DECISION MAKING AND THE WILL OF GOD: Set Adrift
Romans [GW] 12:1-2 Brothers and sisters, in view of all we have just shared about God's compassion, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. Don't become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants-what is good, pleasing, and perfect.
Reject God’s will
via egocentric will and He may set us adrift in the phrenzy of life. King Saul
and those people described in Romans chapter 1 being prime examples.
King Saul’s goal
being winning, success and preservation, but with absolutely no interest in
pleasing God. God set him adrift. (1Sam. Chapters 28 & 31)
Romans 1:16-28 describes
those authentically worshipping God in contrast to those intent on pleasing
self far from interest in pleasing God.
Reject God, and
He may set us adrift in the phrenzy of life; this regardless of how often we
and politicians intone “God bless America!” – the phrase passionately invoked
sans pleasing Him with authentic Romans 12:1-3 submissive worship. A patriotic
practice being the bane of evangelical nationalism akin to medieval crusader
philosophy.
Rather than
repeatedly invoking the familiar USA mantra, is it not far better to cry out
with repentant King David, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within
me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his
benefits,” (Ps.103; also note Ps.51)
