SANCTIFICATION

SANCTIFICATION
Tuesday, July 18, 2017

Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, cultivate your own salvation [soteria] with fear and trembling.

Sanctification is an absolutely integral to God’s gift of salvation, it being in 3 parts.
·         His: When we trust Him, because of His redeeming act of propitiation, we are sanctified.
·         Our responsibility: Once redeemed, an active place of discipleship of body, soul, and spirit. (1Cor.1:30; 1Thes.4:3-4; 2Thes.2:13; 1Pet.1:2)
·         Jointly; Complete conclusion.
  To further understand sanctification:

Strong defines: G38 ἁγιασμός; hagiasmos; hag-ee-as-mos'; From G37; properly purification, that is, (the state) purity; concretely (by Hebraism) a purifier: - holiness, sanctification.; G37; ἁγιά; ω; hagiazō; hag-ee-ad'-zo; From G40; to make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate; (mentally) to venerate: - hallow, be holy, sanctify.; G40 ἅγιος; hagios; hag'-ee-os; From ἅγος hagos (an awful thing) compare G53, [H2282]; sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated): - (most) holy (one, thing), saint.; G53 ἁγνός; hagnos; hag-nos'; From the same as G40; properly clean, that is, (figuratively) innocent, modest, perfect: - chaste, clean, pure.

(In the above paragraph I am again teaching you something new in the way of Bible study; how you can move sequentially thru Strong’s Greek  designated by G] or Hebrew designated by H definitions.)

Scofield explainedIn the Old Testament the words consecration, dedication, sanctification, and holiness are various renderings of one Hebrew word, are used of persons and of things, and have an identical meaning, that is, set apart for God. Only when used of God himself (for example (Lev_11:45), or of the holy angels (for example (Dan_4:13) is any inward; (Lev_11:45); (Dan_4:13) moral quality necessarily implied. Doubtless a priest or other person set apart to the service of God, whose whole will and desire went with his setting apart, experienced progressively an inner detachment from evil; but that aspect is distinctively of the New Testament, not of the Old Testament (Mat_4:5).
  “Old Testament Righteousness. (Luk_2:25). New Testament Righteousness. (See Scofield) - (Rom_3:21), (Rom_10:10) Righteous living (1Jo_3:7) Self-righteousness (Rom_10:3).
holy Sanctification, holiness, Summary:
(1) In both Testaments, the same Hebrew and Greek words are rendered by the English works "sanctify" and "holy," in their various grammatical forms. The one uniform meaning is, "to set apart for God."
(2) In both Testaments, the words are used of "things" and "persons".
(3) When used of things, no moral quality is implied; they are sanctified or made holy because set apart for God.
(4) Sanctification, when used of persons, has a threefold meaning.
    (a) In position, believers are eternally set apart for God by redemption, "through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once" (Heb_10:9); (Heb_10:10). Positionally, therefore, believers are "saints" and "holy" from the moment of believing; (Phi_1:1); (Heb_3:1).
    (b) In experience, the believer is being sanctified by the work of the Holy Spirit through the Scriptures (Joh_17:17); (2Co_3:18); (Eph_5:25); (Eph_5:26); (1Th_5:23); (1Th_5:24).
    (c) In consummation, the believer's complete sanctification awaits the appearing of the Lord (Eph_5:27); (1Jo_3:2).

Scofield further explains elsewhere in a footnote that “Sanctification is through the [Holy] Spirit, not the law (Galatians 5:16-24).”
OK, so what does this mean to me today, tomorrow, yesterday, or . . . this past Wednesday?
After ordering roofing supplies at Menards we went to a cashier to pay the cost. When the cashier handed me the sales slip she noted the #1028 discount attachment and pointed me to the rack where the coupons were. At 3 dollars a bundle of shingles it meant redemption of almost $370. As I walked toward the rack daughter Renee’ peevishly declared “Dad, if you do that you’re despicable!”
Confused, I replied that the cashier told me it was OK.
After Renee’ clarified that Perry at the help desk had already subtracted the 3 dollar rebate, I had the choice between sanctification and the love of money. (1Tim.6:10)
Just how much does $370 buy in the way of distress . . . or subtract from functional sanctification?
And then there’s another question: Does God’s Holy Spirit speak through sanctified daughters?
  What do you think?
