INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY

2Timothy [ESV] 2:15-16 Do your best to present yourself
to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly
handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead
people into more and more ungodliness,
“inductive”, as
in “inductive Bible study” means studying Scripture not simply academically or
thinking it will somehow fairylike impress and change us. It means study
looking for direction unto serious personal application, and with this attitude
God will provide! (2Tim.3:16-17)
Remember: Always
keep in mind that the Bible is not man’s words, but God’s Word. Go to group
studies, but be equipped to study on your own, not relying solely on the interpretations
of others. (Acts17:11) Prioritize, being consistent in study every day. Think
connecting Scripture to self and all relationships. Got questions? Always make
God’s Word your primary source for answers.
Inductive Bible
study requires 3 functions on our individual part.
Observation: What does the portion you’re studying say?
Interpretation: What does the portion mean? Watch out for
presuppositions and prior education. Look at every passage afresh, praying for
insight. (Just recently heard a preacher refer to “That apple” and thought “Now
how many novices are going to walk out of here with that in their knowledge
bank?)
Application: How does the meaning of this portion apply
to me?
Please be careful
not to leave any one of the 3 functions out for doing so is not inductive but
counterproductive. (1Thes.5:19-20)
