WE ARE SAVED BY JESUS'S DEATH ON THE CROSS

WE ARE SAVED BY JESUS’S DEATH ON THE CROSS

2Timothy [GW] 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker who isn't ashamed to teach the word of truth correctly.

Today’s title statement is and has been commonly declared, but is it comprehensively Biblically true? Examining the Truth (Jn.17:17), what do we find? Is salvation focused in the cross alone?
  Salvation is not.
Indeed the cross provides for forgiveness, but not for eternal life. Eternal life present and future is provided by Jesus’s life, not by His death.
Jesus called His John 1:12 family “children of the resurrection” (Lk.20:36) Importantly He stated that because He lives, we as trusting followers live also. (Jn.14:19)
Paul clearly explained “… the death of his Son restored our relationship with God while we were still his enemies, we are even more certain that, because of this restored relationship, the life of his Son will save us. … Certainly, if the dead don't come back to life, then Christ hasn't come back to life either.
If Christ hasn't come back to life, your faith is worthless and sin still has you in its power. Then those who have died as believers in Christ no longer exist. If Christ is our hope in this life only, we deserve more pity than any other people. (Rom.5:10;1Cor.15:16-19)
Peter explained that “Baptism, which is like that water [referring to Noah], now saves you. Baptism doesn't save by removing dirt from the body. Rather, baptism is a request to God for a clear conscience. It saves you through Jesus Christ, who came back from death to life.” (1Pet.3:21)
Jesus’s resurrection is far more than the display of God’s power. His resurrection facilitates and ensures our spiritual resurrection and our physical resurrection as long as He lives. (Col.3:3-4; Heb.7:25) Remarkably, born-again children of God are partakers of His divine nature! (Though we may not always feel so, it is a fact. (2Pet.1:4; 1Jn.5:4)
Also know that as Andrew Farley declares, “Eternal life is not our life made longer or our life made better. Eternal life is Christs life.”
A final reminder: Trusting Jesus we’re forgiven by His death, we are saved by His resurrection.
Rejoice, yes!! But also determine how the critical reality should change your life.

PREDICTIONS

PREDICTIONS

2Timothy 3:12-17 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

I’m not a prophet, but as an 84+ observer of life I’m making a prediction: If I live as long as the financial actualists predict I’ll see and hear the f word in advertisements. Do any of you disagree?
The Word of God tells us that culture would worsen. This contrary to what I was taught in public school; a culture in itself disproving the prediction “As we educate people (i.e. children) more, society will improve.” Man’s truth is eternally contrary to the Truth. (Jn. Chapter 17)

BE LIKE YOUR FATHER

BE LIKE YOUR FATHER

Matthew 5:43-48  Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Brother Harry was my pastor when I was a teenager and later he and his family came from out of state to perform my wedding ceremony. His 3 sons have all followed in their earthly father’s footsteps in serving our heavenly Father.
I recently heard the oldest son preach and I thought, “That’s as good or better than Harry could have done.” (I hope that if David ever reads this, he will know I mean it as a compliment.)
I pray that my life is such that others will see my heavenly Father through what I do.

FREE INDEED!

FREE INDEED!

2Timothy [TS2009] 2:15 Do your utmost to present yourself approved to Elohim, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly handling the Word of Truth.

As Biblically explained in the previous Daily Thoughts, God’s John 1:12 children are “free indeed”. (Jn.8:32, 36; Jam.1:25; 2:12, 16, 19) But what of communion and baptism, don’t they come under the heading of required rules, rites, and regulations?
  No. Not at all.
Communion and baptism are not to gain or maintain salvation and/or discipleship. They are the result of salvation and discipleship. Put another way: Father God’s John 1:12 children do not have to do anything to be, for we already are!
Baptism being public declaration with the order being baptizing disciples, not baptizing to be disciples. Baptism is the public declaration of faith and discipleship. (Mt.28:19-20) I like the way Gotquestions.org explains it as “Baptism by water is a “reenactment” of the baptism by the Spirit.”
Communion being memorialization. Communion is personally and corporately celebrating remembrance of Lord Jesus Christ. It is done by Father God’s John 1:12 family because of who we are in and with Jesus. (Lk.22:19) Remembrance: ἀνάμνησις; anamnēsis; an-am'-nay-sis; recollection: - remembrance (again).
If need be, please let contradictory religious tradition go and accept the freeing truth of God’s Word. If not needed, let us rejoice together in and because of the Word! (Jn.1:1; 2Tim.2:14-16; 3:16; 2Pet.1:20)

