IT'S DUCKY

IT IS DUCKY
Thursday, January 31, 2019

It’s “duct”, not “duck”, but ask any real man and you’ll see that he believes it to be quite ducky in its unlimited uses. A bit  of history from wikipedia, February 10, 1943: “The idea for what became duct tape came from Vesta Stoudt, an ordnance-factory worker and mother of two Navy sailors, who worried that problems with ammunition box seals would cost soldiers precious time in battle. She wrote to President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943 with the idea to seal the boxes with a fabric tape, which she had tested at her factory. The letter was forwarded to the War Production Board, who put Johnson & Johnson on the job.” And now we take the valuable ribbon for granted. (There are multiple rolls available at strategic locations in my home.)
  So what’s the point today?
Details involving life-saving matters are important. (Song 2:15)

MORE THAN SOAP

MORE THAN SOAP
Wednesday, January 30, 2019

What I shared yesterday was about more than soap and water.

1.       Preachers, teachers, I say or write believing we are presenting the truth. As hearers you/we are responsible to be Bereans that personally research and verify as to whether it is God’s Truth. (Acts.17:11)
2.       I again reminded you of certain essential matters. (2Tim.2:14)
3.       As Christians we are ultimately responsible for being “approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.” (Gen.2:25; 3:7; 2Tim.2:16-16)
4.       And I gently urged acquiring WHERE TO FIND IT IN THE BIBLE, The Ultimate A to Z Resource, by Ken Anderson (ISBN 0-7852-1157-8) The book ($13.99 + 3.99 S & H at CBD. Stock #WW11578) and other helpful literature can be acquired at CBD https://www.christianbook.com/apps/checkout/main

May God bless and use us richly this day as we endeavor to live pleasing to Him.

HYGIENIC BELIEVERS

HYGIENIC BELIEVERS
Tuesday, January 29, 2019

I well remember Grandmother McGee stating firmly “I will be checking behind you ears.” Then we’d groan and she’d firmly respond “Cleanliness is next to godliness.”
Is that adage based in God’s Word, or is it a folksy way of getting outdoor loving dirtballs to launder? In my lifetime I’ve heard 2 ministers proclaim it has no basis in Scripture. I’ll let you decide by looking up and reviewing Bible verses on cleanliness from WHERE TO FIND IT IN THE BIBLE, The Ultimate A To Z Resource, by Ken Anderson (ISBN 0-7852-1157-8).

Deuteronomy [MKJV] chapter 5 … be careful to do as Jehovah your God has commanded you. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the ways which Jehovah your God has commanded you so that you may live and that good may be to you, and you may make your days longer in the land which you shall possess.
Luke 11:34-36 [Jesus explained] The light of the body is the eye. Therefore when your eye is sound, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light in you is not darkness. Therefore if your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the shining of a lamp enlightens you.

While traveling through life it’s very easy to lose focus by worrying about what going on around us. Consider the following Pew Research survey on the religious beliefs in USA Congress, individuals sworn in with their hand on various books; the Bible, Jeffersonian bible, Quran, Buddhist sutra, Hindu Vedas, law books, State constitutions. 250 of 252 Republicans identified as Christian, 2 being Jewish. 61 of the 282 Democrats don’t identify as Christians. 32 are Jewish. 3 are Muslims. 3 are Hindus. 2 are Buddhists. 2 are Unitarian Universalists. 1 is “none”. Among the professing Christians on both sides of the aisle, there is a mix of denominational affiliations. And then there’s discordant covert and overt wheeling and dealing. Throw in our pot stirring president and it’s easy to slip into being possessed by worry . . . or being occupied with amusement.
As professing followers of the John 14:6 Way, Truth, and Life we are to live undistracted believing that Sovereign God knows all and rules. We see this in Old and New Biblical record. Indeed in our physical sight things are chaotic, but we are to see as God exemplifies in His Word, by His Son, and His Holy Spirit within us.
Let us trust Him, for we are but sojourners before Jehovah God Almighty, as all our fathers were: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no permanence here. (1Chron.29:15) All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of men as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls out, but the Word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the Word preached as gospel to you. (Jam.1:24-25)

