter 8.
“And if we are children, then we are heirs; heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ; so that if we suffer with Him, we may also be glorified together. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the coming glory to be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation waits for the manifestation of the sons of God. For the creation was not willingly subjected to vanity, but because of Him who subjected it on hope that the creation itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
And we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. And not only so, but ourselves also, who have the firstfruit of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, awaiting the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope. But hope that is seen is not hope; for what anyone sees, why does he also hope for it?
But if we hope for that which we do not see, then we wait for it with patience. Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. He searching the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, for Him to be the First-born among many brothers. But whom He predestinated, these He also called; and whom He called, those He also justified. And whom He justified, these He also glorified. (Rom.8:26-28)
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? (Rom.8:31)
Truly He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he condemning? It is Christ who has died, but rather also who is raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, "For Your sake we are killed all the day long. We are counted as sheep of slaughter." [Ps.44, verse 22] But in all these things we more than conquer through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom.8:32-39)

A COMMUNIQUE

A COMMUNIQUÉ
Friday, February 09, 2018

God is Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent . . . and the Omni-Communicator. On the latter attribute, some would say “Not so!” as they consider His Word difficult to comprehend in KJV or any other version. I have observed a sudden initial comprehension on individuals’ part when they decided to agree with and trust God. (I consider this change from bewilderment to blessedness as one of the marks of being a Christian.)
  What is this blessedness?
Reading and pondering with personal application pleases God.
Reliance on His Communiqué is presently and ultimately beneficial.
For your convenience, using English of ESV I present a few pertinent passages from The Word:

Joshua 1:7-8 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Psalm 1:1-3; 19:7-9 Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. … The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether.

Isaiah 40:6-8 A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the LORD blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. [1Pet.1:24]

Matthew 5:14-18 [Jesus said]  "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

2Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

2Peter 1:16-21 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased," we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

UNSETTLED SURETY

UNSETTLED SURETY
Thursday, February 08, 2018

Today’s title is an absurdity held to by a high percentage of professing Christians believing there is more than one way to heaven but actually you won’t know until you die. I am not a member of that incongruous statistical survey group. The veracity of God’s Word living (Jn.1:1) and written, the Bible, openly declares there is but one Way and that He provides knowing assurance.
Jesus stated “I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. … I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (ESV Jn.14:3, 6) The same apostle, John, that recorded these words, explained:
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. (1Jn.2:3-5)
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. … But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. … If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him. (1Jn.2:18, 20, 21, 29)
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. … And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin. … We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. … Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. … And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. … And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. (1Jn.3:2, 5, 14, 15, 19, 24)
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: … We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. … Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. (1Jn.4:2, 6, 13)
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. … These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. … And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. … We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.(1Jn.5:2, 13, 15, 18-20)
This truth leaves us with a serious eternal question: If we believe there is more than one way to heaven, aren’t we denying the Way we as a professing Christian say we believe in?

"HAVE A GOOD DAY"?

“HAVE A GOOD DAY”?

