TO SEE THE TRUTH

TO SEE THE TRUTH

Thursday, September 11, 2014

John 8:31-32 Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed on Him, If you continue in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Romans 12:1-3 I beseech you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God. For I say, through the grace given to me, to every one who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think. But set your mind to be right-minded, even as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.

2Timothy 2:15-16; 3:16-17 Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. But shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. … All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work.

I’m presented with candid questions that require effort in thinking before I can attempt to put in DT words, sentences, questions, and paragraphs that I hope makes sense. Everything I am privileged to write does not always do so. At times I muddle. Thankfully there are those that respond “What are you trying to say?” Their questions spur me to further thinking and work to clarify.

There are days when rather than think, study, think, study, think, study . . . I’d prefer to clean house, pull weeds, unclog toilets et al. But do not as there’s the matter of responsible discipleship.

I read every day. My home is cluttered with various newspaper, magazines, book, printouts, and of course there’s this screen before me. I even keep something to read in my vehicle.

As part of discipleship applied in reading I keep in mind “the truth will set you free”. I know Jesus is speaking of The Truth, His Word, but I do believe the principle is applicable in all areas of life, including thinking in examination of what is written in newspapers, magazines, books, etc.

At times scrutiny of written matter brings me to laughter. Occasionally so aloud as Tuesday when I read “he was shot multiple times in the operating room” that should have read “He was brought to the operating room after being shot multiple times.” Or is operating room (or “parking lot” as “shot in the”) a body part I don’t know about? The receptionist behind the counter asked “What’s so funny?” My answer produced a you are strange look. Can you imagine?!!

However, most of my thinking beyond reading is more serious.

A simple example that doesn’t require much labor in thinking: The newspaper article reported that a candidate for Nebraska governor is against taxpayers receiving their own money back in the form of vouchers because vouchers send kids to private schools.

An example that requires more effort in thinking was recent British psychiatry research report stating youth that smoke marijuana daily are 60% less likely to graduate from high school or college. And youthful users are 7 times more likely to attempt suicide. Wait, isn’t personal belief system the problem, with smoking dope one of set of choices made out of thereby attitude? (As a disciple of Christ I don’t see escapism via drugs or suicide on list of permissible options. Ps.50:15; 1Cor.10:13; Eph.5:15-21; Col.3:15-17)

And beginning this week I’m thinking about question to be answered “People say God speaks to them. Why doesn’t God speak to me?” Once again, at this labor before me I hear the vacuum cleaner and lawn mower loudly calling my prone to laziness mind.

Indeed the truth will set us free, but it also introduces us to work required for approval by He that frees.  EBB4

LOSING FAITH

LOSING FAITH

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain [the integrity of] mine own ways

       before him.

Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the

least is unjust also in much.

Hebrews 11 … Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah; also David, and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the strangers. Women received their dead raised to life again, and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings; yes, more, of bonds and imprisonments. They were stoned, they were sawed in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented. …

Through my decades I’ve heard a number of people say they lost faith in God.

My thoughts repeatedly come back to this losing faith issue . . . for I still hear it expressed.

When I inquire “And your reason is?” I hear a litany of reasons that I consider surface rationale. Having given the issue much thought off and on for over 50 years, I arrived at conclusion of two serious underlying reasons.

  1. God is not as they think He is or should be.
  2. Their life events are not how they expect them to be with God.
      What do you think?  EBB4

28 REASONS WHY I LOVE GOD

28 Reasons Why I Love God (Author unknown)

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

1) I love God because...His mercies are new EVERY morning.

2) I love God because....He thinks precious thoughts about ME, they outnumber the grains of sand! (Psalms 139:17-18)

3) I Love God Because...even though I don't always get what I want I always get what I need. Thanks to everyone who has been in my life. You are just what I needed:)

4) I Love God Because...no matter how many times I fall He is ALWAYS there to pick me up, dust me off, and encourage me to move on (Psalm 40:1).

5) I Love God Because...He ALWAYS answers prayers (yes, no, or wait). Sometimes it's not how I would like them answered but He knows what is best.

6) I Love God Because...He is never changing. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

7) I Love God Because...He is the LOVER of my soul, He is my SHELTER in the raging storm, He is the HOPE that I cling to, and He is the ROCK on which I stand.

8) I Love God Because...He is my reason for living.

