RUNNING BACKGROUND CHECKS

2Timothy 4:1-4 Therefore I solemnly witness before
God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who is going to judge the living and the dead
according to His appearance and His kingdom, preach the Word, be instant
in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering
and doctrine. For a time will be when they will not endure sound doctrine,
but they will heap up teachers to themselves according to their own lusts,
tickling the ear. And they will turn away their ears from the truth and
will be turned to myths.
I believe verification before endorsement in
any form is something that John 1:12 authorized children of God should practice
commonly. Having God’s Word as canon (i.e. gauge) we should run background
checks to validate those that profess Christianity and say they speak
for God. Validation is a responsibility that should not be neglected. It being
a practice that cannot be held to apart from the exercise of 2Timothy 2:15.
Yesterday I read
a nice encouraging quote, but I didn’t know anything about the religious
teacher and author, so I researched Richard Rohr to see who and what.
The first thing I
discovered is Rohr believes that Christianity isn’t the only path to heaven. A fact
that of itself discounts him as someone trusting in the Word living (Jn.1:1)
and written (2Tim.3:16; 2Pet.1:20); for the Word declares there is but one way
to heaven.
Then I discovered
he runs the Center for Action and Contemplation, on a dusty road outside of
Albuquerque. A place including a mix of religion, including Eastern mysticism
and New Age, with “Hindu and yogic methods of integrating the body into prayer”.
Rohr thinks and
has written that orienting theology around Jesus’ death and resurrection is
misplaced, arguing that the spirit of Christ is not the same thing as the
person of Jesus Christ.
I discovered more,
but I’ll not share it here as Rohr fails testing by the Word of God.
Consequently I’ll not even publish his nice encouraging saying on this page.