GATHERED IN HIS NAME

GATHERED IN HIS NAME
Sunday, January 27, 2019

Matthew 18:19-20 Again I [Jesus] say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Several years ago I spent a week at a lake with one of my cousins. As we were driving down there we decided that at mealtime we would take turns saying grace.
The first meal she prayed and we ate. The next meal I prayed and immediately after I said “Amen” she started praying. This routine continued the rest of the week with her adding a postscript each time it was my turn to pray.
It was never mentioned, but I do know that every other meal there could be no doubt that there were two of us gathered in His name. It was a sweet experience! She had been diagnosed with cancer and I had been alone only a short time so those moments of holding hands and lifting each other up in prayer gave each of us the added strength and faith we needed at that time in our lives.

1Thessalonians [ESV] 5:22-24 Abstain from every form of evil. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

As a result of my inattentiveness, yesterday I erred. But personally such events now turn out differently.
My old story: There would be angst; regret, guilt, shame plus memorable historical blunderings added to the resultant distracting mess. And there would be digestive problems.
My blessed new story: Decades ago I was schooled by a few Christian mentors that had had like reactions that hindered their overall health in body, soul, and spirit. They introduced me to God’s provision of love and mercy; accepting His forgiveness leading to peace with confidence. They also emphasized the importance of applying Philippians 3:13. Not long after an addict introduced me to the summarizing Serenity Prayer, which out of necessity I apply daily.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next. Amen.
Have you been traveling a path paved with sidetracking angst? Look to God’s Word Living and written. Trust Him. He is faithful in providing the way of deliverance and even edifying us through it.

AS GOD HAS IT, DO WE?

AS GOD HAS IT, DO WE?

1Kings 11:4 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.
1Thessalonians [GW] 5:16-22 Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Whatever happens, give thanks, because it is God's will in Christ Jesus that you do this. Don't put out the Spirit's fire. Don't despise what God has revealed. Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. Keep away from every kind of evil.

Noshing on corn flakes and skimmed milk I read Joel Belz’s essay HIS MIGHTY ACTS (WORLD magazine, February 2, 2019) “A believers perpetual instinct should not so much be to ask, ‘I wonder what’s happening today,’ as it is to ask, in effect, ‘I wonder what memorable things God is doing today.’ In a profound way, the difference between those two expressions boils down to whether a person has a God-directed heart of praise.”
“It’s possible to cultivate such a heart. You can enhance your sense of praise, even in this secular age, by daring to give God public credit for what you believe deep in your heart He has actually done.”
Joel’s words left me considering as God has it, do I?

AS GOD HAS IT

AS GOD HAS IT
Wednesday, January 23, 2019

The following topical synopsis is provided from Gotquestions.org. A wonderful source for answering Bible questions succinctly. As always, God’s Word, the references, should be looked up, read in context and prayerfully pondered. Then in understanding, if need be, making a personal paradigm shift of life-view and application. In particular take note of the paragraph beginning with “So it is for any event of life;”An additional worthwhile exercise would be to in writing summarize the topic in your own words, then review it with others.

"What does the Bible say about luck?"

The American Heritage Dictionary defines “luck” as follows: 1. The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events. 2. Good fortune or prosperity; success....to gain success or something desirable by chance: “I lucked out in finding that rare book.”