THE COMPLETE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CROSS

Romans [ESV] 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
2Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Have you ever heard or read that the whole message of Christ’ crucifixion is that Jesus died for our sins in order that we may be forgiven? If you have, think again for the statement is incomplete in that it does not encompass all that Jesus accomplished.
Jesus foretold that He would provide complete freedom from the law for those that trusted Him; freedom from the weight of rules, rites, and regulations. “free indeed”. Paul explained this. James called it the “perfect law of liberty”! (Jn.8:32, 36; Jam.1:25; 2:12, 16, 19) Said liberty being in, by, with Jesus, thanks to His complete efficacious work on the cross. This He verified when He said “It is finished”. (Jn.17:1-26; 19:30)
Jesus enables John 1:12 brothers and sisters as dead to sin, alive to God! Indeed sin did not die nor has not died . . . our old self is crucified with Jesus, we are dead to sin; forgiven and free from sin’s power in our lives!

Romans 6:1-22 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Slaves to Righteousness. What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.
Galatians 2:18-21 For if I rebuild what I tore down, I prove myself to be a transgressor. For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
Colossians 2:16-23 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations— “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used)—according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion [rules, rites, and regulations] and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.

For some reading this as they trust the Word (Jn.1:1; 2Tim.2:14-16; 3:16; 2Pet.1:20) they have been living in Jesus “free indeed”. For others it is revelation to be accepted and lived. For yet others this truth will be rejected as they continue to embrace traditions as did so many that Jesus walked and talked among those many years ago.

ZIGZAGGING

ZIGZAGGING TO A CONCLUSION

Psalm 103:1-5 [A Psalm of David.] Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
2Corinthians [GW] 10:4-5 The weapons we use in our fight are not made by humans. Rather, they are powerful weapons from God. With them we destroy people's defenses, that is, their arguments  and all their intellectual arrogance that oppose the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive so that it is obedient to Christ.
2Timothy [MKJV] 1:7 For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Hebrews [MKJV] 10:38; 11:6 …  "the Just shall live by faith. But if he draws back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him." … without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Staying on track in serious thinking can be hard work. Just getting past our own defenses; comfortable bias grounded in familial worldly education and personal preconceived concepts that we consider precepts can be tiresome.
When I first started rethinking life according to God’s Word it was mentally fatiguing. Then I discovered that the chosen process was a major contributor to my fatigue. It wasn’t the magnitude of enlightening new thought. It was that I was laboring at thinking in linear manner whereas I typically think in intermittent zigzag on and off patterns with items large and small crowding the edges.
The words above actually began with reading article on GIS:The discipline of not just seeing maps, but the connecting of geography to history. I began then thinking about others and arriving at the conclusion that once again I could assist in providing some of you with liberation. GIS being something I’ve always done and assumed most people did the same.
Due to exercise of rote learning in my public schooling I had an area of fear as I was not, am not good at memorization. This old fear was further cultivated after trusting Jesus at age 27. I was repeatedly hearing echoes of public school. “To grow spiritually you must memorize Scripture verbatim.” (KJV of course!) Accompanied by remarks such as “Anybody can memorize information if they really put their mind to it!” The plaguing fear, feelings of failure and rejection, and guilt was not delightful for a guy that still has to think about the alphabet.
God states in His Word that His children have soundness of mind. He did not, does not, say all our minds work in the same way. We don’t all think in the same manner!
And now arrives yet another ziggy-zaggy thought that I’ll conclude with this morning: We have no redeeming righteousness of our own. We only have redemption by faith. If we don’t live by faith but shrink back from applying what God says about us, He has no pleasure in us. Would this include clumsy anvil-footed Ed trying to be a basketball standout . . . or you or me trying to think like me or you? I think so, and that the reward in this case isn’t primarily knowledge with understanding resulting in mental and emotional liberation, but for His pleasure, honor and glory . . . and gain in edification.
Romans 12:3 says we’re not to think of ourselves more highly than we should. Instead, our thoughts should lead us to use good judgment based on what God has given each of us as believers. Contrariwise this means not thinking less of ourselves than we should. Doesn’t this include our thinking patterns? I have concluded that yes it does.