9) I Love God Because… He takes me back every time. When I ask “who will love me for me?” He patently waits for me to figure out that He HAS and ALWAYS will love me for me... Thank you God for being so patient with me and taking me back EVERYTIME.

10) I love God Because…God is so good to me. When I was in chains Mercy came running and Grace set me FREE.

11) I Love God Because...He has a plan and a purpose for my life (Jeremiah 29:11).

12) I Love God Because…He is patient with me by revealing Himself (over and over again) to my doubting heart.

13) I Love God Because… He left the 99 to find the one. I was the one. (Luke 15:3 -9, Romans 5:8).

14) I Love God Because… He is the perfect example of what love REALLY is. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

15) I Love God Because… He gives me peace in the midst of the raging storms of life.

16) I Love God Because…although I will never be beautiful according to the worlds standards; I am reminded that I am beautiful in His eyes.

17) I Love God Because… I can go to Him with all my worries, fears, hopes, and dreams. He doesn’t tell me that they are irrational; He just takes them and in return gives me peace.

18) I Love God Because… He uses the “little things” in life to remind me that He has control of my life.

19) I Love God Because… He meets me where I am and takes me where I need to be.

20) I Love God Because …He is all I ever needed.

21) I Love God Because… He first loved me.

22) I Love God Because… He provides a way when there seems to be no way.

23) I Love God Because… He has a deep deep love for me. He takes my messed up life and makes it into something beautiful. I am not who I was!- Praise the Lord!

24) I Love God Because… He sees the depth of my heart and He loves me the same.

25) I Love God Because...Even though other people let me down He never has and NEVER will- He walked in when everyone else walked out.

26) I Love God Because… He reveals Himself over and over again and reminds me that He has control of my life.

27) I Love God Because… He would rather die than to ever live without me.

28) I Love God Because… He is my hope and the solid rock on which I stand. I find refuge in Him alone. Psalms 62:5-8 “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

MORALITY WITHOUT GOD

MORALITY WITHOUT GOD

My parents lived moral honorable lives. My Dad and Mom, live-in grandmother and uncle, very much exemplified and taught us Commandments 2 thru 10. However, they did so without mentioning God; not believing God as Author, they didn’t attribute or emphasize whom from with His why for obedience.

In my lifetime I’ve observed this model grow in our USA culture as it previously had in Europe. And I along with many other elder disciples of Christ am saddened by it.  EBB4

From GotQuestions.org : "What are the Ten Commandments? What is the Decalogue?"

The Ten Commandments (also known as the Decalogue) are ten laws in the Bible that God gave to the nation of Israel shortly after the exodus from Egypt. The Ten Commandments are essentially a summary of the 613 commandments contained in the Old Testament Law. The first four commandments deal with our relationship with God. The last six commandments deal with our relationships with one another. The Ten Commandments are recorded in the Bible in Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21 and are as follows:
  1) “
You shall have no other gods before me.” This command is against worshipping any god other than the one true God. All other gods are false gods.
  2) “
You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” This command is against making an idol, a visible representation of God. There is no image we can create that can accurately portray God. To make an idol to represent God is to worship a false god.
  3) “
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His name.” This is a command against taking the name of the Lord in vain. We are not to treat God’s name lightly. We are to show reverence to God by only mentioning Him in respectful and honoring ways.
  4) “
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” This is a command to set aside the Sabbath (Saturday, the last day of the week) as a day of rest dedicated to the Lord.
  5) “
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” This is a command to always treat one’s parents with honor and respect.
  6) “
You shall not murder.” This is a command against the premeditated murder of another human being.
  7) “
You shall not commit adultery.” This is a command against have sexual relations with anyone other than one’s spouse.
  8) “
You shall not steal.” This is a command against taking anything that is not one’s own, without the permission of the person to whom it belongs.
  9) “
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” This is a command prohibiting testifying against another person falsely. It is essentially a command against lying.
  10) “
You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” This is a command against desiring anything that is not one’s own. Coveting can lead to breaking one of the commandments listed above: murder, adultery, and theft. If it is wrong to do something, it is wrong to desire to do that same something.
Many people mistakenly look at the Ten Commandments as a set of rules that, if followed, will guarantee entrance into heaven after death. In contrast, the purpose of the Ten Commandments is to force people to realize that they cannot perfectly obey the Law (
Romans 7:7-11), and are therefore in need of God’s mercy and grace. Despite the claims of the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:16, no one can perfectly obey the Ten Commandments (Ecclesiastes 7:20). The Ten Commandments demonstrate that we have all sinned (Romans 3:23) and are therefore in need of God’s mercy and grace, available only through faith in Jesus Christ.