The main question is, do things happen by chance? If they do, then one can speak of someone being lucky or unlucky. But if they do not happen by chance, then it is inappropriate to use those terms. Ecclesiastes 9:11-12 states, “I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Moreover, no man knows when his hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.” Much of what Ecclesiastes shares is from the perspective of a person who looks at life on earth without God, or life “under the sun.” From such a perspective—leaving God out of the picture—there seems to be good luck and bad luck.
A runner in a race may be the swiftest, but because someone in front of him stumbles, he trips over him and falls and does not win the race. How unlucky for him? Or a warrior king may have the strongest army but some “chance” arrow shot up into the air at random by a no-name enemy soldier just happens to pierce his armor in its most vulnerable location (2 Chronicles 18:33) resulting in that king’s death and the loss of the battle. How unlucky for King Ahab? Was it a matter of luck? Reading the whole of 2 Chronicles 18, we find that God had His hand in the matter from the beginning. The soldier who shot the arrow was totally unaware of its trajectory, but God in His sovereignty knew all along it would mean the death of wicked King Ahab.
A similar “chance” occurrence takes place in the book of Ruth. Ruth, a widow who was caring for her widowed mother-in-law, seeks a field to glean grain to provide for them. “So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she found herself working in a field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech” (Ruth 2:3). Elimelech had been the husband of her mother-in-law, Naomi, so Boaz was a relative of hers and was generous to Ruth. As Ruth returns home with a great deal more grain than Naomi expected, “her mother-in-law asked her, ‘Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!’ Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. ‘The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,’ she said. ‘The LORD bless him!’ Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. ‘He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.’ She added, ‘That man is our close relative; he is one of our kinsman-redeemers.’" (Ruth 2:19-20). So Naomi did not see it as a “chance” occurrence but as the providence of God, as do others later on (Ruth 4:14).
Proverbs 16:33 states a general principle: “The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord.” This refers to the use of casting lots (similar to the tossing of a coin or the rolling of dice) to settle certain judicial cases. The case involving Achan in Joshua 7 is an example in which the principle of Proverbs 16:33 is used to find the guilty party. Proverbs 18:18 states something similar: “Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart.” Again, the idea is that God’s providence plays the determining role in the results of the casting of lots so that judicial conflicts can be resolved no matter how great the contention. Proverbs 16:33 would indicate that something as random as the rolling of dice or the tossing of a coin is not outside of God’s sovereign control. And, therefore, its results are not merely of chance.
God’s sovereignty involves two aspects. God’s active will or sovereignty would involve something He causes to happen such as the leading of wicked King Ahab into battle (2 Chronicles 18:18-19). Ahab’s death was not merely the result of a randomly shot arrow, but as 2 Chronicles 18 reveals, God actively directed the events that led Ahab into battle and used that randomly shot arrow to accomplish His intended will for Ahab that day.
God’s passive will involves Him allowing, rather than causing, something to happen. Chapter1 of the book of Job illustrates this in what God allowed Satan to do in the life of Job. It is also involved in the evil that God allowed Joseph’s brothers to do to Joseph in order to accomplish a greater good, a good not apparent to Joseph until years later (Genesis 50:20).
Because we do not have the curtains drawn back to see what is taking place in heaven, we cannot always determine whether God’s active or passive will is involved in the events of our lives, but we do know that all things that take place are under the umbrella of His will, whether active or passive, and, therefore, nothing is a matter of mere chance. When a person rolls the dice to play a board game, God may sometimes cause the dice to land a certain way, but more often than not in such inconsequential matters, He may allow the dice to land as His laws of nature would determine without any active involvement. But even when He is not actively involved, how the dice land is still under His sovereignty.
So it is for any event of life; no matter how small (Matthew 10:29-31) or how large (Daniel 4:35; Proverbs 21:1), God is sovereign over all (Ephesians 1:11; Psalm 115:3; Isaiah 46:9-10), and thus nothing is merely the matter of chance.
From an earthly perspective, things may seem to happen at random, but throughout the whole of Scripture, it is clear that God is in control of all of His creation and is somehow able to take the random acts of natural law, the free will of both good and evil men, and the wicked intent of demons and combine them all to accomplish His good and perfect will (Genesis 50:20; Job chapters 1 and 42; John 9:1-7). And Christians, specifically, are given the promise that God works all things, whether seemingly good or bad, together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