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Ask a non-Christian to define a good day and you will typically get:
·         A day that I feel good emotionally and physically.
·         A day that runs smoothly without a lot of stress.
·         A day, successful, that I accomplish goals.
·         A day that I get respect, recognition and appreciation.
Ask a Christian the same question and you will typically get the same answers.
It is not a good day and will never be a good day for professing Christians that think like this, yours truly included!
A good day for a Christian is when whatever happens or does not happen is seen and thought of as the Lord’s day with our fulfilling our mandate to live and rejoice in it! Psalm 118:24 “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
A few items that I see as essential to a good day for God’s children:
·         That we exercise healthy reverence (fear & appreciation) for God. (Ex.20:3; Mt.22:33-40)
·         That we gain wisdom. (Job 12:12; Proverbs et al)
·         That we trust that any understanding to be had is through and by God. (Job 28:12-28)
·         That any understanding can only be realized as we depart from evil. (Job 28:28; James 1:5-8)
·         That we don’t demand present understanding of all events. (Job 38:1-41; Isaiah 55)
·         That we accept all days as His day. (Ps.118:24a)
·         That we see God in it. (Ps.118:24)
·         That regardless of events we rejoice in it. (Ps.118:24b; Phil.4:4)
·         That understanding comes by circumspect fear and love. (Prov.1:7; 2Pet.3:10-11; 1Jn.4:1-21)
·         That we live knowing that life is not about “bread alone”. (Mt.4:4a; Phil.4:11-13)
·         That we manifest living by God’s Word. (Mt.4:4b)
·         That we relate to our fellow man with godliness. (Mt.22:38-39)
·         That we act and react as those indwelt by God’s Holy Spirit. (Jn.1:12; Gal.5:22,23; Eph.5:9)
·         That we don’t make it about us. (Phil.4:5)
·         That we give every care over to God. (Phil.4:6; 1Pet.5:7)
·         That we thereby experience God’s peace. (Phil.4:7,9; 1Tim.2:2))
·         That we fix our thoughts on all that is right and good. (Phil.4:8)
·         That we always check options first with The Guide. (Phil.4:13; 2Tim.3:16-17)
·         That, like them or not, we pray for our leaders. (1Tim.2:2)
·         That we study to show ourselves equipped and approved by God, the Ultimate Judge. (2Tim.2:14-16; 3:16-17; Heb.9:27;11:6)
·         That we seek believer’s maturation in it. (Heb.5:12-14; James 1:2-4; 1Pet.2:1-3)
·         That it does not hinge on our getting respect, recognition, and appreciation. (James 1:9-11)

So, dear brother or sister in Christ, how now do we define a good day?  EBB4

AN IMMENSE STORY

AN IMMENSE STORY
Tuesday, February 06, 2018

John [MKJV] 10:14-15; 15:12-14 I am the Good Shepherd, and I know those that are Mine, and I am known by those who are Mine. Even as the Father knows Me, I also know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep. … This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.
1John 3:18-21 My children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And in this we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him, that if our heart accuses us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not accuse us, we have confidence toward God.

How many have seen the movie TITANIC? A considerable number have viewed it multiple times. My first exposure to the story was when quite young reading nonfiction book at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Hamilton, Baltimore, Maryland. Later I read more nonfiction and fictional accounts. Plus, growing up, the Titanic, Custer’s Last Stand, USA Civil War, and other such historical events were common topics of discussion and debate.
TITANIC is quite the tale of monumental pride, impatience, greed, wretched disaster, poignancy, enduring romance and sacrifice. Beyond what was scripted it is also tale of Christ-like love.
On May 29, 1872, John Harper was born in a Scotland village. Raised in a Christian family, he trusted Jesus as personal Savior at age 14 and was preacher at 18, supporting himself by doing manual labor.
At age 25 he was made pastor of the 25 member Paisley Road Baptist Church in Glasgow. With his leadership and impassioned Bible preaching the church grew to 500. During his time there as pastor his wife died, leaving him to care for their young daughter.
Recognized as a blessing, he was invited to preach at Moody Church in Chicago, Illinois, USA, investing 3 months there doing so. Experiencing revival, they asked him to later return. Pastor Harper arranged for himself, 6 year old daughter Annie Jessie and niece Jessie W. Leitch to travel to America on the passenger liner Lusitania, then felt directed by God to leave a week later on a new trans-Atlantic liner, the Titanic.
As the “unsinkable” Titanic began sinking April 14, 1912, he wrapped his daughter in a blanket and saw to it that she and his niece were safe in a lifeboat.
Harper then gave his lifejacket to another passenger. One survivor distinctly remembers him shouting “Women, children, and the unsaved into the lifeboats!” He then ran the decks pleading with people to turn to Christ and called upon the ship’s orchestra to play “Nearer, My God, To Thee”.
Several times he gathered a group, and “with holy joy” as his countenance was described, prayed for them.
Later, survivors testified that as the Titanic went low Harper jumped overboard and swimming to all he could he asked “Are you saved?” sharing the gospel focusing on Acts 16:31.
John Harper was 39 years of age when the frigid water drained his physical life away.
Dear brethren in Christ, and what of us as we sit high and dry? Do we see this world as Titanic with people all around us dying without God’s salvation?