BELONGING VERSUS BELONGING

BELONGING VERSUS BELONGING

Sunday, September 07, 2014

John [GW] 1:11-13 He went to his own people, and his own people didn't accept him. However, he gave the right to become God's children to everyone who believed in him. These people didn't become God's children in a physical way-from a human impulse or from a husband's desire to have a child. They were born from God. [Note John chapter 3:1-21]

1Peter [GW] 2:2-10 Desire God's pure word as newborn babies desire milk. Then you will grow in your salvation. Certainly you have tasted that the Lord is good! You are coming to Christ, the living stone who was rejected by humans but was chosen as precious by God. You come to him as living stones, a spiritual house that is being built into a holy priesthood. So offer spiritual sacrifices that God accepts through Jesus Christ. That is why Scripture says, "I am laying a chosen and precious cornerstone in Zion, and the person who believes in him will never be ashamed." This honor belongs to those who believe. But to those who don't believe: "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, a stone that people trip over, a large rock that people find offensive." The people tripped over the word because they refused to believe it. Therefore, this is how they ended up. However, you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, people who belong to God. You were chosen to tell about the excellent qualities of God, who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not God's people, but now you are. Once you were not shown mercy, but now you have been shown mercy.

This morning the refrain from dear old hymn repeatedly playing in the studio of my mind, and judging from emotional reaction, in my heart.

“Now I belong to Jesus, Jesus belongs to me – Not for the years of time alone, But for eternity.” (Now I Belong To Jesus, by Norman J. Clayton. Hebrews 1:13 "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise." Complete hymn: http://www.my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis2/belong.html )

No miracle in the words and music replays; it is how The Word works when consideration is given. In this case the thread from pondering that Jesus died not just to redeem unto eternal life, heaven, those that trust Him. He also sacrificed to redeem us from self; that we no longer need to live for ourselves struggling to maintain a fragile semblance of sanity, success, or survival. (2Cor.5:15)

How wonderful is God’s Holy Spirit within as He renews our thinking, setting us free in Christ! (Jn.14:16-17; Rom.12:1-3;1Cor.6:19;1Thes.5:19;Heb.1:13)

A basic human need is to belong. In Eden, this fully was had until Eve, then Adam, granting audition to the wily old serpent. Once the seal of belonging was broken by man’s distrust of his Creator, the emotional need to belong became a dominant factor resulting in our sinful striving to fill the vacuum with prideful things that cannot satisfy. The list is long and various, including clubs, associations, fraternities, clans, tribes, corporations, charitable organizations, ministries, religions, churches, marriage, having children; all of which can never fully sate our hunger to actually belong.

Take a moment and contemplate a few questions: How much effort do I invest in trying to gain and maintain the impression of belonging? How effective are my efforts? Do I feel that I’m continually against the wall in such endeavor? Has the investment ever become frustrating to the point that I withdrew in disappointment, even despairing, going hermit, or possibly to the point of considering suicide?

There is but one true belonging, it being in living within Christ redemptive work.

Individuals without will never truly enjoy belonging and its release (Jn.8:32-36), for they are not His (Mt.7:21-23; Jn.3:18; 8:23-47) though they certainly can be (John 3:1-36; 5:24; 10:28)

And then there are those trusting Him for eternal salvation but living in conflict with who they are as redeemed people (Jn.1:12; 2Cor.5:17; 1Pet.1:18); belonging to God, yet struggling by worldly methods to fill their need to belong; thereby thwarting the fruit of the Spirit.

Come, let us sing the joyous song: “Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb; Redeemed through His infinite mercy, His child and forever I am. … Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus, No language my rapture can tell; I know that the light of His presence. With me doth continually dwell.” (Redeemed, by Fanny J. Crosby & William J. Kirkpatrick. http://www.my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis2/redeemed.html )

CRITICALLY THINKING

CRITICALLY THINKING

Friday, September 05, 2014

John [MKJV] 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word [Logos], and the Word [Logos] was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and without Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

1Thessalonians [MKJV] 5:14-24 Now we exhort you, brothers, warn those who are unruly, comfort the faint-hearted, support the weak, be patient toward all. See that none gives evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue the good, both towards one another and towards all. Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophesying. Prove all things, hold fast to the good. Abstain from every appearance of evil. And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blamelessly at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who called you, who also will do it.