CRYSTAL METH

I Am Crystal Meth
Hello.
You may or may not know me.
I destroy homes.
I tear families apart,
I’ll take your children and that is just the start.
I’m more precious than diamonds, more valued than gold.
The sorrows I bring are a sight to behold.
If you need me I’m easily found
I’m all around you in every city and every town.
I live with the rich I live with the poor.
I live down the street even next door.
I’m made in a lab just not the kind you think,
I can be made under the kitchen sink.
I can be made in the closet or in the woods.
If this doesn’t scare you to death it certainly should.
I have many names but one you’d know best
My name is Crystal meth.
My powers are awesome just try me and see.
Try me twice and your soul will belong to me.
Once I possess you, you’ll steal and you’ll lie
You’ll do what it takes just to get high.
The crimes you’ll commit for the high and fame
Will be worth millions once I get in your veins.
You’ll lie to your mom and steal from you dad,
When you see their tears you won’t even be sad.
You’ll forget your morals and how you were raised,
Once I teach you my worthless ways.
I’ll take your friends, your control, your pride,
But I’ll always be with you right by your side.
You’ll give up your friends, your family, your home,
When you run out you’ll be all alone.
I’ll take and I’ll take till there’s nothing to give,
And when I’m through you’ll be lucky to live.
You can try me for fun but I’m no game.
Giving the chance I’ll drive you insane.
I’ll give you nightmares while you lie sweating in bed.
I’ll be the evil voices inside you head.
You shouldn’t have tried me how many times were you told?
But you challenged my powers how could you have been so bold?
You couldn’t say no, and just walked away.
If you could do it all over again what would you say?
I’ll be you master you’ll be my slave.
Don’t fear being lonely I’ll walk with you to your grave.
I’ll show you more pain then your deepest betrayal
So come take my hand as I lead you to [a living] HELL.

I YODEL

I YODEL
Monday, January 21, 2019

James 1:22-27  But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

The day of my husband’s funeral, I wrote a poem, which ends: “… and gives us work to do.” The first weeks after his funeral were busy, hard weeks. I then went on a medical mission, but when I returned I found myself living in a new community with time on my hands.
I started making an effort to meet lonely little old ladies who needed someone. I called, visited and took them places. I planted a small garden behind my apartment and shared the fruits, vegetables and flowers with them. One day my ten year old grandson wanted to go somewhere and I told him I had to go see one of my little olds ladies. He said “Little old lady who?” I told him it sounded like he was yodeling. So now when people ask what I’ve been doing, I just say “I’ve been yodeling.”

PARADIGMS

PARADIGMS
Sunday, January 20, 2019

As we think, so we are. (Pr.23:7)

  Paradigm: a model, pattern, standard.
We all personally live according to a paradigm, the model that sets the ways of our life. A paradigm is made up of what we believe about self, life and death. Prior to my trusting Jesus as the Redeemer my paradigm was largely made up of birth family model, neighborhood and national Caucasian identity and culture, state school education, and a smattering of secularized Christmas and Easter religion.
The personal paradigm that influences our moment by moment, daily and long term living might be summed up in a single word or phrase: sex, food, pleasure, get wealth, be accepted, gain rank, my rights, strive for perfection, self-pity, avoid conflict, embrace conflict, control, be a fixer, et al.
After trusting Christ I realized an initial paradigm shift that is still continuing; my view of self, life and death changed and is continuing to change. The model I strive to live and mature by is in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit made real to me by ongoing edification by His message to us; His Holy Word (The Bible).
I encourage investigating your paradigm and thereby understanding why you act the way you do, and ask yourself if it is centered in thinking in manner pleasing to God. (Rom.12:1-3)
EBB4

PS. I knew a man that believed death is annihilation, oblivion, extinction. I liked and respected him though his paradigm affected every aspect of his life, sometimes with great kindness, sometimes not. Having lost track of him I know not whether he changed before dying.

CHOOSING VICTIMIZATION

CHOOSING VICTIMIZATION
Friday, January 18, 2019

Two questions posed to me: How is Satan successful? Why did Satan pick Eve to tempt instead of Adam?
I think answering the first question answers the second.
“Be humbled by God's power so that when the right time comes he will honor you. Turn all your anxiety over to God because he cares for you. Keep your mind clear, and be alert. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion as he looks for someone to devour.  Be firm in the faith and resist him, knowing that other believers throughout the world are going through the same kind of suffering.” (GW 1Pet.5:6-9)
Lions are considered great hunters. Lions look for those outside of the protection of their group; the inattentive laggers. Satan is no different, for he cannot victimize those well-protected in close fellowship in the John 1:12 family of God.
We may ask “But what of Job, wasn’t he a victim?”
Job was no victim for he chose not to be, instead trusting, and thereby was not devoured by Satan. Job continues as one of God’s choice examples for us.
Job said “God may kill me, but still I will trust him and offer my defense.” (CEV 13:15) And what would that defense be? The major clue is in 1:8. Read the chapter. Job’s continuing trust is his defense!
Trust in God is our only viable acceptable defense before God . . . and against Satan and wily company.

