PONDERING CONTEMPORARY APPLICATION

Romans [MKJV]
12:1-3 I beseech you therefore,
brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice,
holy, pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in
order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God. For
I say, through the grace given to me, to every one who is among you, not to
think of himself more highly than he ought to think. But set your mind to be
right-minded, even as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Hebrews 4:12 For the Word of God is living and powerful
and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of
soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the
thoughts and intents of the heart.
To think “That
was then, this is now.” modernist thought in contemplating Scripture is a
present day snare, a serious hindrance to pleasing God and adversely effecting
maturation. Wanting to provocatively highlight this mistake I puzzled as to how
from God’s Word could I illustration the problem. I came up with the following
having to do with being doubly armed as the Lord’s 2Cor.5:17-18 messenger of
reconciliation.
Is Hebrews 4:12 and
Luke 22:36 any less applicable today? Or does it come under “That was then,
this is now.” thinking.