2Timothy [MKJV] 2:15-16 Study earnestly to present yourself approved to God, a workman that does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. But shun profane, vain babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.

I fell asleep and awoke critically thinking about the topic of critical thinking. Not just a school curriculum subject, but a core affair of living health in all areas that matter; spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical.

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, explains “Critical thinking is the study of clear and unclear thinking. The National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking defines critical thinking as the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skilfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.

After rouse and REM and rouse period of evaluating, I agree with Wikipedia summary definition. However, I personally know the application thereof is quite different for Christian than those that are not a disciple of Christ.

With Christian the vigor is quite different as Logos (Jn.1:1-3), Word as person and written being the one basic authentic fact. Logos, the Word, being Alpha and Omega. (Rev.1:8; 22:13)

  C. I. Scofield notes John 1:1 - Word (Greek, "logos"); (Aramaic, "Memra," used in the Targums, or Hebrew, paraphrases, for "God"). The Greek term means (1) a thought or concept;

(2) the expression or utterance of that thought. As a designation of Christ, therefore, Logos is peculiarly felicitous because, (1) in Him are embodied all the treasures of the divine wisdom, the collective "thought" of God (1Co_1:24); (Eph_3:11); (Col_2:2); (Col_2:3) and, (2) He is from eternity, but especially in His incarnation, the utterance or expression of the Person, and "thought" of Deity (Joh_1:3-5); (Joh_1:9); (Joh_1:14-18); (Joh_14:9-11); (Col_2:9). In the Being, Person, and work of Christ, Deity is told out.

For Christian, critical thinking on any and every issue is reliant upon, subjective to, Logos, the thought of the Omniscient One (all-knowing). Exercising critical thinking and arriving at conclusions by this methodology pleases God, but seldom if ever pleases the unbelieving or reliant other-wise teacher or professor. God will stamp “Approved”, whereas non-believers typically will fail you. (2Tim.2:15-16)   EBB4

PROPER CITATION/ATTRIBUTION CONTRIBUTES TO PRESERVATION

PROPER CITATION/ATTRIBUTION CONTRIBUTES TO PRESERVATION

2Corinthians 5:14-21 For the love of Christ constrains [held together EBB4] us, judging this, that if one died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that the living ones may live no more to themselves, but to Him who died for them and having been raised. So as we now know no one according to flesh, but even if we have known Christ according to flesh, yet now we no longer know Him so. So that if any one is in Christ, that one is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation; whereas God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and putting the word of reconciliation in us. Then we are ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as God exhorting through us, we beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For He has made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

A number of Christian publications allow copying, excerpts, and quotes used from, if you cite writer and publication. The Berean Call, Answers In Genesis, GotQuestions.org are this way and there are others.

Why do they want and expect attribution?

It’s not just about copyright laws. As we attribute it accomplishes several important things:

  • We give credit where credit is due.
  • It shows that we trust them as a reliable source of solid information.
  • It shows that we are confident they’re a dependable supplier of stimulating thought.
  • It shows that we look to them as helpers as we reap guidance from their relationships, education, experience, expertise, and their resultant wisdom gained.
The diminishing of attribution has and continues to do great damage to our nation. I speak not simply of expense for and deterioration from copyright lawsuits or loss of position such as has Senator John Walsh. I speak of Christian progressive drift away from attributing The Word (Jn.1:1) as redemptive, all-wise, morality standard, life-guiding providing joy, peace, health et al.
Without Logos attribution, can we wholly live godly lives as His 2Corinthians 5:1-21 agents of reconciliation? Without proper citation are we truly constrained by His love? Without saith the Lord credited whom does the hearer hear? (854 times in 815 KJV verses; “God said” in 43 verses.) Who does the hearer look to as supplier?  (“He/she really knows their Bible!” or “They tell me what God has said.”)
As His agents we are to “preach the Word, be instant in season and out of season, reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine.” and to honor The Author while doing so. (2Tim.4:2) This is what God said.  EBB4