GOING BEYOND THE FIRST MILE

GOING BEYOND THE FIRST MILE
Thursday, January 17, 2019

Matthew [CEV] 5:41  If a soldier forces you to carry his pack one mile, carry it two miles.

Just when I thought I was getting better I relapsed. Consequently I’m again on medication for bronchitis. In the process of going to, being fitted in my doctor’s busy schedule, and the return trip home I encountered a number of second milers, individuals that went beyond what their employment required of them.
Explaining today’s verse: Roman occupation soldiers were not typically nice guys. They didn’t like Jews, Jews didn’t like them. Roman soldiers could legally require civilians to carry their pack or load for a mile. It didn’t matter what the civilian was doing at the moment, they had to comply or suffer. Jesus taught blessed continuance; a principle going beyond employment obligation.
Walgreen pharmacist and tech assistant, convenience store (gas station) employee all exemplified this code of kindness that Jesus taught. In thanking them I briefly explained how they fulfilled His teaching.
I was blessed and sparked, and pray you are too as you ponder Jesus words recorded in Matthew 5:41.

DISPENSATIONALISM

DISPENSATIONALISM
GotQuestions.org: "What is dispensationalism and is it biblical?"

A dispensation is a way of ordering things—an administration, a system, or a management. In theology, a dispensation is the divine administration of a period of time; each dispensation is a divinely appointed age. Dispensationalism is a theological system that recognizes these ages ordained by God to order the affairs of the world. Dispensationalism has two primary distinctives: 1) a consistently literal interpretation of Scripture, especially Bible prophecy, and 2) a view of the uniqueness of Israel as separate from the Church in God’s program. Classical dispensationalism identifies seven dispensations in God’s plan for humanity.
Dispensationalists hold to a literal interpretation of the Bible as the best hermeneutic. The literal interpretation gives each word the meaning it would commonly have in everyday usage. Allowances are made for symbols, figures of speech, and types, of course. It is understood that even symbols and figurative sayings have literal meanings behind them. So, for example, when the Bible speaks of “a thousand years” in Revelation 20, dispensationalists interpret it as a literal period of 1,000 years (the dispensation of the Kingdom), since there is no compelling reason to interpret it otherwise.
There are at least two reasons why literalism is the best way to view Scripture. First, philosophically, the purpose of language itself requires that we interpret words literally. Language was given by God for the purpose of being able to communicate. Words are vessels of meaning. The second reason is biblical. Every prophecy about Jesus Christ in the Old Testament was fulfilled literally. Jesus’ birth, ministry, death, and resurrection all occurred exactly as the Old Testament predicted. The prophecies were literal. There is no non-literal fulfillment of messianic prophecies in the New Testament. This argues strongly for the literal method. If a literal interpretation is not used in studying the Scriptures, there is no objective standard by which to understand the Bible. Each person would be able to interpret the Bible as he saw fit. Biblical interpretation would devolve into “what this passage says to me” instead of “the Bible says.” Sadly, this is already the case in much of what is called Bible study today.
Dispensational theology teaches that there are two distinct peoples of God: Israel and the Church. Dispensationalists believe that salvation has always been by grace through faith alone—in God in the Old Testament and specifically in God the Son in the New Testament. Dispensationalists hold that the Church has not replaced Israel in God’s program and that the Old Testament promises to Israel have not been transferred to the Church. Dispensationalism teaches that the promises God made to Israel in the Old Testament (for land, many descendants, and blessings) will be ultimately fulfilled in the 1000-year period spoken of in Revelation 20. Dispensationalists believe that, just as God is in this age focusing His attention on the Church, He will again in the future focus His attention on Israel (see Romans 9–11 and Daniel 9:24).
Dispensationalists understand the Bible to be organized into seven dispensations: Innocence (Genesis 1:1—3:7), Conscience (Genesis 3:8—8:22), Human Government (Genesis 9:1—11:32), Promise (Genesis 12:1Exodus 19:25), Law (Exodus 20:1Acts 2:4), Grace (Acts 2:4Revelation 20:3), and the Millennial Kingdom (Revelation 20:4–6). Again, these dispensations are not paths to salvation, but manners in which God relates to man. Each dispensation includes a recognizable pattern of how God worked with people living in the dispensation. That pattern is 1) a responsibility, 2) a failure, 3) a judgment, and 4) grace to move on.
Dispensationalism, as a system, results in a premillennial interpretation of Christ’s second coming and usually a pretribulational interpretation of the rapture. To summarize, dispensationalism is a theological system that emphasizes the literal interpretation of Bible prophecy, recognizes a distinction between Israel and the Church, and organizes the Bible into different dispensations or administrations.