HAIRS THE PRIDE

HAIRS THE PRIDE

2Samuel GW 14:25-26 Now, no one in all Israel was praised for his good looks as much as Absalom was. He had no blemish from head to toe. At the end of every year, he used to cut his hair because it became heavy for him. When he cut the hair on his head and weighed it, it weighed five pounds according to the royal standard.
2Samuel 18:1-14 … The king ordered Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, "Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake." All the troops heard him give all the commanders this order regarding Absalom. So the troops went out to the country to fight Israel in the forest of Ephraim. There David's men defeated Israel's army, and the massacre was sizable that day-20,000 men. The fighting spread over the whole country. That day the woods devoured more people than the battle. Absalom happened to come face to face with some of David's men. He was riding on a mule, and the mule went under the tangled branches of a large tree. Absalom's head became caught in the tree. So he was left hanging in midair when the mule that was under him ran away. A man who saw this told Joab, "I saw Absalom hanging in a tree." "What! You saw that!" Joab said to the man who told him. "Why didn't you strike him to the ground? Then I would have felt obligated to give you four ounces of silver and a belt." But the man told Joab, "Even if I felt the weight of 25 pounds of silver in my hand, I wouldn't raise my hand against the king's son. We heard the order the king gave you, Abishai, and Ittai: 'Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.' …

Living in Nebraska has apparently altered my speech, vernacular that is; rarely now does anyone here ask me where I’m from? (On a few occasions a perceptive individual wouldn’t ask where, but smile and say, “You’re from Maryland, aren’t you?) Now don’t ya’ll get the idea that all Merlinders elide and slide, they don’t.
I could benefit you with a Merlin lexicon, but shant do so at this time, as this whole thing started with “hairs the pride” foremost in mind in my waking moment. (Undoubtedly having something to with all the Bible reading lately.)
Pursuing waking thought further: I well know that sinful arrogant ego-centric pride is major hindrance to maturation in love, and does lead to disaster. (Pr.11:2; 13:10; 16:18; Rom.1:31; 2Tim.3:3) And it can get you dead.
A sad illustrative tale was David’s son Absalom yearned to be king. He had much support in this and decided to overthrow his father. This led to war. During the big battle Absalom, mounted on a mule, fled David’s soldiers with his hair getting caught in the tangled branches of a tree, leaving him vulnerable as he hung from his long tresses. He was killed.
I know pride led to Absalom’s humiliating downfall. But knowing warriors carry sharp swords and knives in their kit; Aware of his father’s order to Joab and the army, to “protect the young man Absalom for his sake”, did he not lower himself to hacking his hair and freeing himself? In the end was it this seemingly small element of his pride in his beautiful hair that did him in? Considering the history of man, it wouldn’t be first or last instance of ostensibly diminutive detail involving conceit contributing to failure. I just completed reading a non-fiction book on WII North African campaign, the account telling of many hair instances costing life and injury of a large number of Allied soldiers.
The personal part: My hair is short could say I, but is my waking thought cautionary so that I or you don’t get hung up today? I’m no more sure of this than I am of why Absalom didn’t cut himself free, but, just in case …
