SOMETIMES THE WHALE, OTHER TIMES LIKE WALES

2Kings 14:25 & The Book of Jonah
Wales for many years
was a coal mining area, the mineral undergirding the local economy. The quality
of life rose and fell on the demand for coal. Generation after generation
entered the work of the pits and tunnels. It was hard dangerous pick and shovel
work.
In the early 20th
century when revival swept the area there was a concurrent slowdown in the
mining of coal. But it was not because of a workers strike, it was because so
many workers had been struck. The horses and ponies used to pull the coal
trolleys had to be retrained as they didn’t understand profanity-free commands!
My working in the
foundry during a later modern era was like that. Profanity being the norm, then
for me trusting Christ at age 27, suddenly not. More recently when I was
declared diabetic the same occurred with my immediately giving up ice cream and
candy to support health in my Lord’s service. None of these acts involved
struggle and will-power. Other times change was not at all like Wales but more
like Jonah’s Whale University experience, hence my chosen life verse of Psalm
32:8-9.
Is it not so for
you, sometimes Wales, other times whaling?