MY TIMES ARE IN THY HANDS

MY TIMES ARE IN THY HANDS
Monday, January 14, 2019

Psalm 31:1-24  To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me. Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength. Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth. I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD. I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities; And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room. Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly. For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed. I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel. For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. But I trusted in thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my God. My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake. Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave. Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous. Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men! Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city. For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee. O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.

Until my husband passed away in 1990 we lived on a farm that had belonged to his family for generations. We lived in a large house that we planned and built with our own hands. If you had asked me then what my life would be like today: I would never have dreamed it would be as it is!
I am a widow living alone in a small apartment and there are times when I feel, as [King] David must have felt in verses 9-12, but most of the time my spirit soars! Read verses 14-24 again. Out loud, with feeling! In my Bible I have highlighted verse 14 and the first six words of verse 15 and added an exclamation point: “But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said thou art my God. My times are in thy hands!”

PPS. When the books of the Bible were originally written, they did not contain chapter or verse references. The Bible was divided into chapters and verses to help us find Scriptures more quickly and easily. … The chapter divisions commonly used today were developed by Stephen Langton, an Archbishop of Canterbury. Langton put the modern chapter divisions into place in around A.D. 1227. The Wycliffe English Bible of 1382 was the first Bible to use this chapter pattern. Since the Wycliffe Bible, nearly all Bible translations have followed Langton's chapter divisions. (Source: GotQuestions.org) EBB4

ABNORMAL NORMAL

ABNORMAL NORMAL
Sunday, January 13, 2019

Matthew 7:13—14 [Jesus said] "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
John 14:5-12 Thomas said to him [Jesus], "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

In the spirit of reminding myself this morning, I share with you:
·         As followers of Christ we are “peculiar” and should not strive to appear as what the travelers of the John 3:18 broad road deem normal. Tit.2:13-15; 1Pet.2:1-10
·         As temples for God’s Holy Spirit we are quite different than those remaining on the John 3:18 broad road. 1Cor.3:17; 6:19
·         If and when we strive to image behavior acceptable to those plodding the wide trail we are suppressing His Holy Spirit within us. 1Thes.5:19
·         Though we may exercise free-will to suppress the Holy Spirit, we cannot destroy Him within us. Doing so however is presently and eternally costly. 1Cor.3:9-23; 11:30
·         In thought and deed we are to worship Him. Rom.12:1-3
Now, what with events planned and unexpected this day, will I remain mindful of being His peculiar John 1:12 son and think and act accordingly? This being a challenge ever before me.

WHAT HAPPENED TO WESTERN CIVILIZATION?

WHAT HAPPENED TO WESTERN CIVILIZATION?
Friday, January 11, 2019

Genesis [GW] 2:16-17 The LORD God commanded the man. He said, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden. But you must never eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil because when you eat from it, you will certainly die."

You will never hear me denying that western civilization has changed for the worse. Even some of my young grandchildren bemoan the sad changes they’ve noticed in their lifetime. People whining, complaining, seeing themselves as a victim, intolerance, tolerance, undependability, family breakdown, drugs, profanity, wholesale murder, world record prison population, depression, neurosis, having unrealistic expectations, lack of personal peace et al. A general deterioration as the result of loss of Biblical thinking that had permeated our culture.
Ken Ham, Founder/CEO of Answers in Genesis (AIG), addressed the title question in the January/February issue of the AIG magazine. I share 4 observed reasons he presents:

a.       So much of the church (and its leadership) has compromised God’s Word in Genesis, thus undermining the authority of the Word of God and undermining a Christian worldview. [How we see life and death.]
b.      Most church leaders and academics have not taught generations how to truly develop a Christian worldview beginning with the foundation of Genesis and the rest of God’s Word.
c.       The teaching of apologetics to combat secular attacks of our day has been largely neglected in our churches.
d.      90-95% of kids from churches have been indoctrinated by the secular education system to doubt and not believe the Word of God beginning in Genesis – but to believe the pagan religion of evolution as a fact.

Ken goes on to point out that this all began 6,000 years ago in the garden in Eden, the battle between two religions.

GOD'S LIGHTER YOKE

DISHONESTY IN ANGER

Psalm 126 [NLT] When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream! We were filled with laughter, and we sang for joy. And the other nations said, “What amazing things the Lord has done for them.” Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us! What joy! Restore our fortunes, Lord, as streams renew the desert. Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy. They weep as they go to plant their seed, but they sing as they return with the harvest.
Matthew [MKJV] 11:25-30 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank You, O Father, Lord of Heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the sophisticated and cunning, and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. All things are delivered to Me by My Father. And no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son will reveal Him. Come to Me all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke on you and learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest to your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light.

An incongruous event occurred as result of my rewriting DT series on anger. A DT subscriber became angry at what I’ve written about anger and SHOUTED for me to remove her name from mailing list.
I immediately did so per her instruction. I was saddened. I rejoiced.
I rejoice because in past I would have, silly though it may seem to you, suffered feelings of rejection and accompanying passive-aggressive anger . . . but there was not so much as a shadow of the dark combine. How great is His life-changing Word! Truly His yoke is lighter! How wonderful is His rest! (Mt.11:29-30)
I’m saddened because having been there and knowing that such angry reaction indicates woundedness; demonstrating need for spiritual examination and remedy of giving burdensome emotional yoke in exchange for Jesus’ lighter one, anger for His peace.
And now there is something else you may already know: Yoked as His 2Corinthians 5:17 ambassador should never be misconstrued as a happy Christian hobby that all people will appreciate, applaud, and love us for.

WE ARE A SOUL

WE ARE A SOUL
Wednesday, January 9, 2019

I have a question for you about the dead in Christ will be raised first and to die in the Lord is to be present with the Lord (immediately).  It a friendly conversation I’m having with a close friend.reading FBC Growth Guide in 1 Thess. 4 & 5 this morning, I was reminded of our recent conversation about our status after death.  The apostle Paul twice wrote about being absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.  Since that seems to be quite clear, then what does it mean in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 where it is again written by Paul, “………And the dead in Christ will rise first.”???” VS

Jn.5:28-29; 1Cor.25:51-54; 2Cor.5:8; Rev.20:11-15

Again, as young man Fred Gilmour taught me, “Most if not all basic theology is established in the first chapters of Genesis.” On today’s question asked by VS, consider “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Gen.2:7)
C.S. Lewis commented that we don’t have a soul. We have a body. We are a soul. This is explained in 2Cor.5:8; when followers of Christ die they are absent from the body and present with the Lord.
I think of it as being natural that the Lord reverses the process. J

FLEE THE TREES?

FLEE THE TREES?
Tuesday, January 8, 2019

John 14:5-6 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
1Timothy 1:4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
Titus 3:7-9 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

A few days ago I wrote about commonality illustrating that wherever individuals roost in family trees (genealogy) that all end the same in accord with the truth of Hebrews 9:27, death. A reader advised staying away from genealogy because Jesus said so. Did He?
Let us first note that God’s Word, Old Testament and New, contain genealogies.
For some the problem then and now with genealogies is garnering one’s social or religious status from their family tree. A “My ancestors arrived on the Mayflower.” thing. Or like mistakenly centering religious identity in being a Pharisee or Sadducee or Baptist or Methodist or Presbyterian or …  Or in my case stratifying myself on my ancestor’s 50+ years faithfulness as a Bible teacher and preacher (but of course not mentioning the Scottish cattle rustlers or smugglers in Ireland).
Holiness nor eternal salvation neither gush nor trickle down from our family trees. Individuals trusting Jesus are justified by His grace. Then who I am is in Him:

WHO I AM IN CHRIST

·          I am God’s child. Jn.1:12-13 “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”
·         I am Jesus’ chosen friend. Jn.15:15 [Jesus explained] “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.”
·         I have been justified. Rom.5:1 “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
·         I am one spirit with the Lord. 1Cor.6:17 “… he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.”
·         I belong to God. 1Cor.6:19-20 “… do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
·         I am His family, a member of the Body of Christ. 1Cor.12:27 “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”
·         I am a holy saint. Phil.4:21 “Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you.” (Act.9:13; Rom.16:2; 1Cor.1:2; Eph.4:12; 5:3)
·         I am adopted as God’s child. Gal.4:4-5 “ … when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”
·         I, as a saint, have direct access to God. Eph.2:18-19 “For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,” (Heb.4:16)
·         I am redeemed and forgiven of all my sins. Col.1:12-14 “giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
·         I am complete in Christ. Col.2:8-10 “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”
·         I am forever free from condemnation. Rom.8:1-4 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Rom.4:18-25; Jam.2:23)
·         I am, as a lover of God, assured that all things work together for good. Rom.8:28 “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
·         I am without condemning charges. Rom.8:31-34 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.”
·         I cannot be separated from the love of God. Rom.8:35-39 “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written [Ps.44:22], "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
·         I am established, anointed and sealed by God. 2Cor.1:21-22 “And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”
·         I am confident His good work in me is assured. Phil.1:6 “… I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ”
·         I am a citizen of heaven sojourning on earth. Phil.3:20-21 “… our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.”
·         I am hidden with Christ in God. Col.3:1-4 “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died [Rom.6:2; Eph.2:1], and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
·         I have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. 2Tim.1:7 “… God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
·         I am able to find merciful grace when needed. Heb.4:15-16 “… we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
·         I am born eternally of God and Satan cannot rob me of my soul. 1Jn.5:18-19 “We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch [Gr. “attach oneself to”] him. We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”
·         I have utmost purpose in life. Mt.5:13-14 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.“ 2Cor.5:17-20 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us.”
·         I am a branch of the true vine, Jesus. Jn.15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
·         I am chosen and appointed by God to bear fruit. Jn.15:16-17 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.”
·         I am Christ’s personal Spirit-empowered witness. Act.1:8 “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
·         I am Christ’ ambassador of reconciliation. 2Cor.5:15-21 “[Jesus] died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
·         I am God’s coworker. 2Cor.6:1-2 “Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, "In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.’
·         I am truly now alive and seated with Christ in the heavenly realm. Eph.2:1-7 “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
·         I am God’s workmanship, created for good works. Eph.2:8-10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of [our] works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
·         I may approach Most Holy Sovereign God in freedom with confidence. Phil.3:11-12 “This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.”
·         I am loved by God. Rom.5:6-8 “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (1Jn.4:8)
·         I am a joint-heir with Christ. Rom.8:16-17 “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
·         I have been given wonderful promises. 2Pet.1:3-4 “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.”
·         I am never left alone. Heb.13:5b-6 “… [God] has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?" (Deut.3:16; Jos.1:5; 1Chr.28:20)
·         I have access to God’s wisdom. Jam.1:2-5 “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”
·         I am a serving priest. 1Pet.2:9-10 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
·         I am temporarily this side of physically being in heaven. 1Pet.2:11-12 “Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” (2Cor.5:6-8)
·         I am able to see what the unregenerate cannot. Jn.3:3  “Jesus answered him [Nicodemus], "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God."
